Description

The Yamaha CLP-865GP Clavinova Grand Digital Piano in Polished Ebony combines the elegant visual presence of a baby-grand-style cabinet with the sophisticated sound engine, connectivity and everyday practicality of Yamaha's CLP-800 Series.

The CLP-865GP is built around Yamaha's 88-note GrandTouch-S keyboard with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops and escapement. Unlike the CLP-845, the CLP-865GP does not use wooden white keys. Its keyboard specification is much closer to the CLP-835 platform, making accurate comparison particularly important.

Its piano sound engine is nevertheless highly sophisticated.

You can choose between two world-class concert grand Voices: the powerful Yamaha CFX and the warm, distinctive Bösendorfer Imperial. Yamaha combines these with Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) and Grand Expression Modeling to recreate the complex resonances and expressive tonal changes associated with an acoustic grand piano.

The CLP-865GP also features 256-note polyphony, 38 Voices, binaural sampling for both flagship grand pianos, 16-track MIDI recording, USB audio recording, Bluetooth Audio/MIDI, Smart Pianist compatibility and GrandTouch pedals.

Its substantial (45W + 35W) × 2 amplification system drives a two-way speaker configuration using 16cm speakers with diffusers and dedicated 5cm drivers.

Finished in luxurious Polished Ebony, the CLP-865GP is particularly attractive for customers who want the visual impact of a grand piano without the tuning, volume and maintenance requirements of a traditional acoustic instrument.

QUICK PRODUCT SUMMARY

The Yamaha CLP-865GP is a grand-piano-style digital piano featuring an 88-note GrandTouch-S keyboard with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops, Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial concert grand Voices, 256-note polyphony and a powerful two-way speaker system.

It shares much of its sound engine, recording system and digital functionality with Yamaha's CLP-835/845 family, while its keyboard specification is non-wooden and closer to the CLP-835 than the wooden-key CLP-845.

The defining attraction is the cabinet.

Its Polished Ebony baby-grand-style design gives the instrument far greater visual presence than a conventional upright Clavinova while still providing digital-piano advantages such as headphones, volume control, recording, Bluetooth and Smart Pianist integration.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

The CLP-865GP is about combining two very different things:

the visual presence of a grand piano and the practicality of a modern digital instrument.

Its sweeping cabinet immediately gives it a very different character from a conventional upright-style Clavinova.

But underneath that cabinet is a serious digital piano platform.

The GrandTouch-S action provides a responsive weighted keyboard.

The Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial provide two contrasting concert-grand Voices.

VRM adds complex resonance.

Grand Expression Modeling adds greater tonal response to the way you play.

And the substantial two-way amplification gives the instrument enough power to fill a home environment convincingly.

Then there are the digital advantages:

  • Volume control

  • Silent headphone practice

  • Recording

  • Bluetooth

  • USB audio

  • Smart Pianist

  • No acoustic tuning requirement

For many homes, that combination is hugely appealing.

GRANDTOUCH-S KEYBOARD

The Yamaha CLP-865GP features an 88-note GrandTouch-S keyboard.

This action provides:

  • Fully weighted hammer response

  • Synthetic ivory white-key surfaces

  • Synthetic ebony black-key surfaces

  • Escapement

  • Six Touch Sensitivity options

It is important to distinguish this action from the CLP-845.

The CLP-865GP does not use wooden white keys.

Yamaha's technical specification places its GrandTouch-S keyboard in the same synthetic-key category as the CLP-835.

SYNTHETIC EBONY & IVORY KEYTOPS

The white and black key surfaces use synthetic ivory and ebony materials.

These textured surfaces are designed to provide comfortable, secure contact beneath the fingers during longer playing sessions.

ESCAPEMENT

The GrandTouch-S action includes escapement.

This recreates an element of the subtle mechanical sensation experienced when playing an acoustic grand piano action slowly and with control.

SIX TOUCH SENSITIVITY SETTINGS

Keyboard response can be adjusted through:

  • Hard 2

  • Hard 1

  • Medium

  • Soft 1

  • Soft 2

  • Fixed

This lets the pianist tailor the dynamic response of the keyboard to personal playing style.

