Description

The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberation Machine is an experimental reverb pedal designed for everything from spacious ambience to cavernous echoes, scattered rhythmic delays and self-oscillating soundscapes.

Rather than producing a conventional room, hall or plate reverb, the Afterneath creates its sound from a swarm of short digital delays. Controls for Length, Diffuse, Dampen, Drag, Reflect and Mix let you reshape those reflections from smooth ambient washes to sharp, stuttering textures.

V3 adds nine different Drag modes plus expression pedal and CV control, making it an exceptional choice for ambient, shoegaze, post-rock, experimental music, sound design and synthesiser processing.

What Makes The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 Special?

The Afterneath approaches reverb differently from a traditional ambience pedal.

Its sound is built from multiple short digital delays. Bring those delays closer together and the result becomes a dense, cavernous reverb. Pull them apart and you begin to hear individual reflections, turning the effect into a scattered rhythmic delay.

The Drag control is central to this behaviour, and V3 gives it nine operating modes ranging from smooth unquantised movement to musically quantised scales, octaves and fifths.

Seven Powerful Controls

Length

Controls the decay length of the reverb.

Shorter settings create tighter ambience, while higher settings produce longer and more expansive reverb tails.

Diffuse

Controls how closely the individual reflections blend together.

Turn anticlockwise for sharper, more obvious early reflections and stuttering textures. Turn clockwise for a smoother, more washed-out ambient reverb.

Dampen

Shapes the high-frequency response of the reverb.

Lower settings are brighter, while higher settings soften the top end for darker and mellower ambience.

Drag

Changes the spacing between the individual delay lines.

Clockwise settings pull the reflections closer together for a more conventional reverb effect. Anticlockwise settings separate them into scattered rhythmic echoes.

Reflect

Controls regeneration and feedback.

Increase Reflect for longer washes and echoes. Higher settings can push the Afterneath into self-oscillation.

Mix

Controls the balance between the dry and processed signals.

The Afterneath does not become completely wet, but higher Mix settings reduce the dry signal and create the impression of an increasingly effect-heavy sound.

Nine Drag Modes

The V3 Mode control changes the behaviour of the Drag parameter:

  1. Unquantized – Smooth continuous Drag response
  2. Unquantized with Slew – Adds a musical lag similar to manipulating tape speed
  3. Unquantized Volt/Octave – Scaled for 1V/octave-style melodic control
  4. Chromatic Scale – Quantised chromatic movement
  5. Minor Scale – Quantised to a minor scale
  6. Major Scale / Lydian – Quantised major/Lydian movement
  7. Pentatonic Scale – Quantised pentatonic movement
  8. Octaves & Fifths – Restricts movement to octaves and fifths
  9. Octaves – Restricts movement to octave intervals

These modes become particularly powerful when using an expression pedal or external CV control.

Expression & CV Control

The EXP input allows the Drag control to be manipulated in real time.

EarthQuaker Devices recommends a 50k expression pedal for access to the full range, although standard 10k expression pedals can also operate the parameter with a reduced range.

The input also accepts 0–5V control voltage, making the Afterneath V3 suitable for integration with compatible modular and experimental setups.

Who Is It For?

The Afterneath V3 is ideal for players who want reverb to become a creative part of the instrument rather than simply adding background ambience.

It is particularly suited to:

  • Ambient guitar
  • Shoegaze
  • Post-rock
  • Experimental music
  • Psychedelic music
  • Indie and alternative
  • Drone
  • Soundtrack work
  • Studio sound design
  • Synthesiser processing
  • CV-controlled setups
  • Players creating self-oscillating textures

Why Choose An Experimental Reverb Pedal?

A conventional reverb pedal generally recreates familiar acoustic spaces such as rooms, halls, springs or plates.

The Afterneath is different.

Its network of short delay lines can move between recognisable reverb and distinctly delay-like behaviour, while Drag, Reflect and the nine operating modes allow the effect to become rhythmic, pitch-like and highly interactive.

That makes it particularly useful for musicians who already own a conventional reverb and want something capable of producing less predictable sounds.

How It Compares

Afterneath V3 vs Traditional Reverb

A standard reverb is usually designed to recreate realistic acoustic spaces.

The Afterneath is more experimental, allowing the individual reflections to separate into rhythmic delays and react dramatically to the Drag and Reflect controls.

Afterneath V3 vs EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master

The Dispatch Master combines straightforward delay and reverb in an easy-to-use format.

The Afterneath V3 focuses much more heavily on unusual reverb textures, reflection spacing, self-oscillation and expression/CV manipulation.

Afterneath V3 vs EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2

The Avalanche Run V2 combines stereo delay and reverb with tap tempo, Reverse and Swell modes.

The Afterneath is more specialised and unconventional, particularly when using its nine Drag modes for quantised pitch-like movement and scattered delay effects.

FAQs

What does the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 do?

It creates reverb from a network of short digital delays, allowing it to move between smooth ambient reverb, scattered rhythmic echoes and experimental self-oscillating textures.

How many modes does the Afterneath V3 have?

It has nine Drag modes, including unquantised, chromatic, minor, major/Lydian, pentatonic, octaves and fifths, and octave-only settings.

Is the Afterneath a normal reverb pedal?

It can produce conventional ambient reverb sounds, but its main strength is creating unusual and experimental textures that blur the line between reverb and delay.

What does the Drag control do?

Drag changes the spacing between the individual delay lines. Clockwise settings create denser reverb, while anticlockwise settings separate the delays into more rhythmic reflections.

Can the Afterneath self-oscillate?

Yes. Increasing the Reflect control can push the feedback network into self-oscillation.

Can I use an expression pedal?

Yes. The EXP input allows an expression pedal to control Drag.

What expression pedal value is recommended?

EarthQuaker Devices recommends a 50k expression pedal for access to the full control range.

Does it accept CV?

Yes. The expression input accepts 0–5V CV, making the Afterneath suitable for compatible modular and experimental setups.

Can the Afterneath create pitch-like effects?

Yes. Several Drag modes quantise movement to chromatic, minor, major/Lydian, pentatonic, octave and fifth intervals.

Is it good for ambient guitar?

Yes. Ambient, shoegaze and post-rock are among its strongest applications thanks to its long, evolving and highly adjustable reverb textures.

Can it be used with synthesisers?

Yes. Its unusual delay and reverb processing works particularly well with synthesiser and sound-design sources.

Is the Afterneath V3 true bypass?

No. The Afterneath V3 uses electronic buffered bypass, with the buffer remaining active in the signal path.

What is Flexi-Switch®?

Flexi-Switch allows the effect to operate in either standard latching mode or temporary momentary mode.

How much power does it require?

It requires 9V DC centre-negative power and draws approximately 100mA.

Is a power supply included?

No. A compatible power supply is not included.
