Description

The Catalinbread Topanga Burnside is a distinctive spring-reverb and tremolo pedal designed around the splashy, surf-inspired character of classic outboard reverb units.

Based on Catalinbread’s Topanga reverb platform, the Burnside takes inspiration from the legendary Fender 6G15 outboard spring reverb unit, then adds an integrated tremolo circuit for even more movement and vintage character.

The tremolo is positioned between cascading reverb stages, giving the modulation a smoother, more blended response than a conventional tremolo placed completely before or after reverb.

With dedicated Dwell, Tone, Mix, Volume and Trem controls, the Topanga Burnside can move from subtle ambience and gentle pulse through to deep surf-style splash and pronounced rhythmic modulation.

This Pre-Owned example is in Very Good condition.

No power supply is included.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT

The Topanga Burnside is much more than a standard spring-reverb pedal.

Its core reverb voice is designed to capture the aggressive, splashy and slightly driven character of a classic outboard spring unit, while the added tremolo introduces rhythmic movement without making the effect feel overly choppy.

The result is particularly well suited to surf, garage rock, skate punk, spaghetti-western textures and vintage-inspired clean guitar sounds.

DETAILED FEATURES & BENEFITS

Dwell Control

The Dwell control determines how hard the virtual spring-reverb circuit is driven.

At lower settings, the reverb remains softer and more restrained.

At higher settings, it becomes more intense, splashy and saturated, recreating the exaggerated character associated with heavily driven outboard spring units.

Tone Control

The Tone control acts on the reverb signal.

Higher settings retain more brightness and splash, while lower settings soften the top end for a warmer and more subdued ambience.

Mix Control

The Mix control determines the balance between dry and effected signal.

Fully anticlockwise provides dry signal only.

Fully clockwise provides a fully wet reverb signal.

This makes the Burnside useful for both conventional guitar rigs and more experimental wet-only setups.

Volume Control

The Volume control adjusts the overall output level.

It also interacts with the pedal’s discrete preamp section, allowing the Burnside to provide additional clean boost when required.

BUILT-IN TREMOLO

The defining addition on the Burnside is its Trem control.

This adjusts the speed of the built-in tremolo effect.

The tremolo rate ranges from approximately:

1.9Hz to 9Hz

Turning the Trem control fully down removes the tremolo effect from the signal path.

TREMOLO BETWEEN REVERB STAGES

Rather than simply placing tremolo before or after the reverb, Catalinbread positions the modulation between cascading reverb stages.

This gives the Burnside a distinctive response where the tremolo and reverb interact naturally.

The effect remains rhythmic without becoming excessively abrupt, while the reverb stays spacious without completely washing out the pulse.

VINTAGE OUTBOARD REVERB CHARACTER

The Topanga platform is inspired by the Fender 6G15 outboard reverb unit.

Unlike many built-in amplifier reverbs, the original outboard units were typically placed before the amplifier input.

This allowed the reverberated signal to hit the amplifier’s gain stages, creating a more aggressive, splashy and harmonically complex response.

The Burnside is designed to reproduce that style of interaction in pedal form.

HOW IT COMPARES

Topanga Burnside vs Standard Topanga

The standard Topanga focuses purely on spring-reverb emulation.

The Burnside adds an integrated tremolo stage, giving it significantly more rhythmic and textural flexibility.

Burnside vs Separate Reverb & Tremolo Pedals

Using two separate pedals gives independent placement and switching.

The Burnside instead integrates the two effects in a carefully designed internal signal path, creating a more cohesive interaction between tremolo and reverb.

Burnside vs Amp Reverb

Many amplifier reverbs sit later in the signal path.

The Topanga architecture is inspired by an outboard spring unit placed before the amplifier, which produces a more aggressive and characterful response.

FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Players wanting authentic surf-style spring reverb with built-in tremolo and a more characterful response than a conventional digital reverb.

Customers usually upgrade from: Basic spring-reverb pedals, amplifier reverb and simple tremolo effects.

Most commonly paired with: Clean valve amplifiers, fuzz, overdrive, slapback delay and vintage-style guitars.

Our tip: Start with moderate Dwell and Mix settings, then add Trem slowly. The strength of the Burnside is the way the tremolo interacts with the reverb, so subtle settings can be just as effective as more extreme surf tones.

Showroom feedback: The Burnside has a very distinctive personality. It can do classic splashy surf reverb easily, but the tremolo makes it much more useful for rhythmic and atmospheric parts than the standard Topanga alone.