YAMAHA CFX CONCERT GRAND

The Yamaha CFX is Yamaha's flagship concert grand piano.

Its sampled Voice gives the CLP-865GP a clear, powerful and expressive principal piano character.

The CFX works alongside Yamaha's resonance and expression modelling technologies to create a more responsive digital piano experience.

BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL

Alongside the CFX is the Bösendorfer Imperial.

Bösendorfer's Viennese piano tradition gives the Imperial a distinct tonal character, providing a genuine alternative to the Yamaha CFX.

Having both instruments available means the pianist can choose between two recognisably different concert-grand personalities.

BINAURAL SAMPLING

The CLP-865GP supports Binaural Sampling for both the CFX Grand and Bösendorfer Voices.

This is particularly valuable when practising through headphones.

Instead of making the piano sound as though it exists only inside the headphones, binaural reproduction creates a more natural spatial impression around the pianist.

VIRTUAL RESONANCE MODELING – VRM

An acoustic grand piano is a complex resonating system.

Strings interact with one another.

The soundboard responds.

The body of the instrument contributes.

Pedalling alters which strings are free to vibrate.

Yamaha's Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) recreates these interactions digitally.

As notes combine, sustain and decay, the sound develops with greater richness and complexity.

GRAND EXPRESSION MODELING

Piano expression involves more than simply playing louder or softer.

Differences in the way keys are pressed and released can change the resulting tonal character.

Grand Expression Modeling recreates these subtle variations digitally, helping the CLP-865GP respond more naturally to articulation and technique.

256-NOTE POLYPHONY

The CLP-865GP provides 256-note maximum polyphony.

This provides substantial headroom for:

  • Complex repertoire

  • Sustain-pedal passages

  • Layered sounds

  • MIDI playback

  • Multi-track recording

38 VOICES

The CLP-865GP includes 38 instrument Voices.

Piano remains the main focus, but the additional sounds provide useful options for layering, splitting and creative playing.

GRANDTOUCH PEDALS

The CLP-865GP uses Yamaha's GrandTouch pedal system with:

  • Damper

  • Sostenuto

  • Soft

The damper supports half-pedalling, allowing much finer sustain control than a simple on/off pedal.

POWERFUL TWO-WAY SPEAKER SYSTEM

The CLP-865GP uses:

(45W + 35W) × 2 amplification

driving:

(16cm with diffuser + 5cm) × 2 speakers

This is an important correction from the previous listing.

The CLP-865GP does not use the CLP-845's (45W + 45W) × 2 amplifier and 16cm + 8cm speaker configuration.

Its speaker specification sits closer to—but is more powerful than—the CLP-835 system.

SPEAKER DIFFUSERS

The main 16cm speakers incorporate diffusers.

These help distribute sound into the surrounding space, contributing to a broader acoustic impression from the cabinet.

GRAND-STYLE CABINET

The defining physical feature of the CLP-865GP is its grand-piano-style cabinet.

This makes it dramatically different from the upright-style CLP-835 and CLP-845.

The cabinet gives the instrument:

  • Greater visual presence

  • A traditional grand-style silhouette

  • A premium furniture appearance

  • A focal-point role within the room

At the same time, you retain all the everyday advantages of a digital instrument.

NO ACOUSTIC TUNING REQUIRED

Unlike an acoustic grand piano, the CLP-865GP does not require routine tuning.

Its pitch is generated digitally.

That means you can enjoy the visual impact of a grand-style cabinet without the regular tuning requirements associated with an acoustic instrument.

VOLUME CONTROL

A digital piano lets you control the overall volume.

That means the CLP-865GP can be used comfortably in situations where a real acoustic grand would simply be too loud.

HEADPHONE PRACTICE

Two headphone outputs allow completely private practice.

This is one of the biggest practical advantages of choosing a digital grand.

Even though the CLP-865GP has a substantial speaker system, you can practise late at night or in a shared household without disturbing anyone else.

STEREOPHONIC OPTIMIZER

For applicable non-binaural Voices, Yamaha's Stereophonic Optimizer helps create a more natural spatial headphone experience.

