Description

The Yamaha CVP-701B Clavinova Digital Piano in Black combines a fully weighted 88-note piano keyboard with the extensive Voices, automatic accompaniment, recording, learning and entertainment features that define Yamaha’s CVP Clavinova range.

At its heart is Yamaha’s GH3X – Graded Hammer 3X keyboard, featuring synthetic ivory keytops and escapement. The graded hammer action is designed to reproduce the heavier response of the lower register and progressively lighter response towards the treble, while its three-sensor system supports responsive repeated notes.

For acoustic piano sound, the CVP-701 features two world-renowned concert grands:

  • Yamaha CFX

  • Bösendorfer Imperial

These are enhanced by Yamaha’s Virtual Resonance Modeling – VRM, Key-Off Samples and Smooth Release technology.

But the CVP-701 goes far beyond being simply a digital piano.

It provides 777 preset Voices, 29 Drum/SFX Kits, 480 XG Voices, 310 accompaniment Styles, 256-note polyphony, 16-track MIDI recording, USB WAV audio recording, microphone connectivity, Guide Lamps, Piano Room, a 4.3-inch colour display and extensive connectivity.

This makes the CVP-701B a remarkably versatile instrument for anyone who wants to do more than simply practise piano.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

The CVP-701 is fundamentally different from a conventional digital piano.

You can sit down and simply play the Yamaha CFX or Bösendorfer Imperial like a traditional Clavinova.

But when you want more, the instrument opens up an enormous range of possibilities.

Select a Style and the CVP can become your backing band.

Choose from hundreds of instrument Voices.

Display music notation on screen.

Follow the Guide Lamps.

Record a multi-track arrangement.

Record your performance as a WAV audio file.

Connect a microphone.

Play along with backing tracks.

Build registrations for favourite songs.

Or open Piano Room when you simply want to concentrate on playing piano.

That breadth is what makes the CVP concept so distinctive.

GH3X – GRADED HAMMER 3X KEYBOARD

The CVP-701 uses Yamaha’s GH3X – Graded Hammer 3X keyboard.

Its weighting changes across the keyboard:

  • Heavier in the bass

  • Progressively lighter through the middle

  • Lighter towards the treble

This recreates an important characteristic of an acoustic piano keyboard.

The action also incorporates a three-sensor system, allowing the instrument to detect repeated notes effectively without requiring the key to return fully to its original position.

SYNTHETIC IVORY KEYTOPS

The white keys use synthetic ivory keytops.

Their textured surface is designed to provide secure finger contact and a more piano-like tactile experience than basic smooth plastic key surfaces.

ESCAPEMENT

GH3X incorporates escapement.

This recreates an element of the subtle tactile sensation experienced when playing an acoustic grand piano key slowly and softly.

TOUCH RESPONSE

The CVP-701 provides multiple Touch Response settings:

  • Hard 2

  • Hard 1

  • Medium

  • Soft 1

  • Soft 2

  • Fixed

This allows the keyboard’s dynamic response to be tailored to the player.

YAMAHA CFX CONCERT GRAND

The Yamaha CFX is Yamaha’s flagship concert grand piano.

The CVP-701 includes a dedicated CFX piano Voice, giving the instrument a powerful and expressive principal acoustic-piano character.

BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL

The Bösendorfer Imperial provides a contrasting European concert-grand character.

Having both Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial sounds gives the pianist two distinct flagship acoustic-piano personalities within the same instrument.

VIRTUAL RESONANCE MODELING – VRM

An acoustic grand piano is an interconnected resonating system.

Strings interact.

The soundboard responds.

Pedalling changes which strings are free to resonate.

The cabinet itself contributes to the overall sound.

Yamaha’s Virtual Resonance Modeling – VRM recreates these complex interactions digitally, helping the piano sound develop more naturally as notes and pedals interact.

KEY-OFF SAMPLES

The CVP-701 includes Key-Off Samples.

These reproduce elements of the subtle sounds generated when acoustic piano keys are released, contributing additional realism to the overall piano experience.

SMOOTH RELEASE

Yamaha’s Smooth Release technology helps reproduce the tonal differences that occur according to how a pianist releases the keys.

This contributes to more natural articulation, particularly during expressive acoustic-piano playing.

256-NOTE POLYPHONY

The CVP-701 provides up to 256-note polyphony.

This is particularly important on a CVP because the instrument may simultaneously be handling:

  • Piano performance

  • Sustain

  • VRM resonance

  • Layered Voices

  • Accompaniment Styles

  • Song playback

  • Multi-part arrangements

HUGE VOICE LIBRARY

The CVP-701 provides an extensive collection of sounds.

