Why Choose The Blackstar ID:X 100?
100W Of Stage-Ready Power
The ID:X 100 delivers enough output for rehearsals and live performance through its custom 12-inch Anthem 100 speaker, while built-in power reduction means you do not need a second amp when you get home.
Six Straightforward Amp Voices
Rather than presenting you with hundreds of near-identical models, Blackstar provides six immediately accessible Voices: Clean Warm, Clean Bright, Crunch, Super Crunch, OD1 and OD2. They cover the essential journey from clear cleans to modern high gain without making basic tone selection complicated.
More Than 35 Built-In Effects
Overdrive, distortion, modulation, delay and reverb effects are built into the amp, with deeper adjustment available directly from the front panel and OLED display.
Proper Live-Rig Connectivity
MIDI, an effects loop, balanced XLR output, USB-C and optional footcontroller support make the ID:X 100 far easier to integrate into a serious stage or recording rig than a basic practice modeller.
Full Power At Home Or On Stage
Switch between 100W, 10W and 1W operation depending on the environment. You can rehearse or gig at full power, reduce the output for smaller rooms, or drop to 1W for quieter home playing.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
Blackstar ID:X 100 vs Blackstar ID:X 50
Both models share the core ID:X modelling platform, six Voices, built-in effects, CabRig and power-stage Response options.
The ID:X 100 steps up to a 100W power section, Anthem 100 speaker, balanced XLR output and MIDI connectivity. It is also physically larger and heavier at 14.3kg.
Choose the ID:X 50 for a lighter home, studio and small-gig solution. Choose the ID:X 100 if you regularly play with a band, require more stage headroom or need MIDI and balanced direct-output functionality.
Blackstar ID:X 100 vs BOSS Katana-100 Gen 3
The BOSS Katana-100 Gen 3 is another 100W 1x12 modelling combo, offering six amp characters with variations, five effects sections, eight Tone Setting memories and BOSS Tone Studio integration.
The Blackstar takes a slightly different approach with EL84, EL34 and 6L6 power-stage Responses, ISF tone shaping, CabRig and an OLED-assisted effects interface. Both are strong stage-ready modelling platforms; the choice comes down to which modelling architecture and control workflow suits you best.
Blackstar ID:X 100 vs Fender Mustang LTX100
The Fender Mustang LTX100 combines 100 watts with a 12-inch Celestion speaker and a broad digital modelling environment.
The ID:X 100 is particularly attractive to players who prefer an interface that still feels closely related to a conventional guitar amplifier. Its six core Voices, physical three-band EQ, ISF and selectable valve Response settings make fundamental tone shaping quick without requiring software editing.
Blackstar ID:X 100 vs Line 6 Catalyst CX 100
The Line 6 Catalyst CX 100 offers a 100W 1x12 format with 12 Helix-derived amp Voicings and a broad collection of effects.
The Blackstar offers fewer primary amp Voices but counters with its three selectable valve Responses, CabRig system, MIDI connectivity and distinct Blackstar control philosophy. The Catalyst suits players already comfortable with Line 6's modelling ecosystem, while the ID:X makes a strong case for guitarists who want digital flexibility presented through a more traditional amp-style workflow.
Who Is The Blackstar ID:X 100 For?
The ID:X 100 is particularly well suited to:
-
Gigging guitarists needing a powerful 1x12 combo
-
Players who want one amp for home, rehearsal and stage use
-
Cover-band musicians requiring several different guitar sounds
-
Guitarists moving from valve amps into modelling
-
Players who prefer physical controls over deep menu navigation
-
Musicians who use external effects pedals
-
Guitarists incorporating MIDI control into a live rig
-
Home recording players
-
Musicians who want direct XLR output for front of house
-
Players requiring lower-power options for home use
It is especially appealing if you want modelling flexibility but still expect an amplifier to behave like something you can walk up to, turn a few controls on and start playing.
