EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife Octave Distortion & Booster
Description
The EarthQuaker Devices Sunn O))) HalfLife is a compact octave distortion and clean boost pedal developed with Sunn O))), bringing the core Life Pedal signal chain into a more pedalboard-friendly enclosure.
It combines a blendable analogue octave-up, high-gain distortion with three selectable clipping modes and an independent MOSFET clean boost. The result ranges from tight distortion and grinding OpAmp drive to chaotic octave fuzz, sustained feedback and heavily saturated amp tones.
Inspired by the front-end setup used during the creation of Sunn O)))’s Life Metal, the HalfLife is particularly well suited to doom, drone, sludge, stoner rock, experimental, noise and heavy alternative guitar.

What Makes The Sunn O))) HalfLife Special?
The HalfLife condenses the core idea behind the Sunn O))) Life Pedal into a smaller format without losing the three-stage signal path that makes the circuit so distinctive.
An analogue octave-up stage feeds a high-gain distortion circuit inspired by the classic “White Face” style, followed by a separate MOSFET clean boost designed to push valve amplifiers even harder.
The octave distortion and boost sections can be switched independently, giving you several ways to use the pedal within one rig.
Blendable Analogue Octave
The Octave control gradually blends an analogue octave-up effect into the distortion.
At lower settings it adds subtle harmonic content. Increase it and the sound becomes more aggressive, eventually moving towards Super Fuzz-style octave textures.
For the clearest octave effect:
- Use the neck pickup
- Play single notes
- Play above the 12th fret
Because the octave circuit is analogue and monophonic, chords become intentionally clangorous and chaotic.
Three Clipping Modes
OpAmp
Removes the clipping diodes for maximum output and a raw, grinding OpAmp distortion sound.
Asymmetrical
Uses two silicon diodes and one LED for a smoother, slightly compressed response with a more amp-like feel.
Symmetrical
Uses traditional silicon diode clipping for tighter compression and the classic distortion character associated with this style of circuit.
Independent MOSFET Clean Boost
The Magnitude section is a full-range MOSFET boost that adds level without intentionally adding distortion of its own.
Use it to:
- Push a valve amp harder
- Add volume for leads
- Increase saturation from the distortion section
- Drive another pedal further
- Create feedback and harmonic overtones
Because the boost has its own footswitch, it can also be used independently from the octave distortion section.
Expression-Controlled Octave
The dedicated Octave EXP input allows a compatible expression pedal to control the octave blend in real time.
This makes it possible to create octave swells and move between straight distortion and extreme octave fuzz without bending down to adjust the pedal.
Simple Controls
Octave
Blends in the analogue octave-up effect.
Filter
A low-pass filter covering approximately 500Hz to 30kHz. Turn clockwise to reduce high frequencies or anticlockwise for a brighter response.
Distortion
Controls gain, with up to approximately +60dB available.
Amplitude
Sets the output level of the octave distortion section.
Magnitude
Controls the output level of the independent clean boost.
Who Is It For?
The Sunn O))) HalfLife is ideal for:
- Doom guitarists
- Drone players
- Sludge
- Stoner rock
- Noise rock
- Experimental guitar
- Heavy psychedelic music
- Feedback-heavy rigs
- Valve amp users
- Players who want octave fuzz and distortion in one pedal
- Guitarists looking for a more compact Life Pedal-style setup
Why Choose An Octave Distortion & Boost Pedal?
A standard distortion pedal provides one main gain stage.
The HalfLife gives you three interacting sections:
- Analogue octave
- High-gain distortion
- Clean MOSFET boost
This gives you significantly more tonal range than a conventional distortion pedal.
You can use it for straightforward high-gain drive, add octave harmonics for fuzzier textures, then engage the boost to push the entire signal harder into your amplifier.
How It Compares
HalfLife vs Sunn O))) Life Pedal V3
The Life Pedal V3 offers the same broad octave-distortion-boost concept in a larger enclosure with separate octave switching.
The HalfLife is the more compact option, designed to deliver the essential Life Pedal sound in a smaller pedalboard footprint.
HalfLife vs Conventional Distortion
A normal distortion pedal generally offers one clipping stage and tone shaping.
The HalfLife adds analogue octave processing, three clipping modes, an independent clean boost and expression-controlled octave blending.
HalfLife vs Traditional Octave Fuzz
A conventional octave fuzz is designed primarily around the octave effect.
The HalfLife combines octave fuzz textures with a full high-gain distortion section and separate MOSFET boost, making it much more flexible for heavy rhythm and lead sounds.

FAQs
What does the Sunn O))) HalfLife do?
It combines analogue octave-up, high-gain distortion and an independent MOSFET clean boost.
Is the HalfLife related to the Life Pedal?
Yes. EarthQuaker Devices describes it as the most compact pedalboard-friendly version of the Life Pedal distortion circuit to date.
What clipping modes does it have?
It offers OpAmp, asymmetrical and symmetrical clipping.
Can I use the boost independently?
Yes. The Magnitude boost has its own footswitch and can operate separately from the octave distortion section.
Can the octave be controlled with an expression pedal?
Yes. A compatible expression pedal can control the analogue octave blend.
How do I get the strongest octave sound?
Use the neck pickup and play single notes above the 12th fret.
What happens when I play chords?
Because the octave is analogue and monophonic, chords create more chaotic and metallic textures.
Is the HalfLife good for doom?
Yes. Its high-gain distortion, analogue octave fuzz and clean boost make it particularly well suited to doom, drone, sludge and stoner rock.
Does it work well with valve amps?
Yes. The clean boost was specifically designed to push amplifier preamp stages harder.
Does it have true bypass?
Yes. It uses relay-based true bypass with EarthQuaker Devices Flexi-Switch® technology.
How much power does it need?
It requires 9V DC centre-negative power and draws approximately 15mA.
Is a power supply included?
No. A suitable power supply is not included.
