Due to their fervent popularity, there are keyboard models available for pretty much every function, but which is the right one for you? At Fair Deal Music we have compiled some of the most popular keyboard types suitable for a range skill levels.
Everyone has to start somewhere, and the beginner keyboard provides both the where and the how. Beginner keyboards tend to be considerably lighter and more affordable than their more advanced counterparts due to their more limiting features, this is the closest you’re going to get to playing a piano whilst still having the benefits of a keyboard. Unlike many more complex instruments that usually have around 7, the beginner keyboard is limited to 2 – 4 octaves and has a smaller pool of digitalised instrument sounds. While this may hinder more skilled players, it is the perfect starting point and very helpful in picking up the basics.
Spontaneous composing is at the heart of the arranger keyboard, a technological marvel, the arranger provides access to a multitude of complex features that can help recreate the effect of a full band. It does so by providing access to a wide library of pre-recorded accompaniment tracks through a range of genres that can be mixed and matched to complement the keywork. Frequented by soloists, many arranger keyboards also offer voice back-up, chord recognition software, and even internal storage for recording tracks.
For the creative and the creator, a synthesizer is the keyboard of choice. Distorting pre-existing samples and creating new, unique sounds is very much the synthesiser’s raison d'être. Analogue and digital signal processing is used to create sounds that regular keyboards can’t, making it the instrument of choice for many indie or alternative bands looking to create their own unique sound.
Serving as the polar opposite to the beginner keyboard, the digital workstation is exactly what it says on the tin; a keyboard boasting an abundance of features through which every single note can be recorded and meticulously altered. The assortment of complex features which make up the digital workstation make it ideal for experienced users and musical perfectionists. Digital workstations usually come with their own integrated synthesizers which allow for further creation and alteration.
The general idea of what an organ looks like is slightly outdated, modern organs frequently come in the form of large keyboards that replicate the original sound without using any massive metal pipes. Many churches and historical sites that have long made use of organs are now looking to replace them with the newer keyboard models that are infinitely more practical. Organs are very much a niche musical instrument, chances are if you need one, you’ll know.
Whether you’re a keyboard veteran or a complete beginner, a functional playing space provides you with an environment within which you have access to all of your keyboard equipment and resources. Getting all of the equipment together can be a hassle, what size stand do I need? Will these headphones work with the keyboard? What type of chair should I use? The questions may feel endless. Take the guesswork out of buying keyboard equipment with the help of Fair Deal Music, we offer an assortment of keyboard bundles through which you receive all of the necessary equipment to get you playing as quickly as possible.
