Why Choose the ESP LTD Phoenix-204DX?
Distinctive Phoenix Body Shape
The Phoenix-204DX moves away from conventional bass designs with its sweeping offset body and elongated curves.
Its reverse-inspired shape creates an instantly recognisable stage appearance while offering a comfortable platform for standing and seated playing. It is an excellent choice for bassists who want an instrument with more visual personality than a traditional double-cutaway bass.
Burled Poplar Top
The Phoenix-204DX features a naturally figured burled poplar top.
Burl figuring is created by irregular grain patterns, knots and swirling lines within the wood, giving each instrument an individual appearance. The Black Burst finish darkens towards the edges while leaving the central figuring clearly visible.
No two examples will display exactly the same grain pattern.
Lightweight Poplar Body
Poplar provides a balanced tonal response while helping keep the instrument manageable during longer rehearsals, recording sessions and live performances.
Its clear fundamental character gives the pickups a neutral platform, allowing the active electronics to shape the bass for different amplifiers, musical styles and playing techniques.
Roasted Maple Neck
The neck is made from roasted maple, which has undergone a controlled heating process to remove excess moisture from the wood.
This gives the neck a smooth, responsive feel and creates its distinctive darker appearance. Roasted maple is also valued for its stability, making it well suited to an instrument intended for regular rehearsal, stage and studio use.
Comfortable Thin U Profile
ESP’s Thin U neck profile provides a streamlined playing feel without becoming excessively narrow.
It supports:
-
Fast movement between positions
-
Comfortable chordal bass playing
-
Fingerstyle technique
-
Picked rhythm playing
-
Slap and pop techniques
-
Extended practice and performance sessions
Full 34-Inch Scale
The 34-inch scale is the established standard for many four-string electric basses.
It provides familiar string tension and a strong fundamental response, making the Phoenix-204DX comfortable for players moving from another full-scale bass. It also supports clear low notes and stable performance in standard or moderately lowered tunings.
Rosewood Fingerboard
The rosewood fingerboard offers a smooth surface with a comfortable, natural playing feel.
Its traditional tonal character complements the clarity of the roasted maple neck while adding warmth and body to sustained notes.
21 Extra-Jumbo Frets
The Phoenix-204DX is fitted with 21 extra-jumbo frets.
The larger fret size allows notes to be played cleanly with a lighter fretting touch and supports smooth slides, bends and vibrato. Twenty-one frets provide ample range for traditional bass lines, melodic passages and upper-register playing.
Reverse Headstock
The reverse headstock reinforces the Phoenix bass’s bold visual identity.
It complements the flowing body shape and gives the instrument a distinctive profile that stands out immediately on stage.
Dual ESP Designed SB-4 Humbuckers
The Phoenix-204DX is equipped with an ESP Designed SB-4N neck pickup and SB-4B bridge pickup.
These humbuckers provide a strong, low-noise signal with enough clarity for clean amplification and enough power for driven rock and metal tones.
The two pickup positions offer noticeably different tonal characters.
Neck Pickup
The neck-position SB-4N produces a fuller and rounder sound with strong low-frequency weight.
It works particularly well for:
-
Warm fingerstyle bass
-
Sustained notes
-
Traditional supporting bass lines
-
Rounded clean tones
-
Heavy low-end foundations
Bridge Pickup
The bridge-position SB-4B offers a tighter response with greater midrange definition and attack.
It is ideal for:
-
Picked rock bass
-
Faster passages
-
Aggressive rhythm playing
-
Defined studio tones
-
Bass parts that need to cut through dense arrangements
Pickup Balance Control
The balance control allows the two pickups to be blended rather than selected using a switch.
Turning towards the neck pickup creates a warmer and deeper response, while moving towards the bridge pickup introduces more attack and midrange definition.
The centre setting combines both pickups for a broad and balanced tone.
Active Tone Boost
The active Tone Boost control provides additional tonal shaping directly from the bass.
It allows the Phoenix-204DX to move from warmer, smoother sounds to brighter and more assertive tones without requiring immediate adjustments to the amplifier.
This is especially useful for live performers who need to change tonal emphasis quickly between songs or playing techniques.
LTD DB-4 Fixed Bridge
The LTD DB-4 bridge provides a stable anchor point for the strings and allows the instrument’s string height and intonation to be adjusted during setup.
Its fixed design is straightforward to maintain and delivers a consistent response beneath the picking hand.
LTD Vintage-Style Tuners
LTD vintage-style tuning machines complement the Phoenix body’s retro-influenced appearance while providing smooth and accurate tuning adjustment.
The black finish matches the bridge, pickups and control hardware for a coordinated overall design.
Why Choose a Four-String Bass?
A four-string bass provides the traditional E, A, D and G tuning used across countless musical styles.
