Ashdown PBM-200 Bass Amplifier Head
Description
Ashdown UK-PBM-200 – Pocket-Sized Bass Power, Built in the UK
The Ashdown UK-PBM-200 Pocket Bass Magnifier is an ultra-compact bass amplifier head designed for players who want a genuinely portable rig without giving up the essentials needed for rehearsals, recording and live performance.
Hand-assembled in the UK and finished in distinctive Ice Blue, the PBM-200 delivers 196 watts RMS into 4 ohms and 140 watts RMS into 8 ohms from a chassis measuring just 210mm wide.
The idea is simple: give bassists a capable amplifier that can travel alongside the rest of their gear rather than requiring another large, heavy case.
A responsive 3-band EQ, classic Ashdown Pre-Shape, balanced DI connectivity and headphone output give the PBM-200 enough flexibility to work as a compact rehearsal head, home practice amplifier, studio front-end or lightweight live rig.
For bassists who value portability but still want a proper amplifier rather than a stripped-back practice solution, the PBM-200 is a particularly appealing option.
Why Choose the Ashdown UK-PBM-200?
Serious Bass Power in an Ultra-Compact Head
The main attraction is obvious as soon as you see it.
At just:
210 × 62 × 118mm
the PBM-200 occupies remarkably little space.
Despite those dimensions, Ashdown rates the amplifier at:
- 196 watts RMS into 4 ohms
- 140 watts RMS into 8 ohms
That makes it considerably more capable than its physical size suggests.
For rehearsals, smaller performances and venues where the bass is also being sent to the PA system, it provides a practical alternative to transporting a substantially larger amplifier.
Classic Ashdown Pre-Shape
One of the most useful controls on the PBM-200 is Ashdown's familiar Pre-Shape function.
Rather than spending time adjusting several EQ controls individually, Pre-Shape gives you an immediate tonal contour designed to produce a clear, polished bass sound.
This is particularly useful when:
- Setting up quickly before a rehearsal
- Moving between different cabinets
- Playing through unfamiliar stage equipment
- You want a strong starting point before further EQ adjustment
- You need an immediately usable bass tone
You can then use the main EQ section to fine-tune the response for your bass, cabinet and room.
Simple Three-Band EQ
The PBM-200 deliberately avoids an overly complicated control panel.
Instead, you get straightforward Bass, Middle and Treble EQ, allowing you to quickly adjust the frequencies that have the biggest impact on your overall sound.
Need more weight?
Add bass.
Need the instrument to push through guitars and keyboards?
Work with the midrange.
Need additional attack and clarity?
Bring up the treble.
For players who would rather spend their time playing than navigating menus or extensive tone-shaping systems, this simplicity is one of the PBM-200's biggest strengths.
Built-In DI for Live and Studio Use
A DI output considerably expands what you can do with such a compact amplifier.
On stage, the PBM-200 can send your bass signal directly to the front-of-house mixing system while your connected speaker cabinet provides your own on-stage sound.
That makes it particularly useful for modern venues where the PA system handles the majority of the bass reaching the audience.
It is also useful for recording, allowing the amplifier to become part of a straightforward bass tracking setup.
For players regularly moving between rehearsal rooms, stages and studios, having a DI built directly into the amp means one less separate device to carry.
Headphone Output for Silent Practice
The PBM-200 isn't limited to cabinet-based playing.
A dedicated headphone output allows the amplifier to become part of a compact silent-practice setup.
That makes it useful for:
- Late-night practice
- Flats and shared accommodation
- Hotel rooms
- Backstage warm-ups
- Touring
- Home practice without setting up a speaker cabinet
This flexibility is particularly valuable for musicians buying one amplifier to cover several different situations.
Who Is the Ashdown PBM-200 For?
Gigging Bassists Who Travel Light
If you're tired of transporting bulky bass amplification, the PBM-200 is an obvious option.
Its compact dimensions mean it can be easily incorporated into a lightweight gigging setup.
Pair it with a suitable compact cabinet and you have a bass rig that is dramatically easier to move than traditional heavyweight amplifier systems.
Players Using Venue PA Systems
Many modern gigs rely heavily on front-of-house reinforcement.