Yamaha specifies:

777 preset Voices

plus:

29 Drum/SFX Kits

and:

480 XG Voices

The featured Voice technologies include:

  • 10 VRM Voices

  • 49 Super Articulation Voices

  • 23 Mega Voices

  • 13 Natural! Voices

  • 26 Sweet! Voices

  • 58 Cool! Voices

  • 70 Live! Voices

  • 20 Organ Flutes! Voices

This turns the CVP-701 into far more than an acoustic-piano substitute.

SUPER ARTICULATION VOICES

Yamaha’s Super Articulation Voices are designed to reproduce characteristic performance details of acoustic instruments.

Depending on the selected Voice and playing technique, these can recreate elements such as instrumental articulations that would be difficult to achieve using a conventional keyboard sample alone.

ORGAN FLUTES!

The CVP-701 includes Yamaha’s Organ Flutes! system.

This provides organ-style control and allows users to create and edit organ registrations rather than relying solely on fixed presets.

DUAL & SPLIT

The keyboard supports:

Dual / Layer

and:

Split

This allows sounds to be combined or assigned to different areas of the keyboard.

Examples include:

Piano + Strings

or:

Bass in the left hand + Piano in the right hand

310 ACCOMPANIMENT STYLES

One of the defining features of the CVP-701 is its 310 automatic accompaniment Styles.

Styles provide interactive backing across a huge variety of musical formats.

The accompaniment responds to the chords you play and can provide a complete backing arrangement around your performance.

FULL STYLE CONTROL

The Style system provides:

  • 3 Introductions

  • 4 Main Variations

  • 4 Fill sections

  • Break

  • 3 Endings

This allows arrangements to be developed dynamically while playing.

ONE TOUCH SETTING

Each Style provides four One Touch Settings.

These can instantly configure suitable panel settings for the selected Style, making it easier to get from choosing a musical style to actually playing.

STYLE RECOMMENDER

Not sure which accompaniment Style suits what you want to play?

Style Recommender helps identify appropriate Styles based on the musical feel or rhythm you provide.

STYLE CREATOR

The CVP-701 also includes Style Creator, allowing more advanced users to customise and create accompaniment Styles.

MUSIC FINDER

The instrument includes 1,200 Music Finder records.

Music Finder was designed to help players quickly locate suitable panel and Style settings for particular musical situations.

PIANO ROOM

Sometimes you do not want hundreds of Voices and accompaniment options.

You simply want to play piano.

Piano Room provides a dedicated environment centred around the instrument’s acoustic and electric piano sounds.

It gives quick access to the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial and provides a more focused piano-playing environment.

SESSION MODE

Within Piano Room, the CVP-701 can provide virtual session musicians.

Three virtual musicians can accompany your playing, automatically responding to the harmony you provide.

Session Mode offers 40 musical Styles, allowing the pianist to explore playing with an interactive virtual ensemble.

4.3-INCH COLOUR DISPLAY

The CVP-701 features a:

4.3-inch TFT colour LCD

with:

480 × 272-dot resolution

The display provides access to the instrument’s extensive functions while also supporting:

  • Score display

  • Lyrics display

  • Menu navigation

  • Voice and Style selection

  • Recording functions

SCORE DISPLAY

Compatible song data can be displayed as musical notation directly on the CVP-701’s screen.

This makes the display useful for learning, rehearsal and playback.

LYRICS DISPLAY

Compatible song files containing lyric information can display those lyrics directly on screen.

This is especially useful when the instrument is being used with its microphone and accompaniment capabilities.

GUIDE LAMPS

The CVP-701 incorporates Guide Lamps above the keyboard.

These can indicate which keys should be played during compatible lesson and Guide functions.

For beginners and returning players, this provides a visual route into learning music directly from the instrument.

LESSON & GUIDE FUNCTIONS

Guide functions include:

  • Follow Lights

  • Any Key

  • Karao-Key

  • Your Tempo

These provide different approaches to practising and interacting with compatible songs.

PERFORMANCE ASSISTANT TECHNOLOGY

The CVP-701 also incorporates Yamaha’s Performance Assistant Technology – PAT.

This is designed to make interactive playing with compatible Song material more accessible.

65 PRESET SONGS

The CVP-701 contains 65 preset Songs.

These can be used for listening, learning and exploring the instrument’s Song functions.

16-TRACK MIDI RECORDING

The CVP-701 provides a powerful 16-track MIDI recorder.

This is a substantial step beyond the basic two-track recording systems found on many conventional digital pianos.

Individual musical parts can be recorded separately, making it possible to build detailed arrangements using multiple Voices and accompaniment elements.

USB AUDIO RECORDING

Performances can also be recorded as WAV audio to a compatible USB flash drive.