Suitable Genres & Playing Styles
The six Voices cover a broad range of guitar styles.
Clean Warm and Clean Bright provide the foundation for pop, funk, country, indie, blues and pedal-based setups.
Crunch and Super Crunch move naturally into blues-rock, alternative, classic rock and heavier rhythm tones.
OD1 and OD2 provide the additional saturation required for hard rock and modern high-gain playing.
The onboard effects and tone controls then allow each core sound to be developed further without needing a separate pedalboard.
What Makes The ID:X Different From A Traditional Modelling Amp?
The biggest difference is how Blackstar presents the digital technology to the player.
Instead of placing a huge library of amp models behind menus, the ID:X starts with six broad amplifier Voices and gives you familiar physical controls for Gain, Volume, Bass, Middle, Treble, ISF, Presence and Resonance.
The digital technology becomes more obvious when you want it — through effects editing, CabRig, preset storage, USB recording and Architect software — rather than getting between you and the basic act of adjusting an amplifier.
EL84, EL34 & 6L6 Power Responses Explained
The Response control allows you to change the character of the virtual power stage independently from the selected Voice.
EL84
Typically associated with a lively, compressed response and plenty of upper-mid character. A strong choice for chiming cleans, indie tones and classic crunch.
EL34
Provides the sort of midrange character commonly associated with classic British rock amplifiers.
6L6
Offers a different feel with strong lows, clarity and headroom, making it useful for clean sounds and heavier modern tones.
These settings do more than simply change EQ. Their purpose is to alter the response and feel of the virtual power section as you play.
Blackstar ISF Tone Shaping
Blackstar's patented ISF – Infinite Shape Feature – control works alongside the conventional Bass, Middle and Treble controls.
Moving ISF towards one end gives the EQ response a tighter, more American-influenced character, while moving towards the other produces a warmer British-style midrange response.
Combined with the three power Responses, this gives you several ways to change the character of an amp Voice without simply selecting another preset.
35+ Built-In Effects
The ID:X 100 includes more than 35 effects covering the main processing categories guitarists commonly use.
These include:
-
Overdrive and distortion
-
Modulation
-
Delay
-
Reverb
Effects can be adjusted directly from the amplifier, with the OLED screen giving visual feedback for deeper editing.
This makes it possible to build complete performance-ready sounds without immediately connecting a computer or external effects pedalboard.
OLED Display & Hands-On Editing
The integrated OLED display is designed to support the physical controls rather than replace them.
It provides visual feedback when selecting and editing effects, navigating patches or using additional digital functions.
That is particularly useful on stage because deeper settings remain visible without requiring a phone or laptop next to the amplifier.
CabRig Speaker Simulation
Blackstar's CabRig technology provides IR-based speaker cabinet simulation for direct recording and live output.
Instead of simply taking the raw preamp signal from the amp, CabRig creates a more complete guitar sound by recreating the behaviour of a miked speaker cabinet.
This makes the ID:X 100 practical for:
-
Direct recording
-
Front-of-house feeds
-
Silent practice
-
USB recording
-
Consistent live sound
-
Home production
CabRig settings can be edited further using Blackstar Architect software.
Balanced XLR Direct Output
The ID:X 100 includes a balanced XLR D.I. output, an important advantage over the smaller ID:X 50.
For live use, this gives you a straightforward way to send the CabRig-processed guitar sound directly to a mixing desk while still using the amp's own 12-inch speaker for stage sound.
This can reduce the need to place a microphone in front of the combo and makes consistent venue-to-venue routing much easier.
Effects Loop
A dedicated effects loop lets you integrate external pedals and processors at a suitable point within the amplifier signal path.
This is especially useful for delay, reverb, modulation and rack effects that you prefer to place after the amplifier's main preamp section.
For players moving from a traditional amp and pedalboard setup, the effects loop makes it much easier to keep favourite existing pedals while taking advantage of the ID:X modelling platform.
