Description

The EarthQuaker Devices Aurelius Tri-Voice Chorus is a flexible digital modulation pedal offering three distinct voices: Vibrato, Chorus and Rotary.

Inspired by classic 1970s chorus sounds, Aurelius combines warm vintage-style modulation with modern control, including six user presets, assignable expression control and CV compatibility. Width, Rate and Balance controls make it easy to move from subtle movement and lush chorus to pitch vibrato, flanging textures and rotary-style modulation.

It is an excellent choice for indie, alternative, shoegaze, ambient, psychedelic, pop, funk and experimental guitar, while also working well with bass, keyboards and synthesisers.

What Makes The EarthQuaker Devices Aurelius Special?

The Aurelius combines three different modulation styles in one compact pedal, giving you much more than a conventional chorus.

Its Vibrato mode covers traditional chorus and full pitch vibrato, Chorus mode blends chorus and flanging textures, while Rotary mode recreates the movement of a rotating speaker-style effect.

Six preset slots make it easy to save favourite sounds, while expression control lets you manipulate Width, Rate or Balance in real time.

Three Modulation Modes

Vibrato Mode

Vibrato mode uses a triangle-wave LFO to modulate a short delay line.

At lower Balance settings, it works as a traditional chorus. Turn Balance fully clockwise and the dry signal is removed, creating a full pitch-vibrato effect.

This mode is ideal for:

  • Classic chorus
  • Wobbly vibrato
  • Lo-fi textures
  • Indie guitar
  • Psychedelic modulation

Chorus Mode

Chorus mode blends chorus and flanger-style modulation using a sine-wave LFO.

Lower Width settings create warmer chorus sounds, while higher settings introduce more obvious flanging and feedback.

This mode works particularly well for:

  • Clean guitar
  • Shoegaze
  • Alternative
  • Dreamy rhythm parts
  • Wide modulation textures

Rotary Mode

Rotary mode recreates the character of a rotating speaker cabinet using both amplitude and frequency modulation.

Lower Width settings emphasise the lower-frequency “woofer” movement, while higher settings bring out the upper-frequency “horn” character.

It is a strong choice for:

  • Psychedelic guitar
  • Funk
  • Soul
  • Organ-style textures
  • Experimental modulation

Six User Presets

Aurelius offers six preset slots for storing favourite modulation sounds.

Each preset can save:

  • Width
  • Rate
  • Balance
  • Selected mode
  • Expression assignment

This makes the pedal especially practical for live players who need several different modulation sounds during the same set.

Aurelius can operate in Live Mode for direct knob control or Preset Mode for recalling stored sounds.

Assignable Expression Control

A compatible TRS expression pedal can be assigned to:

  • Width
  • Rate
  • Balance

This makes it possible to alter modulation depth, speed or effect mix while playing.

Different expression assignments can also be saved within individual presets.

CV Control

The expression input also accepts 0–3.3V control voltage, allowing Aurelius to integrate with compatible CV-based setups.

This makes it particularly interesting for experimental musicians, synthesisers and studio sound-design applications.

Simple Three-Knob Control

Width

Controls the depth of the modulation.

Its exact behaviour changes depending on the selected mode, ranging from subtle chorus width to pronounced flanging or rotary movement.

Rate

Controls the speed of the modulation.

Lower settings create slow, sweeping movement, while higher settings produce faster and more obvious modulation.

Balance

Controls the relationship between the dry and processed signals.

In Vibrato mode, turning Balance fully clockwise removes the dry signal for full pitch vibrato.

Who Is It For?

The EarthQuaker Devices Aurelius is ideal for players who want more flexibility than a traditional single-mode chorus pedal.

It is particularly well suited to:

  • Indie
  • Alternative
  • Shoegaze
  • Ambient
  • Psychedelic music
  • Funk
  • Pop
  • Post-rock
  • Experimental guitar
  • Bass
  • Keyboards
  • Synthesiser processing
  • Studio sound design

Why Choose A Multi-Mode Chorus Pedal?

A conventional chorus usually gives you one core modulation character.

The Aurelius offers three distinct approaches in one pedal, allowing you to move between traditional chorus, vibrato, flanger-style textures and rotary modulation.

Presets and expression control also make it much easier to use several different modulation sounds during a performance without adding multiple pedals to your board.

How It Compares

Aurelius vs Traditional Chorus Pedal

A standard chorus usually offers one modulation voice.

Aurelius adds Vibrato, Chorus and Rotary modes, along with presets and expression control, making it considerably more flexible.

Aurelius vs EarthQuaker Devices Sea Machine

The Sea Machine focuses on deep, highly adjustable chorus sounds with a more experimental character.

Aurelius is better suited to players who want multiple modulation styles, preset recall and live expression control.

Aurelius vs Dedicated Rotary Pedal

A dedicated rotary pedal may offer more specialised speaker-simulation controls.

Aurelius gives you rotary-style modulation alongside chorus and vibrato in one compact unit, making it the more versatile choice for mixed modulation needs.