Its familiar layout makes it suitable for:
-
New bass players
-
Guitarists moving to bass
-
Traditional rock and pop bass lines
-
Punk and alternative music
-
Funk and soul
-
Recording and songwriting
-
Experienced players who prefer classic string spacing
Compared with a five-string bass, a four-string instrument generally has a narrower neck and a more familiar playing feel. This can make muting, fast position changes and traditional bass techniques more comfortable.
Who Is It For?
Beginner Bassists
The familiar four-string layout and straightforward controls make the Phoenix-204DX accessible to new players.
Its full-scale neck provides the experience of playing a standard professional-style bass, while the pickup balance control makes it easy to understand how pickup position affects tone.
Intermediate Players
Developing bassists will appreciate the roasted maple neck, dual humbuckers and active Tone Boost circuit as they explore different playing techniques and musical styles.
Rock and Metal Bassists
The bold body shape, strong pickup output and defined bridge-pickup sound make the Phoenix-204DX a natural fit for rock and heavier music.
Punk and Alternative Players
Its direct response and distinctive stage presence suit musicians who want a bass that looks and sounds energetic without becoming complicated to operate.
Recording Musicians
The pickup blend and active tone control allow several useful sounds to be created before the signal reaches an audio interface, amplifier or recording console.
Live Performers
The visually striking design and flexible electronics make the Phoenix-204DX well suited to players who need one bass to cover several sounds during a performance.
Sound and Playing Character
The Phoenix-204DX delivers a clear, powerful bass sound with enough flexibility to handle both supportive and more aggressive playing styles.
Blending towards the neck pickup produces a deeper, rounder response that works well beneath guitars, keyboards and vocals.
Moving towards the bridge pickup creates a more focused sound with additional attack, helping fast notes and picked bass lines remain clearly audible.
Combining both pickups delivers a balanced tone suitable for general-purpose live and studio use.
The active Tone Boost can then be used to give the selected pickup blend greater presence and definition.
The Phoenix-204DX is particularly effective for:
-
Classic and modern rock
-
Hard rock
-
Heavy metal
-
Punk
-
Alternative music
-
Grunge
-
Pop-rock
-
Fingerstyle bass
-
Picked rhythm playing
-
Clean studio recording
Black Burst Finish
The Black Burst finish emphasises the natural pattern of the burled poplar top.
Its darker outer edges frame the body, while the lighter centre reveals the knots and irregular figuring beneath the finish. This gives the bass a dramatic appearance without covering the natural character of the top.
Black hardware, pickups and control knobs complete the modern aesthetic, while the reverse headstock reinforces the Phoenix’s unmistakable visual identity.

ESP LTD Phoenix-204DX Compared with Other Bass Guitars
Compared with the ESP LTD B-204DX
The B-204DX uses a more conventional modern double-cutaway body shape and provides separate bass and treble EQ controls.
The Phoenix-204DX offers the more dramatic Phoenix body design and a simplified volume, balance and Tone Boost control layout.
Both models use poplar bodies, figured tops, roasted maple necks and ESP Designed SB-4 pickups.
Compared with the ESP LTD Phoenix-1004
Higher-range Phoenix basses offer more advanced construction, hardware and electronics for professional players.
The Phoenix-204DX captures the essential visual identity and playing concept of the Phoenix Series at a much more accessible level.
Compared with a Traditional P-Style Bass
A traditional split-pickup bass usually offers a thicker, focused midrange sound with a simpler passive control layout.
The Phoenix-204DX provides two humbuckers, pickup blending and active tone control, giving it a wider range of modern sounds.
Compared with a Traditional J-Style Bass
A traditional twin-single-coil bass is known for its bright attack and detailed pickup blending.
The Phoenix-204DX’s humbuckers offer a fuller response with reduced noise, making it particularly effective for heavier amplification and driven tones.
Compared with a Five-String Bass
A five-string bass adds a low B string for extended range but usually has a wider neck.
The four-string Phoenix-204DX retains familiar string spacing and a traditional playing range, making it comfortable for players who do not need the additional low notes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the ESP SB-4 pickups active?
The SB-4 pickups provide the bass’s core signal, while the onboard active Tone Boost circuit handles additional tonal shaping.
What does the balance control do?
The balance control blends between the neck and bridge pickups. The centre position combines both, while turning in either direction emphasises one pickup.
Is the Phoenix-204DX suitable for beginners?
Yes. It has a familiar four-string layout and an easy-to-understand control system. Its 34-inch scale also gives beginners experience with a standard full-scale bass.
Can it be used for slap bass?
Yes. Blending both pickups and using the active Tone Boost can produce a clear, defined response suitable for slap and pop techniques.
Is it suitable for metal?
Yes. The humbucking pickups, bridge-pickup definition and active tone control make it well suited to rock, hard rock and metal.
Can it produce warmer vintage-style sounds?
Yes. Blending towards the neck pickup and using a restrained Tone Boost setting creates a fuller, rounder sound suitable for traditional bass lines.

Does the bass work with a standard amplifier?
Yes. It connects to a conventional bass amplifier, pedalboard, DI box or audio interface using a standard instrument cable.