In those situations you don't necessarily need a huge amplifier behind you.
The PBM-200 allows you to run a suitable cabinet for personal monitoring while using its DI connection to send your signal into the main PA.
For pub gigs, clubs and smaller venues, this can be a very practical approach.
Rehearsing Musicians
The PBM-200's combination of compact dimensions and useful output makes it ideal for carrying between home and rehearsal rooms.
Rather than relying on whatever amplifier happens to be available at the rehearsal space, you can bring the familiar control and response of your own amp.
Home Players
The headphone output means you don't have to connect a large cabinet whenever you want to practise.
It therefore makes sense for players who want a proper amplifier for rehearsals and gigs but still need something practical at home.
Touring Musicians
Ashdown has equipped the PBM-200 with 100–240V, 50/60Hz auto-voltage operation.
That makes it considerably more convenient when travelling internationally, as the amplifier can accommodate different mains voltages without requiring a separate voltage transformer.
For musicians travelling with minimal equipment, that is a genuinely useful feature.
Players Looking for a Backup Bass Head
A backup amplifier that is too large to carry isn't particularly useful.
The compact dimensions of the PBM-200 make it an excellent candidate for keeping alongside your main rig.
Even players using substantially more powerful bass heads may appreciate having such a small amplifier available if their primary amp develops a problem at a rehearsal or gig.
How Much Volume Can a 200-Watt Bass Head Produce?
Bass amplifier wattage can be misleading when considered on its own.
The PBM-200 delivers 196 watts RMS into a 4-ohm speaker load and 140 watts RMS into 8 ohms, but the actual volume you experience will also depend heavily on the cabinet connected to it.
Factors including:
- Speaker efficiency
- Number of speakers
- Cabinet design
- Cabinet impedance
- Room size
- Stage volume
- Playing style
all affect the final result.
A sensitive 4-ohm bass cabinet can make surprisingly effective use of the PBM-200's available output.
For small and medium performances where your DI signal is also being sent through the venue PA system, huge amounts of backline power are often unnecessary.
Understanding 4-Ohm and 8-Ohm Bass Cabinets
Choosing the right cabinet is particularly important with any bass amplifier.
The PBM-200 is designed to operate with a minimum speaker impedance of 4 ohms.
Its rated power is:
| Speaker Load | PBM-200 Output |
|---|---|
| 4 Ohms | 196W RMS |
| 8 Ohms | 140W RMS |
A 4-ohm cabinet therefore allows the amplifier to deliver its maximum rated output.
An 8-ohm cabinet produces less total output but may give you additional flexibility depending on how you plan to build your bass rig.
The important point is that the total connected speaker load must never fall below the amplifier's 4-ohm minimum.

Ashdown PBM-200 vs Other Compact Bass Heads
Ashdown PBM-200 vs Warwick Gnome
The Warwick Gnome is one of the most obvious alternatives in the compact bass-head market.
Both provide approximately 200 watts into 4 ohms, a 3-band EQ, headphone output and DI connectivity.
The Ashdown stands apart through its UK assembly, Ashdown Pre-Shape circuit and 100–240V auto-voltage operation.
The Warwick is physically smaller and lighter, while the PBM-200 offers a particularly compelling option for players who want Ashdown's approach to bass amplification in an extremely portable package.
Choose the PBM-200 if: UK assembly, Ashdown's Pre-Shape and international auto-voltage operation are priorities.
Choose the Gnome if: achieving the absolute minimum size and weight matters most.
Ashdown PBM-200 vs Trace Elliot ELF
The Trace Elliot ELF helped establish the modern ultra-small bass head as a serious gigging option.
Like the PBM-200, it produces around 200 watts into 4 ohms and is designed around portability.
The choice largely comes down to the character and control philosophy you prefer.
The Ashdown adds the familiar Pre-Shape function alongside straightforward three-band EQ and brings its own distinctive British amplification heritage to the format.
Choose the PBM-200 if: you like Ashdown's simple control layout and instant Pre-Shape option.
Choose the ELF if: you particularly want Trace Elliot's approach to compact amplification.
