Suhr Buffer – Used
Description
Quick Product Summary
The Suhr Buffer is a compact, high-quality signal buffer and line driver designed to preserve the clarity, high-frequency response and dynamics of your guitar signal through long cable runs and complex pedalboards.
This used example is in Good condition, showing cosmetic signs of previous ownership and normal pedalboard use. Alongside its primary buffered output, the Suhr Buffer features a second transformer-isolated ISO output with phase reversal, making it particularly useful for dual-amplifier and signal-splitting setups.
What Makes the Suhr Buffer Stand Out?
Preserve Your Guitar's Natural Tone
Long cables and multiple pedals can add capacitance to a guitar signal, often reducing high-frequency clarity. The Suhr Buffer uses unity-gain buffering, lowering the signal's output impedance without intentionally increasing its level.
Dual Outputs
A standard primary output is joined by a second ISO output, allowing the guitar signal to be sent to two separate destinations.
Transformer-Isolated Output
The ISO output uses transformer isolation to help reduce unwanted noise caused by ground loops when running two amplifiers or other parallel signal paths.
180° Phase Reversal
A dedicated phase switch reverses the polarity of the ISO output by 180 degrees, providing a simple way to correct phase issues between two amplifiers.
Compact Professional Construction
Suhr uses low-noise audiophile-grade op-amps, a glass-epoxy PCB and a machined billet-aluminium enclosure, giving the Buffer a rugged design suitable for professional pedalboards.
Who Is It For?
The Suhr Buffer is ideal for guitarists with larger pedalboards, long cable runs or dual-amplifier rigs who want to maintain signal clarity and consistency.
It is also useful for players building wet/dry rigs, splitting a guitar between amplifiers or integrating numerous true-bypass pedals into one signal chain.

Power Requirements
The Suhr Buffer requires a suitable centre-negative DC power supply.
Suhr specifies an operating range of 4.5V–18V DC, with 9V being the standard pedalboard supply voltage. Current consumption is extremely low at less than 5mA.
No power supply is included with this used unit.
FAQs
What does a Suhr Buffer do?
The Suhr Buffer converts the high-impedance signal from your guitar into a lower-impedance signal that is less affected by cable capacitance and long signal paths.
Does it increase the volume of my guitar?
No. The Suhr Buffer operates at unity gain, so its purpose is to preserve signal integrity rather than provide a volume boost.
Why would I need a buffer?
Long cables and multiple pedals can cause loss of high-frequency detail. A buffer helps maintain a clearer, more consistent signal through the complete pedalboard and cable run.
Where should I place the Suhr Buffer?
Suhr recommends placing it near the beginning of the signal chain.
Should it go before a Fuzz Face or Tone Bender?
Vintage-style impedance-sensitive fuzz pedals such as Fuzz Face and Tone Bender designs generally work best before the Buffer, allowing them to interact directly with the guitar's pickups.
Does the Suhr Buffer have two outputs?
Yes. It provides a normal primary output and a second transformer-isolated ISO output.
What is the ISO output used for?
The ISO output allows the signal to be sent to a second amplifier or signal path while transformer isolation helps minimise ground-loop noise.
What does the phase switch do?
The phase switch reverses the ISO output by 180 degrees, helping correct phase differences between two connected amplifiers.
Is it useful for a dual-amp setup?
Yes. The isolated second output and phase switch make the Suhr Buffer particularly useful when splitting one guitar signal between two amplifiers.
Does it add distortion or colour to the sound?
The Suhr Buffer is designed as a transparent line driver, preserving the character and output level of the incoming instrument signal.
What is the input impedance?
Input impedance is 1MΩ, providing a suitable load for typical passive guitar pickups.
What is the output impedance?
Output impedance is a low 150Ω, helping the signal drive longer cable runs effectively.
How much current does it draw?
Current consumption is less than 5mA, making it very economical on a pedalboard power supply.
Can it run at 18V?
Yes. Suhr specifies operation up to 18V DC.
Is a power supply included?
No. No power supply is included with this used Suhr Buffer.
What condition is this example in?
This example is graded Good, with cosmetic signs of previous use consistent with a pre-owned pedalboard utility.