Unlike MIDI recording, this captures the resulting audio performance.

That makes it useful for:

  • Listening back

  • Sharing performances

  • Archiving finished recordings

  • Recording vocals and accompaniment

  • Creating playable audio files

AUDIO PLAYBACK TOOLS

The CVP-701 includes several useful audio functions:

Time Stretch

Change playback speed without changing pitch.

Pitch Shift

Change the pitch without changing playback speed.

Vocal Cancel

Reduce centrally positioned material such as lead vocals in suitable audio recordings.

These features can be particularly useful for learning and playing along with existing music.

MICROPHONE INPUT

The CVP-701 provides a Microphone / Line input with input-level control.

This allows a microphone to be incorporated into the instrument setup for singing and performance.

REGISTRATION MEMORY

Eight Registration Memory buttons allow combinations of panel settings to be stored for quick recall.

Registration functions include:

  • Eight registration buttons

  • Registration Sequence

  • Freeze

For players using the CVP’s extensive Voice and Style capabilities, registrations can make live operation considerably quicker.

CONNECTIVITY

The CVP-701 provides an extensive selection of connections:

  • 2 × Headphone outputs

  • Microphone / Line input

  • MIDI IN

  • MIDI OUT

  • MIDI THRU

  • AUX IN stereo mini jack

  • AUX OUT L/L+R and R

  • AUX pedal input

  • USB TO DEVICE

  • USB TO HOST

This reflects the CVP-701’s role as both a home piano and a broader music workstation.

USB FLASH DRIVE SUPPORT

The USB TO DEVICE port supports compatible USB flash drives.

These can be used for functions including:

  • Song data

  • Audio recording

  • Audio playback

  • File management

  • Registration data

THREE-PEDAL SYSTEM

The CVP-701 incorporates three pedals.

Standard piano functions include:

  • Sustain / Damper

  • Sostenuto

  • Soft

Half-pedal operation is supported.

The pedals can also be assigned to additional functions depending on the operating mode.

25W × 2 AMPLIFICATION

The CVP-701 uses:

25W × 2 amplification

driving:

16cm speakers × 2

This integrated stereo system provides the instrument with its own home-piano amplification without requiring external speakers.

INTELLIGENT ACOUSTIC CONTROL

Intelligent Acoustic Control – IAC automatically adjusts aspects of tonal balance when the instrument is played at lower volume.

This helps maintain useful bass and treble presence during quieter home practice.

STEREOPHONIC OPTIMIZER

The CVP-701 also incorporates Yamaha’s Stereophonic Optimizer for a more spacious and natural headphone listening experience.

PRIVATE HEADPHONE PRACTICE

Two headphone outputs allow the CVP-701 to be played silently.

HOW IT DIFFERS FROM A CLP CLAVINOVA

Yamaha’s CLP and CVP instruments share the Clavinova name, but their priorities are different.

CLP

Primarily focused on the experience of playing piano.

Typical priorities include:

  • Acoustic piano feel

  • Acoustic piano sound

  • Pedalling

  • Simple operation

  • Traditional home-piano use

CVP

Combines piano performance with a much broader interactive music system.

The CVP-701 adds features such as:

  • Hundreds of Voices

  • 310 Styles

  • Automatic accompaniment

  • Colour screen

  • Guide Lamps

  • Score display

  • Lyrics display

  • 16-track recording

  • Microphone input

  • Audio recording

  • Registration Memory

If you mainly want to sit down and play piano, a CLP may be the more focused choice.

If you want to play, arrange, accompany, sing, record and explore hundreds of sounds, the CVP concept offers considerably more.

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Home musicians wanting far more than a conventional digital piano — particularly players who enjoy accompaniment, multiple instrument sounds, arranging, recording, learning functions and singing.

Likely upgrade path: Particularly relevant for owners of older CVP Clavinovas, arranger keyboards or basic digital pianos who want the convenience of an integrated cabinet instrument with extensive interactive features.

Useful pairings: Quality headphones, compatible USB flash storage and a suitable microphone for users wanting to explore the vocal functions.

Our tip: Do not compare the CVP-701 purely by the number of piano Voices. Its real strength is the combination of piano + arranger + learning system + recorder + entertainment workstation. If you only need acoustic piano performance, a CLP is simpler. If you will genuinely use Styles, Voices, recording and interactive features, the CVP makes much more sense.

FDM view: The CVP-701 was the entry point into Yamaha’s CVP-700 generation, but “entry level” is slightly misleading when you look at what is actually inside it. GH3X, CFX and Bösendorfer piano sounds, VRM, 256-note polyphony, 310 Styles, hundreds of Voices, 16-track recording, WAV audio and a colour screen make this an exceptionally feature-rich home instrument.
