Boss SDE-3 Dual Digital Delay Effects Pedal, (Used)
Pairs well with
Description
The Boss SDE-3 Dual Digital Delay brings the distinctive character of the classic Roland SDE-3000 rackmount delay into the familiar Boss compact-pedal format.
Designed for everything from clean digital repeats and subtle ambience through to modulated echoes, stereo textures and complex dual-delay patterns, the SDE-3 combines a straightforward control layout with considerably deeper functionality than a conventional compact delay.
Its defining Offset control introduces a secondary delay line relative to the main delay time, allowing the pedal to create everything from subtle thickening to spacious rhythmic repeats and wide stereo effects.
This Pre-Owned example is in Very Good condition.
No power supply is included.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
The SDE-3 manages to feel both vintage and modern at the same time.
Its core delay character takes inspiration from an iconic 1980s rack unit, but the pedal format adds much easier integration into a modern guitar rig.
The standout feature is the Offset control, which allows the secondary delay line to interact with the main delay time and create patterns that a simple single-delay pedal cannot reproduce.
DETAILED FEATURES & BENEFITS
Roland SDE-3000-Inspired Character
The SDE-3 is designed around the tonal character and modulation behaviour of the legendary Roland SDE-3000 digital delay.
Rather than aiming for ultra-clean modern repeats alone, it retains a slightly softened and musical vintage-digital character.
Time Control
The TIME control determines the primary delay time.
The pedal can provide up to approximately 800ms of delay in normal mono or stereo operation.
In mono operation, the maximum delay can be extended to approximately 1600ms.
Feedback Control
The FEEDBACK control determines how many repeats are generated.
Lower settings provide one or two echoes, while higher settings produce longer repeating trails and can move towards self-oscillation.
Level Control
The LEVEL control adjusts the volume of the delayed signal relative to the dry sound.
This allows everything from subtle background ambience through to prominent rhythmic delay.
OFFSET CONTROL
The OFFSET control is one of the SDE-3’s defining features.
It introduces a secondary delay line relative to the main delay time.
Small Offset settings can create thickening and doubling-style effects.
Larger settings can generate more obvious dual-delay rhythms and complex repeat patterns.
This makes the SDE-3 especially useful for:
-
Stereo guitar rigs
-
Rhythmic delay
-
Ambient textures
-
Multi-tap-style sounds
-
Spacious lead tones
MODULATION
The SDE-3 includes independent RATE and DEPTH controls for modulation.
This allows movement to be added to the delayed signal.
Subtle settings can soften and widen the repeats, while more extreme settings create pronounced pitch movement and chorus-like delay textures.
HI CUT CONTROL
The HI CUT control reduces high-frequency content in the repeats.
This makes it possible to soften the delay and place it further behind the dry guitar signal.
It is particularly useful when creating warmer vintage-style echoes.
STEREO OPERATION
The SDE-3 provides stereo inputs and outputs.
It can be configured for multiple stereo behaviours, including:
-
Panning delay
-
Discrete stereo delay
-
Wet / dry routing
-
Stereo wet effects
This makes it especially useful for dual-amplifier and recording setups.
CARRYOVER FUNCTION
The dedicated CARRYOVER switch determines whether delay trails continue after the effect is bypassed.
With Carryover engaged, repeats can decay naturally rather than stopping abruptly.
This is particularly useful for ambient and spacious playing.
EXTERNAL CONTROL
The SDE-3 includes a CTL/EXP input for compatible external Boss footswitches and expression pedals.
External control can provide:
-
Tap tempo
-
Hold functionality
-
Real-time parameter control
An expression pedal can be assigned to parameters such as delay level, feedback and time.
HOLD / LOOPING FUNCTION
With a compatible external footswitch, the SDE-3 supports a Hold function for capturing and repeating short phrases.
This can be used for:
-
Drones
-
Repeating textures
-
Experimental sound design
-
Short looping applications
MIDI INPUT
A mini TRS MIDI input allows the SDE-3 to integrate with compatible MIDI control systems.
This makes it useful for more advanced pedalboards and synchronised setups.

HOW IT COMPARES
SDE-3 vs Basic Digital Delay
A basic delay typically provides Time, Feedback and Level.
The SDE-3 adds modulation, Hi Cut, Offset dual-delay processing, stereo operation, external control and MIDI.
SDE-3 vs Analogue Delay
An analogue delay tends to produce darker repeats that degrade progressively.
The SDE-3 provides greater clarity, longer delay times and significantly more control while retaining a vintage-inspired digital character.
SDE-3 vs Roland SDE-3000
The original SDE-3000 is a large rackmount processor.
The SDE-3 condenses its core tonal character and modulation approach into a compact pedal while adding modern pedalboard functionality.

FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★
Best suited for: Players wanting vintage-inspired digital delay with modern stereo, modulation and dual-delay flexibility.
Customers usually upgrade from: Basic Boss digital delays, simple three-knob delays and compact analogue-style echo pedals.
Most commonly paired with: Reverb, modulation, overdrive, stereo amplifiers and modern pedalboard control systems.
Our tip: Start with the Offset control close to minimum and get the basic delay sound right first. Then increase Offset gradually — small changes can turn a conventional delay into a much wider and more complex rhythmic effect.
Showroom feedback: The SDE-3 stands out because it offers much more than standard Boss compact-delay functionality without becoming difficult to operate. The Offset control is particularly useful for creating wide, layered delay sounds from a very small footprint.