MIDI In & Thru
The ID:X 100 adds MIDI In and MIDI Thru, allowing it to become part of more sophisticated live-control systems.
Compatible MIDI equipment can therefore be used alongside the amplifier for preset switching and broader rig integration.
This makes the 100 particularly appealing to players whose live setup extends beyond a conventional footswitch.
Patches & Footswitch Control
Up to 12 patches can be stored and recalled directly from the amplifier, while up to 99 patches can be accessed through Blackstar Architect software or a compatible footcontroller setup.
The ID:X 100 works with Blackstar's optional FS-12 and FS-18 footcontrollers.
Adding a compatible footcontroller transforms the amp into a much more practical live rig by allowing hands-free patch and function control.
USB-C Recording
USB-C connectivity lets the ID:X 100 integrate directly with a compatible computer recording setup.
This gives home players and songwriters a convenient way to capture guitar without setting up a microphone in front of the speaker.
When used alongside CabRig and Architect, the amp becomes both a physical 100W guitar combo and a practical direct-recording platform.
Architect Software
Blackstar's Architect software provides deeper editing and patch management from a computer.
It allows you to:
-
Edit stored sounds
-
Explore effects settings
-
Configure CabRig
-
Organise patches
-
Access additional tone-management functions
-
Work with Blackstar's patch community
The important point is that Architect is optional for everyday operation. You can still access the main amplifier and effects controls directly from the ID:X itself.
Power Reduction: 100W, 10W & 1W
One of the most useful features of the ID:X 100 is that its stage-ready output does not make it impractical at home.
Select:
100W for maximum performance and rehearsal output.
10W when you want reduced room volume while retaining a physical 12-inch speaker experience.
1W for quieter home practice.
This makes the ID:X 100 a particularly practical option for players who would rather own one capable amplifier than separate home and live combos.
Story & Context
Blackstar introduced the ID:X Series in July 2025 as a new generation of DSP modelling amplifiers, building on experience gained through earlier Blackstar digital platforms including ID:Series and Silverline.
The design philosophy focused on combining modern modelling flexibility with the sort of immediate front-panel control guitarists expect from a conventional amplifier.
Blackstar launched the series in 50W and 100W 1x12 formats, allowing players to choose between a lighter general-purpose model and a more comprehensively equipped stage version.
The ID:X 100 is the flagship of the original combo pair, adding the extra connectivity required by gigging musicians, including MIDI and balanced XLR output alongside its more powerful Anthem 100 speaker system.

Fair Deal Music Verdict 🎵
★★★★★ 5/5
The Blackstar ID:X 100 is a very strong option for guitarists who want modern modelling technology without giving up the familiar experience of operating a proper guitar combo.
Its standout feature is the way it combines a powerful 100W 1x12 stage amp with genuinely useful digital functionality. You can build sounds directly from the front panel, integrate pedals through the effects loop, control a larger rig over MIDI, record over USB-C or send a CabRig-equipped XLR feed straight to front of house.
The selectable 100W, 10W and 1W power levels also make it far more practical as an everyday amplifier than the headline 100W rating might suggest.
Best suited for: Gigging guitarists, serious home players and musicians wanting one modelling combo for practice, rehearsal, recording and stage use.
Customers usually upgrade from: Smaller modelling combos, entry-level practice amps or analogue combos that lack built-in effects and direct-recording connectivity.
Most commonly paired with: Blackstar FS-12 footcontrollers, pedalboards, XLR cables and USB recording setups.
Our tip: Start by finding the Voice and power Response combination you prefer before adding effects. A strong core amp sound makes it much easier to build patches that translate between home, rehearsal and stage use.
Showroom feedback: The ID:X 100 makes most sense for the player who needs genuine gigging output but still wants the convenience of a modern modelling amplifier. MIDI, XLR and the effects loop are significant reasons to choose it over the smaller ID:X 50.
