What Makes the Hohner Super Chromonica Special?
The Super Chromonica is one of Hohner's classic chromatic harmonica designs and has remained remarkably traditional throughout its long history. Its double-lacquered pearwood comb gives it the feel and tonal character associated with classic wooden harmonicas, while 48 brass reeds provide the response and dynamic control required for expressive melodic playing.
Its integrated slide mechanism gives the player access to the chromatic notes between the natural notes of the instrument, significantly expanding its musical possibilities compared with a standard diatonic harmonica. This makes the Super Chromonica particularly well suited to jazz, classical, pop and other styles where melodies regularly move beyond a single diatonic key.
Who Is It For?
The Super Chromonica in C is ideal for developing, intermediate and experienced harmonica players who want greater melodic flexibility than a traditional 10-hole diatonic instrument provides.
Its chromatic layout makes it particularly appealing to musicians interested in jazz, classical melodies, film themes, folk music and pop arrangements where sharps, flats and key changes are common.
It can also suit diatonic harmonica players looking to broaden their musical vocabulary and explore a different style of harmonica playing.
Why Choose a Chromatic Harmonica?
A chromatic harmonica uses a slide to give access to notes outside the basic major scale. Pressing the slide redirects the airflow to an additional set of reeds, typically raising the available notes by a semitone.
This means a chromatic harmonica can play all 12 notes of the chromatic scale and is therefore capable of performing melodies in multiple keys without requiring a separate harmonica for every key.
For players interested in jazz, classical music or complex melodic arrangements, this flexibility can be a major advantage over a conventional diatonic harmonica.
12-Hole, Three-Octave Range
The Super Chromonica features 12 holes and 48 brass reeds, providing a tonal range spanning three octaves.
This extended range gives players considerably more melodic freedom than a typical 10-hole diatonic harmonica and makes the instrument suitable for everything from simple melodies to more sophisticated solo arrangements.
Traditional Pearwood Comb
At the heart of the Super Chromonica is a double-lacquered pearwood comb.
The lacquer treatment helps reduce moisture-related swelling while retaining the traditional tactile character associated with wooden-comb harmonicas.
Hohner has also optimised the comb design to provide improved response in the upper register, helping notes speak clearly across the instrument's full range.
Smooth Chromatic Slide
A straight slide mechanism gives access to the chromatic notes needed for sharps, flats and key changes.
With the slide released, players have access to the instrument's standard C-major-based note layout. Pressing the slide provides the corresponding chromatic notes, greatly expanding the range of melodies and musical styles that can be played.
48 Brass Reeds
The Super Chromonica uses 48 brass reeds mounted on 1.05 mm brass reed plates.
These provide the responsive articulation and dynamic control required for expressive melodic playing, allowing the instrument to respond naturally to changes in breath pressure and phrasing.
Nickel-Plated Brass Mouthpiece
The nickel-plated brass mouthpiece provides the solid, traditional playing feel associated with classic Hohner chromatic harmonicas.
Combined with the slide assembly and wooden comb, it contributes to the distinctive construction and character that have made the Super Chromonica an enduring part of Hohner's range.
Traditional Stainless-Steel Covers
The Super Chromonica features stainless-steel cover plates with traditional styling and embossed detailing.
These protect the internal reed assembly while preserving the classic appearance associated with the Chromonica series.
