Detailed Features & Benefits
Classic American Precision Bass Construction
The American Professional Precision Bass follows the essential Fender P Bass design that has helped shape popular music since the 1950s. Its solid alder body provides a balanced tonal foundation, combining strong low frequencies with the focused midrange response for which the Precision Bass is renowned. The traditional body contours and familiar silhouette make the instrument comfortable to handle, while the American-made construction reflects Fender's longstanding approach to professional electric bass design.
Fender V-Mod Split-Coil Pickup
The American Professional Precision Bass features Fender's original V-Mod split-coil pickup, developed by pickup specialist Michael Bump. The design uses a combination of Alnico magnet types to balance warmth, punch and clarity across the strings. Its passive split-coil configuration provides the powerful, focused response associated with classic Precision Bass recordings, making it equally effective for fingerstyle playing, aggressive pick-driven bass lines and warmer vintage-inspired sounds.
1963-Inspired C-Shaped Neck Profile
The '63 P Bass neck profile was selected by Fender to capture the comfortable feel of a highly regarded period in Precision Bass history. Its C-shaped contour provides a satisfying balance between substance and accessibility, making it particularly appealing to players who prefer a traditional neck with a refined feel. The maple neck features a satin urethane finish on the rear, helping the fretting hand move smoothly during longer playing sessions.
Narrow-Tall Frets & 9.5-Inch Radius
The American Professional Series introduced narrow-tall frets designed to provide precise articulation and a comfortable playing experience. These frets complement the 9.5-inch fingerboard radius, offering a useful balance between vintage-inspired comfort and modern bass technique. The combination supports clear fretted notes, smooth position changes and consistent performance across the neck.
Posiflex Graphite Neck Reinforcement
Fender's Posiflex graphite support rods are incorporated into the American Professional Precision Bass neck to provide additional stability. Positioned beneath the fingerboard, these reinforcement rods help resist unwanted neck movement caused by changes in temperature and humidity. This feature is particularly useful for working musicians who regularly transport their instruments between different venues, studios and rehearsal environments.
HiMass Vintage Bridge
The American Professional Precision Bass features Fender's HiMass Vintage bridge, combining traditional four-saddle construction with modern improvements intended to enhance sustain and resonance. Its design provides a substantial connection between the strings and body, while individual saddles allow accurate adjustment of string height and intonation. The result is a practical bridge arrangement that maintains classic Fender styling while supporting professional setup requirements.
Lightweight Tapered-Shaft Tuners
The redesigned lightweight vintage-style tuning machines feature tapered shafts that help guide the string windings downwards towards the headstock. This creates a more consistent break angle over the nut, contributing to dependable tuning performance and a clear string response. Their traditional appearance also complements the Precision Bass's classic aesthetic.
Simple, Effective Passive Electronics
The Precision Bass has always been appreciated for its straightforward control arrangement, and the American Professional model retains this essential simplicity. A master volume control adjusts the output of the split-coil pickup, while the master tone control allows players to shape the overall brightness. Rolling back the tone produces warm, rounded bass sounds, while opening it up provides greater attack and definition for more aggressive styles. This intuitive arrangement makes the bass exceptionally practical during live performance.
Versatile Fingerstyle & Pick Response
The American Professional Precision Bass responds naturally to different playing techniques. Fingerstyle playing produces a rounded, full-bodied sound with strong fundamental notes, while a plectrum introduces additional attack and midrange definition. The bass also works well with palm-muted techniques and vintage-inspired playing styles, demonstrating why the Precision Bass has remained a recording and performance standard across so many musical genres.
Timeless Black Finish
The Black finish gives this Fender American Professional Precision Bass a classic, understated appearance. Its simplicity complements the traditional Precision Bass body shape and makes the instrument suitable for virtually any musical setting. Whether used for blues, rock, soul, pop or contemporary studio work, the Black finish provides a professional look that has remained popular throughout Fender's history.
Who Is It For?
Professional Bassists: A reliable American-made instrument suited to demanding live and studio work.
Rock Bassists: The split-coil pickup provides powerful midrange punch and excellent note definition.
Soul & Motown Players: Warm, rounded passive tones suit traditional fingerstyle bass lines.
Blues Musicians: Offers responsive dynamics and the classic sound of a Fender Precision Bass.
Session Musicians: A versatile instrument that fits naturally into a wide range of musical arrangements.
Fender Enthusiasts: An appealing early American Professional Series instrument.
Playing Styles & Applications
The Fender American Professional Precision Bass is exceptionally versatile, making it suitable for rock, blues, soul, funk, pop, punk, country, indie, gospel and studio recording.
For traditional soul and blues, rolling back the tone control produces a warm, rounded response that sits naturally within a rhythm section.
For rock and punk, opening the tone control and using a plectrum creates the focused attack and powerful midrange presence for which the Precision Bass is famous.
Its clear, consistent note response also makes it an excellent choice for recording, where the fundamental bass tone remains defined and easy to position within a mix.
How It Compares
Fender American Professional Precision Bass vs Fender American Standard Precision Bass
The American Professional Series succeeded the American Standard range, introducing refinements to the pickup design, neck profile, fretwork and hardware. The V-Mod pickup provides a distinctive interpretation of traditional Precision Bass tone, while the '63 neck profile and narrow-tall frets offer a different playing feel from the preceding American Standard design. Both models are capable professional instruments, but the American Professional emphasises a blend of vintage inspiration and modern refinement.
Fender American Professional Precision Bass vs Fender American Professional II Precision Bass
The American Professional II builds upon the original American Professional concept with updated V-Mod II pickups, refined neck finishing and additional ergonomic improvements. The first-generation American Professional retains its original V-Mod pickup design, '63 neck profile and HiMass Vintage bridge, making it an attractive option for players who appreciate the earlier specification.
Fender American Professional Precision Bass vs Fender Player Precision Bass
The Fender Player Precision Bass provides an accessible interpretation of the classic P Bass design, while the American Professional adds premium USA construction and more advanced hardware appointments. Features such as the V-Mod pickup, Posiflex graphite neck reinforcement, narrow-tall frets and lightweight tuning machines distinguish the American Professional as a higher-specification instrument.
Fender Precision Bass Heritage
Introduced in 1951, the Fender Precision Bass changed the course of popular music by providing musicians with a practical, amplified alternative to the traditional upright bass.
Its revolutionary design made it possible for bassists to perform with greater volume, consistency and precision, helping establish the sound of modern rhythm sections.
The Precision Bass became central to countless recordings across rock, soul, blues, funk, country and popular music.
The American Professional Series, introduced for 2017, continued this legacy by combining established Fender design principles with carefully developed refinements for contemporary musicians.
The result is an instrument that preserves the unmistakable Precision Bass identity while offering the comfort, stability and reliability expected from a modern professional electric bass.
