Fender Big Block Telecaster Black Electric Guitar, (Used)
Pairs well with
Description
The Fender Big Block Telecaster in Black is one of the more unusual Telecaster variants from Fender’s mid-2000s Mexican production, combining the familiar Tele body shape with bold cosmetic detailing and a distinctly Strat-inspired electronics layout.
Rather than the traditional two-pickup Telecaster configuration, the Big Block Telecaster features three single-coil pickups and a 5-way selector, giving access to glassy two-pickup combinations alongside familiar bridge, middle and neck sounds.
Its visual specification is equally distinctive, with a black finish, matching painted headstock, large block fingerboard inlays and chrome mirror-style pickguard giving the guitar a much more aggressive appearance than a conventional Telecaster.
This Pre-Owned example is in Good condition, weighs 8.04 lbs, and carries serial number MZ5129876.
No case is included.

MID-2000s MEXICAN PRODUCTION
The MZ5 serial prefix is consistent with Mexican Fender production from the mid-2000s, around the period in which the Big Block Telecaster was produced.
The Big Block series was a relatively short-lived Fender range, making these guitars considerably less common than standard Mexican Telecasters from the same era.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
The Big Block Telecaster offers something genuinely different from a standard Tele.
Its three-pickup layout gives it access to the bright bridge attack and familiar Fender neck sounds expected from a Tele-style instrument, while positions two and four provide the glassier, phase-combined tones normally associated with a Stratocaster.
Add the unusual block inlays, mirrored hardware and matching headstock, and this becomes a particularly distinctive Fender for players who want something outside the usual vintage-inspired mould.
DETAILED FEATURES & BENEFITS
Classic Telecaster Body Shape
The Big Block retains the familiar Telecaster single-cutaway body shape, providing the straightforward ergonomics and upper-fret access associated with the design.
Black Finish & Matching Headstock
The gloss Black finish is carried through to the face of the headstock, giving the guitar a much more unified and aggressive appearance than a standard Telecaster.
Large Block Inlays
One of the defining features of the Big Block series is its oversized fingerboard block inlays.
These give the guitar a visual identity more commonly associated with custom or deluxe-style instruments.
Rosewood Fingerboard
The rosewood fingerboard slightly softens the overall attack compared with an all-maple Telecaster while retaining plenty of Fender definition.
9.5" Radius
The 9.5" fingerboard radius provides a comfortable compromise between vintage Fender curvature and more modern flatter fingerboards.
It works well for rhythm playing, bends and lead work.
21 Medium-Jumbo Frets
The guitar uses 21 medium-jumbo frets, giving it a familiar Fender feel with enough fret height for comfortable bending and vibrato.
THREE SINGLE-COIL PICKUPS
The Big Block Telecaster departs significantly from the traditional Telecaster formula by using three single-coil pickups.
This expands the available tonal range and makes the guitar particularly versatile for players who like both Telecaster and Stratocaster-style sounds.
5-WAY STRAT-STYLE SWITCHING
The pickups are controlled using a 5-way selector.
The available positions are:
-
Bridge
-
Bridge + Middle
-
Middle
-
Middle + Neck
-
Neck
The reverse-wound / reverse-polarity middle pickup provides hum-cancelling operation in the two combined positions.
TELECASTER & STRATOCASTER CHARACTER
The bridge position retains the cutting, direct character associated with a Telecaster-style guitar.
Positions two and four introduce the glassy, scooped response more normally associated with a Stratocaster.
This makes the Big Block especially useful for players who want a single Fender capable of covering both territories.
STRING-THROUGH SIX-SADDLE BRIDGE
The Big Block Telecaster uses a six-saddle string-through-body bridge.
Each string has individual intonation adjustment, while the string-through design maintains the familiar Tele-style connection between strings and body.
VINTAGE-STYLE MACHINE HEADS
Vintage-style tuning machines complement the model’s black matching headstock and Fender spaghetti-style logo.

HOW IT COMPARES
Big Block Telecaster vs Standard Telecaster
A traditional Telecaster uses two pickups and a 3-way selector.
The Big Block uses three single coils and 5-way Strat-style switching, giving it a wider range of combined-pickup sounds.
Big Block Telecaster vs Stratocaster
The electronics cover some familiar Stratocaster territory, but the Telecaster body, hardtail bridge and overall construction retain a firmer and more direct feel.
Big Block Telecaster vs Modern Player Telecasters
Later Fender models have also explored non-traditional Telecaster pickup layouts, but the Big Block remains particularly distinctive because of its matching headstock, mirrored cosmetics and oversized block inlays.

FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★
Best suited for: Players who like Telecaster ergonomics but want the additional tonal range of a three-single-coil Fender setup.
Customers usually upgrade from: Standard Mexican Telecasters, entry-level Fender and Squier models, and conventional two-pickup Tele-style guitars.
Most commonly paired with: Clean valve amplifiers, overdrive, fuzz, delay, chorus and reverb.
Our tip: Spend some time with positions two and four. They are the key to what makes the Big Block different, providing glassier combined-pickup sounds that a conventional Telecaster cannot produce.
Showroom feedback: The Big Block is one of the more visually distinctive Mexican Fender models from this period. The three-pickup layout genuinely expands its usefulness, while the black-and-chrome cosmetics make it immediately recognisable.