DUAL / LAYER MODE

Dual mode allows two Voices to sound simultaneously across the keyboard.

For example:

Piano + Strings

This can create a broader combined texture.

SPLIT MODE

Split mode divides the keyboard into separate left- and right-hand Voice regions.

DUO MODE

Duo divides the keyboard into two equivalent pitch ranges.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Piano lessons

  • Teacher/student demonstrations

  • Side-by-side practice

20 BUILT-IN RHYTHMS

The CLP-865GP includes 20 Rhythms.

These provide straightforward rhythmic accompaniment for practice and informal playing.

MIDI RECORDING

The onboard MIDI recorder supports:

  • Up to 250 Songs

  • 16 tracks

  • Approx. 500KB per Song

  • Approx. 22,000 notes per Song

This allows significantly more sophisticated recording than a simple one- or two-track system.

USB AUDIO RECORDING

The CLP-865GP supports audio recording to compatible USB storage.

Yamaha specifies:

WAV – 44.1kHz / 16-bit stereo

with approximately 80 minutes maximum recording time per Song.

USB AUDIO INTERFACE

The built-in USB audio interface operates at:

44.1kHz / 24-bit stereo.

This allows high-quality digital audio communication with compatible computers and devices.

BLUETOOTH AUDIO & MIDI

Yamaha specifies Bluetooth Audio and MIDI, with availability varying according to area.

Bluetooth Audio allows compatible music to be streamed through the Clavinova's built-in sound system.

Bluetooth MIDI provides wireless MIDI communication with compatible devices and applications.

SMART PIANIST

The CLP-865GP supports Yamaha's Smart Pianist ecosystem.

This provides a graphical interface for compatible piano functions using a suitable smartphone or tablet.

INTELLIGENT ACOUSTIC CONTROL

Intelligent Acoustic Control – IAC adjusts tonal balance at lower volume settings.

This helps preserve clarity when practising quietly.

FULL-DOT LCD DISPLAY

The CLP-865GP includes a full-dot LCD display with physical buttons.

This provides direct access to Voices, Songs, recording and other settings without requiring a connected smart device.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The Yamaha CLP-865GP is particularly well suited to:

  • Intermediate pianists

  • Advanced pianists

  • Returning players

  • Serious beginners wanting a long-term instrument

  • Grade students

  • Piano teachers

  • Families wanting a premium home piano

  • Pianists who regularly use headphones

  • Customers attracted to a grand-piano-style cabinet

  • Homes where the piano will be a visual focal point

  • Players wanting digital convenience without an upright-style cabinet

  • Customers considering the CLP-835 but wanting a grand-style presentation

PLAYING STYLES & APPLICATIONS

The CLP-865GP is well suited to:

  • Classical repertoire

  • Contemporary piano

  • Jazz

  • Pop

  • Musical theatre

  • Examination practice

  • Technique development

  • Composition

  • Teaching

  • Duet lessons

HOW IT COMPARES

CLP-865GP vs CLP-835

This is the most useful technical comparison.

Both use a GrandTouch-S keyboard with synthetic ebony and ivory keytops and escapement.

Neither uses wooden white keys.

Both also provide:

  • Yamaha CFX

  • Bösendorfer Imperial

  • 256-note polyphony

  • 38 Voices

  • VRM

  • Grand Expression Modeling

  • Binaural Sampling for both principal grand Voices

  • 16-track MIDI recording

  • 24-bit USB audio

  • Bluetooth Audio/MIDI

The CLP-865GP then adds:

  • Grand-piano-style cabinet

  • More powerful (45W + 35W) × 2 amplification

  • Two-way 16cm + 5cm speaker system

  • Considerably greater visual presence

The CLP-835 uses 30W × 2 amplification with 16cm diffuser speakers.

So for FDM purposes, the CLP-865GP is best understood as a grand-style model with much more in common with the CLP-835 keyboard platform, but with a significantly upgraded cabinet and speaker system.

CLP-865GP vs CLP-845

The CLP-845 differs in two particularly important areas.

