Roland JC-40 Jazz Chorus Stereo Guitar Amplifier
Description
Quick Product Summary
The Roland JC-40 Jazz Chorus brings the legendary JC clean sound and immersive stereo chorus of the classic Jazz Chorus series into a compact, gig-ready 40-watt stereo guitar amplifier. Two independent power amps and two custom 10-inch speakers deliver clear, spacious sound with the headroom and definition that have made Jazz Chorus amplifiers a favourite among guitarists for decades.
Alongside its unmistakable Dimensional Space Chorus, the JC-40 includes stereo vibrato, reverb and built-in distortion. Front-panel stereo inputs and a stereo effects loop also make it an excellent platform for pedalboards, stereo effects, multi-effects processors, guitar synthesisers and modelling equipment.
What Makes the Roland JC-40 Special?
The JC-40 is built around Roland's celebrated JC Clean sound: clear, detailed and highly responsive, with very little unwanted colouration. This makes it particularly effective as a pedal platform, allowing overdrives, delays, reverbs, modulation pedals and modelling systems to retain their individual character. Its two-speaker stereo design also gives stereo effects a sense of width that conventional mono combos cannot reproduce.
Roland's famous Dimensional Space Chorus uses the amp's independent power sections and speakers to combine direct and modulated sounds acoustically in the room, creating a broad three-dimensional chorus effect. Selectable fixed and manual chorus modes provide additional flexibility, while the onboard vibrato, reverb and distortion extend the amplifier's tonal range without requiring extra pedals.
Who Is It For?
The Roland JC-40 is ideal for guitarists who value exceptional clean tones, stereo effects and a highly responsive pedal platform. It suits styles ranging from jazz, funk and pop to indie, ambient, alternative and experimental music.
It is particularly well suited to players using stereo pedalboards, amp modellers, multi-effects processors and guitar synthesisers, as well as musicians who want the established Jazz Chorus character without the larger size and weight of a JC-120.

FAQs
How powerful is the Roland JC-40?
The JC-40 delivers 40 watts of stereo output through two custom-designed 10-inch speakers, providing a strong combination of clean headroom, portability and stereo projection.
What is the famous Roland JC Clean sound?
JC Clean is the clear, detailed and relatively neutral clean tone associated with Roland's Jazz Chorus amplifiers. It is particularly valued for clean playing and for reproducing the character of effects pedals accurately.
Does the JC-40 have true stereo inputs?
Yes. Separate L/Mono and R inputs allow compatible stereo pedals, multi-effects units, modelling equipment and guitar synthesisers to feed the amplifier in stereo.
What is Dimensional Space Chorus?
Roland's Dimensional Space Chorus uses the JC-40's two independent amplifiers and speakers to reproduce direct and modulated signals separately. These sounds combine acoustically in the room to create the characteristic spacious Jazz Chorus effect.
Can I adjust the chorus?
Yes. The JC-40 offers both Fixed and Manual chorus modes. Manual mode provides dedicated Speed and Depth controls.
Does the JC-40 have reverb and vibrato?
Yes. Stereo reverb and vibrato are built in alongside the signature chorus effect.
Does it have distortion?
Yes. The JC-40 includes an onboard distortion circuit with its own dedicated level control.
Is the JC-40 a good pedal platform?
Yes. Its high-headroom clean sound makes it particularly well suited to guitarists who create their tones using pedals, multi-effects processors or modelling equipment.
Does it have an effects loop?
Yes. The JC-40 has a stereo effects loop with selectable Serial and Parallel operation, making it especially useful with stereo delays, reverbs and modulation effects.
Can I connect the JC-40 to a PA or recording system?
Yes. Separate Left/Mono and Right line outputs allow the amplifier's signal to be connected to compatible mixers, PA equipment and recording systems.
Can the onboard effects be controlled with a footswitch?
Yes. Compatible optional BOSS footswitches can remotely switch Chorus/Vibrato, Reverb and Distortion on and off.
Can I use headphones?
Yes. A dedicated 1/4-inch headphone output is provided for private practice and monitoring.
Is the JC-40 suitable for stereo pedalboards?
Yes. This is one of the JC-40's key strengths. Stereo front-panel inputs, dual speakers and a stereo effects loop make it an excellent single-combo solution for stereo pedalboards.
How does the JC-40 compare with the JC-120?
The JC-40 retains the essential Jazz Chorus characteristics—including stereo amplification, JC Clean tone and Dimensional Space Chorus—in a substantially smaller and lighter package than the flagship JC-120.
How much does the Roland JC-40 weigh?