Ashdown PBM-200 vs Larger 300–500W Bass Heads
A larger amplifier will generally offer more clean headroom and may be preferable when competing directly with loud acoustic drums and guitar amplifiers without PA support.
Where the PBM-200 wins is portability.
If your typical setup involves:
- Smaller venues
- PA support
- Rehearsals
- Studio sessions
- In-ear monitoring
- Lightweight cabinets
- Frequent travel
carrying considerably more amplifier than you actually need may offer little practical advantage.
Why a Micro Bass Head Makes Sense for Modern Gigging
Bass amplification has changed significantly.
There was a time when a powerful bass rig almost automatically meant a large amplifier and extremely heavy speaker cabinet.
Modern amplifier technology allows musicians to reduce the size of the amplification section dramatically.
That matters because the amplifier is only one part of what most gigging musicians already need to transport.
Add a bass, pedalboard, cables, stands and other accessories, and every reduction in size and weight becomes worthwhile.
The PBM-200 takes that idea particularly seriously.
At only 210mm wide and 62mm high, it is small enough to become an everyday piece of equipment rather than something you debate bringing to every session.
Real-World Uses
The Ashdown UK-PBM-200 works particularly well as:
Compact Gigging Head
Connect it to a suitable bass cabinet and use the DI output to feed front of house.
Rehearsal Amp
Carry your own familiar amplifier rather than depending entirely on rehearsal-room equipment.
Studio Bass Head
Use the DI connectivity as part of your recording signal chain.
Silent Practice Rig
Connect headphones for private playing without needing to run a cabinet.
Touring Amplifier
Its small dimensions and auto-voltage operation make it particularly useful for travelling musicians.
Emergency Backup Head
Keep it alongside a larger rig as an extremely compact backup amplifier.
Recommended Pairings
Compact Bass Cabinets
A portable amp deserves a portable cabinet.
Pair the PBM-200 with a suitable 4-ohm or 8-ohm bass cabinet rated to safely handle the amplifier's output.
Compact 1x10, 1x12 and lightweight multi-speaker designs can create an extremely manageable rehearsal or gigging system.
Pedalboards
Overdrive, compression, octave, chorus, preamp and other bass pedals can all be used before the PBM-200 in a conventional signal chain.
DI and Recording Equipment
The PBM-200 can form part of a compact recording setup alongside an audio interface or mixer.
Headphones
A good pair of closed-back headphones creates a particularly convenient silent-practice setup.

Can the Ashdown PBM-200 be used for gigs?
Yes.
It is particularly well suited to smaller gigs and performances where the amplifier's DI output can also feed the venue PA.
For very loud stages without PA support, you may prefer a more powerful amplifier with additional clean headroom.
What is the minimum speaker impedance for the PBM-200?
The minimum speaker load is 4 ohms.
Do not connect cabinets in a configuration that results in a total load below 4 ohms.

Yes.
With an 8-ohm load, the PBM-200 produces 140 watts RMS.
Can I use a 4-ohm cabinet?
Yes.
A 4-ohm speaker load allows the PBM-200 to produce its maximum rated 196 watts RMS output.
Does the PBM-200 have a DI output?
Yes.
The DI output makes it easy to integrate the amplifier with a PA system or recording setup.
This is particularly useful at gigs where your cabinet provides personal stage monitoring while the venue PA handles the main bass sound.
Can I practise through headphones?

That depends heavily on the drummer, speaker cabinet and overall rehearsal volume.
With an efficient cabinet, the PBM-200 can provide plenty of usable output for many rehearsal situations.
For extremely loud rock or metal rehearsals where there is no PA reinforcement, a higher-powered bass amplifier may provide greater clean headroom.
What bass cabinet should I use with the PBM-200?
Choose a dedicated bass cabinet with a total impedance of 4 ohms or higher and sufficient power handling for your intended use.
A compact 1x10 or 1x12 can make a very portable system, while larger or more efficient cabinets can provide additional projection.
Is the PBM-200 suitable as a backup bass amp?
Very much so.
Its extremely compact dimensions make this one of its strongest uses.
A bassist using a larger main amplifier can keep the PBM-200 close at hand without having to transport another conventional-sized head.
Ashdown UK-PBM-200 – Fair Deal Music Recommendation