CLP-845

  • GrandTouch-S

  • Wooden white keys

  • (45W + 45W) × 2 amplification

  • (16cm + 8cm) × 2 two-way speaker system

  • Upright-style cabinet

CLP-865GP

  • GrandTouch-S

  • Non-wooden keys

  • (45W + 35W) × 2 amplification

  • (16cm + 5cm) × 2 speaker system

  • Grand-style cabinet

So although the two share much of Yamaha's digital sound and feature platform, the CLP-845 has the more advanced keyboard construction and stronger speaker specification, while the CLP-865GP provides the much more dramatic grand-style cabinet.

CLP-865GP vs CLP-895GP

The CLP-895GP sits much further up Yamaha's grand-style Clavinova range.

It introduces features including:

  • Full GrandTouch keyboard

  • Wooden white keys

  • 88-key Linear Graded Hammers

  • Counterweights

  • GP Response Damper

  • Much more sophisticated three-way amplification

  • Expanded Voice library

The CLP-865GP therefore provides a more accessible route into Yamaha's grand-style Clavinova format.

DIMENSIONS & PLACEMENT

The CLP-865GP measures approximately:

Width: 1,430mm
Height: 932mm
Depth: 1,146mm
Weight: 106kg

With the music rest raised:

Overall height: approximately 1,094mm.

The depth is particularly important.

At more than 1.14 metres deep, the CLP-865GP occupies a room very differently from an upright-style Clavinova.

We strongly recommend measuring the intended location carefully and allowing additional space for both the bench and player.

POLISHED EBONY GRAND CABINET

The CLP-865GP uses a Polished Ebony grand-style cabinet.

Its curved form and high-gloss finish give it significantly more visual presence than a conventional cabinet digital piano.

For customers who want the piano to function as an important piece of furniture as well as a musical instrument, this is a major part of its appeal.

POWER REQUIREMENTS

The Yamaha CLP-865GP uses the PA-500 AC adaptor.

DC Input: 24V
Power Consumption: 55W
Auto Power Off: Yes.

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Pianists who want Yamaha's CLP-835-class GrandTouch-S keyboard platform combined with stronger amplification and the dramatic appearance of a grand-piano-style cabinet.

Likely upgrade path: A natural consideration for players moving from Yamaha Arius models, portable weighted pianos, entry/mid-range Clavinovas or conventional upright-style digital pianos where the room presentation has become almost as important as the musical specification.

Useful pairings: Quality Yamaha headphones, USB flash memory for recording and Yamaha Smart Pianist on a compatible smartphone or tablet.

Our tip: Don't buy the CLP-865GP assuming you're getting a CLP-845 inside a grand cabinet. The keyboard is the crucial difference. The CLP-865GP uses the non-wooden GrandTouch-S action also found on the CLP-835, while the CLP-845 steps up to wooden white keys. If touch is your absolute priority, compare them physically. If you want the dramatic grand-style cabinet, the CLP-865GP offers something neither upright model can replicate visually.

FDM view: The CLP-865GP makes most sense when understood on its own terms: CLP-835-style keyboard technology, a stronger two-way speaker system and a grand-style polished cabinet. It is less about beating the CLP-845 on specification and more about delivering a convincing Clavinova experience in a completely different physical format.

A DIGITAL GRAND THAT MAKES SENSE ON ITS OWN TERMS

The Yamaha CLP-865GP isn't simply an upright Clavinova with a curved cabinet.

Its appeal is the combination of:

GrandTouch-S weighted keyboard. Yamaha CFX. Bösendorfer Imperial. VRM. Grand Expression Modeling. Powerful two-way speakers. GrandTouch pedals.

And then there is the cabinet.

The Polished Ebony grand-style design transforms the instrument from something that sits against the wall into something that becomes part of the room.

You retain the digital advantages:

Headphones. Volume control. Recording. Bluetooth. USB audio. Smart Pianist. No tuning requirement.

But you gain the visual presence associated with a grand piano.

For customers who want a more advanced keyboard action than an entry-level digital piano but prioritise the grand-piano presentation, the CLP-865GP occupies a distinctive place in Yamaha's range.
