Natal say: "While ply is a very effective material for making snare drum shells, it does not have the freer, more musical, resonance of stave. Also, stave-constructed shells use less glue, allowing the resonant waves to vibrate more intensely."
Natal's UK-built stave snare drums make a very interesting alternative to the norm; whereas a traditional snare drum is made from plies of wooden veneer which are glued together and moulded into a circular shape, a stave drum is constructed similarly to the way a barrel is made - solid blocks of wood with bevelled edges are arranged in a circle and then glued together to create a very thick shell. This gives the drum a higher fundamental pitch with lots more body than a ply-constructed drum.
Walnut is dark, low and warm in tone as a result the tighter grain on the wood. Performing equally as well at high, medium and low tunings, Walnut shells have a very balanced tonal spectrum which makes them highly versatile, whilst the dark and pleasingly figured woodgrain ensures that they are also visually satisfying. The Natal Pure Stave also features Natal's Original series lugs, Tru-Tune tension rods and Tri-Throw snare strainer, meaning the hardware on this great looking and great sounding drum will never let you down. These drums show remarkable craftsmanship, with a waxed finish which can be buffed, oiled and maintained by the user throughout the life of the drum, allowing the owner to add a personal touch.
