Description

The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof V2 is a Germanium/Silicon hybrid fuzz pedal designed to deliver thick saturation, smooth sustain and powerful low-end weight while retaining enough clarity to cut through a full band mix.

Loosely inspired by the classic green Russian-style fuzz circuit, the Hoof combines hand-matched NOS Germanium transistors with Silicon components for a balance of vintage-style warmth and dependable modern consistency. Its dedicated Shift control lets you shape the midrange response, moving from scooped, heavy fuzz to more focused mid-forward tones.

Capable of everything from gritty lower-gain drive to huge sustaining fuzz, the Hoof V2 is ideal for rock, stoner, doom, alternative, grunge, psychedelic, indie and heavy guitar or bass tones.

What Makes The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof V2 Special?

The Hoof takes the huge, sustaining character associated with classic Russian-style fuzz and makes it more adaptable for modern players.

Its hybrid Germanium/Silicon design provides a smooth, harmonically rich fuzz sound while avoiding some of the inconsistency and temperature sensitivity associated with purely vintage Germanium circuits.

EarthQuaker Devices also hand-matches the NOS Germanium transistors, helping each Hoof maintain a consistent response from pedal to pedal.

The result is thick and powerful without becoming excessively muddy, making it useful for both massive rhythm guitar and sustaining lead tones.

Powerful Midrange Control

One of the Hoof's most useful features is its Shift control.

Rather than giving you only a conventional Tone knob, Shift changes the frequency response of the tone circuit and allows much greater control over the mids.

Turn Shift Clockwise

Creates a more scooped midrange, emphasising the heavy low end and top-end bite associated with classic big fuzz sounds.

This works particularly well for:

  • Doom
  • Stoner rock
  • Heavy riffs
  • Large power chords
  • Bass-heavy fuzz textures

Turn Shift Anticlockwise

Brings the midrange forward, helping the fuzz cut more easily through a full band mix.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Lead guitar
  • Alternative rock
  • Grunge
  • Live performance
  • Dense arrangements

Simple Four-Knob Control

Level

Controls the overall output volume.

The Hoof has plenty of available output, allowing you to match unity volume or hit the front end of an amplifier harder.

Fuzz

Adjusts the amount of saturation and sustain.

Lower settings move towards gritty overdrive and restrained fuzz, while higher settings create thick, compressed and sustaining distortion.

Tone

Balances the darker and brighter frequencies of the fuzz.

Turn left for a fuller, bass-heavy sound or right for additional treble and definition.

Shift

Adjusts the midrange character of the Tone circuit, moving between scooped and mid-forward responses.

Who Is It For?

The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof V2 is ideal for players who want a thick Muff-style fuzz that remains clear and controllable in a band mix.

It is particularly well suited to:

  • Rock
  • Stoner rock
  • Doom
  • Grunge
  • Alternative
  • Psychedelic rock
  • Indie
  • Garage rock
  • Heavy rhythm guitar
  • Sustaining lead guitar
  • Bass guitar
  • Players who need adjustable midrange from a fuzz pedal

Why Choose A Germanium/Silicon Hybrid Fuzz?

Germanium and Silicon transistors each have their own characteristics.

Germanium is often associated with smoothness, warmth and organic harmonic saturation, while Silicon offers greater stability, definition and consistency.

The Hoof combines both approaches.

This hybrid construction gives the pedal much of the musical sustain and character associated with vintage fuzz while retaining the reliability expected from a modern pedalboard effect.

Hoof V2 With Guitar

The Hoof works particularly well with both single-coil and humbucking pickups.

Single coils can bring out additional clarity and attack, while humbuckers push the circuit harder for thicker sustain and heavier saturation.

The adjustable Shift control also makes it easier to fit the pedal around different guitars and amplifiers without losing definition.

Hoof V2 With Bass

The Hoof is also a popular option for bass guitar.

Its substantial low-frequency response helps retain the weight of the instrument, while the Shift control lets you bring back midrange definition when using heavy fuzz settings.

This makes it particularly useful for:

  • Stoner bass
  • Doom
  • Alternative
  • Heavy rock
  • Psychedelic bass
  • Sustaining fuzz bass

How It Compares

Hoof V2 vs Traditional Russian-Style Fuzz

Traditional Russian-style fuzz circuits are known for thick lows, smooth sustain and a distinctive heavy character.

The Hoof takes that general foundation but adds the Shift control, giving you substantially more control over the midrange and making it easier to fit into different rigs.

Hoof V2 vs EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas

The Hizumitas delivers an especially large low end with aggressive saturation and long sustain.

The Hoof is more adjustable through its Tone and Shift controls, making it particularly useful for players who want to change the amount of midrange present in their fuzz tone.

Hoof V2 vs Conventional Distortion

A standard distortion pedal generally produces a tighter and more controlled gain structure.

The Hoof produces much thicker saturation, compression and sustain, making it better suited to players looking for a broad wall of fuzz rather than conventional amp-style distortion.

FAQs

What type of fuzz is the EarthQuaker Devices Hoof V2?

The Hoof V2 is a hybrid Germanium/Silicon fuzz loosely inspired by the classic green Russian-style fuzz circuit.

Does the Hoof use Germanium transistors?

Yes. EarthQuaker Devices uses hand-matched NOS Germanium transistors alongside Silicon components.

What does the Shift control do?

Shift changes the midrange response of the Tone circuit. Turning it clockwise scoops the mids, while turning it anticlockwise brings the mids forward.

Can the Hoof produce scooped fuzz tones?

Yes. Higher Shift settings can produce a more pronounced mid scoop for large, heavy fuzz sounds.

Can it produce more mid-focused tones?

Yes. Turning Shift anticlockwise increases the midrange, helping the pedal cut through a busy mix.

Is the Hoof suitable for doom and stoner rock?

Yes. Its thick low end, sustaining fuzz and adjustable mids make it particularly well suited to doom, stoner and heavy psychedelic styles.

Can the Hoof be used with bass?

Yes. The Hoof works very well with bass and retains plenty of low-frequency weight.

Can it produce lower-gain sounds?

Yes. Lower Fuzz settings can move towards gritty overdrive and lighter fuzz rather than full saturation.

Is the Hoof similar to a Big Muff?

It belongs broadly to the Muff-style fuzz family and takes inspiration from the classic green Russian circuit, but its hybrid transistor design and Shift control give it its own character.

Does the Hoof have true bypass?

Yes. It uses relay-based true bypass switching.

Does the pedal need power for bypassed signal to pass?

Yes. Because the switching is relay based, power is required for audio to pass through the pedal.

What power supply does it need?

It requires a standard 9V DC centre-negative power supply.

How much current does it draw?

Approximately 15mA.

Is a power supply included?

No. A compatible power supply is not included.
