Why Choose The Ibanez AZ2204NW-SFB?
Seymour Duncan Fortuna HSS Pickups
The Fortuna set was developed for the AZ-N concept with an emphasis on clarity, dynamic response and cleaner tonal versatility. The two single-coils retain the brightness expected from an S-style guitar, while the bridge humbucker provides greater weight for overdrive and lead work.
dyna-MIX9 Switching System
A conventional five-way selector works alongside the Alter switch to provide nine pickup combinations, significantly expanding the useful sounds available without covering the guitar in additional switches.
S-TECH Roasted Maple Neck
Ibanez’s S-TECH roasting process is designed to improve neck stability while the oil-finished AZ Oval C profile gives the neck a smooth, played-in feel.
Compound-Radius Rosewood Fingerboard
The fingerboard changes from approximately 9" at the nut to 12" at the 22nd fret, keeping chord work comfortable in lower positions while providing a flatter surface for bending and lead playing higher up.
Jumbo Stainless-Steel Frets
The Prestige fret treatment and stainless-steel construction provide an exceptionally smooth surface for bends and vibrato while offering significantly greater wear resistance than traditional nickel-silver fretwire.
Gotoh T1702B Tremolo
The T1702B uses brass saddles and a brass tremolo block, with 10.5mm string spacing and a non-recessed cavity. It provides expressive tremolo movement while keeping the overall playing feel familiar to players coming from traditional S-style guitars.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
AZ2204NW vs Ibanez AZ2204
The regular AZ2204 uses Hyperion pickups and a roasted-maple fingerboard, giving it a slightly more modern and powerful character. The AZ2204NW uses Fortuna pickups and rosewood, making it the stronger choice for players prioritising cleaner, more traditional HSS tones.
AZ2204NW vs AZ2204N
Both belong to the AZ-N branch of the family and share the Fortuna pickup concept, but the NW version uses the T1702B bridge and its own visual specification. The core appeal remains the same: a more vintage-influenced tonal direction within the modern AZ platform.
AZ2204NW vs Fender American Ultra Stratocaster HSS
The Fender offers contemporary Stratocaster styling and its own advanced switching, while the Ibanez adds stainless-steel frets, a compound radius, Prestige construction and the particularly flexible dyna-MIX9 system.
AZ2204NW vs Suhr Classic S HSS
Both target professional players wanting a refined HSS instrument. The Suhr takes a boutique American approach, while the Ibanez offers Japanese Prestige construction, nine-way switching and a distinctly modern AZ neck and body design.
Who Is It For?
Session Guitarists
The combination of HSS electronics and expanded switching makes the AZ2204NW particularly useful when one guitar needs to cover several different parts within the same recording session.
Fusion And Modern Blues Players
The comfortable neck, compound radius and articulate Fortuna pickups suit expressive lead playing without forcing the guitar into an ultra-high-output rock specification.
Pop And Function Musicians
Clean single-coil sounds, thicker bridge humbucker tones and multiple combined settings make this a practical choice for players covering several styles during one set.
Rock Guitarists
The bridge Fortuna humbucker provides enough body for driven rhythm and lead sounds while retaining greater tonal variety than a traditional twin-humbucker instrument.
Players Moving Into Prestige-Level Ibanez Guitars
For someone upgrading from a Standard or Premium instrument, the Japanese Prestige fret finishing, hardware and overall construction are major attractions.

What Makes The AZ2204NW Different From A Traditional HSS Guitar?
A conventional HSS guitar usually gives you five pickup positions and a relatively straightforward electronics layout. The AZ2204NW keeps that familiar foundation but uses the dyna-MIX9 Alter system to unlock additional series and coil combinations.
This means the guitar can move beyond the normal neck single-coil, intermediate and bridge humbucker sounds without becoming awkward to operate. Combined with the compound radius, stainless frets and modern neck joint, it offers vintage-inspired tones within a much more contemporary performance platform.

Story & Context: Ibanez AZ2204NW
Ibanez created the AZ series around the idea that modern players increasingly move between rock, metal, blues, jazz, fusion and other styles rather than staying within one narrow category. The range deliberately combined familiar bolt-on guitar ergonomics with modern neck construction, advanced switching and high-quality Gotoh hardware.
The company later developed the AZ-N concept for 2021, placing greater emphasis on wide-ranging clean tones and musical styles rooted in blues, jazz, funk and neo-soul. Rosewood fingerboards, compound radii and the Seymour Duncan Fortuna pickup family were important parts of that change in direction.
The AZ2204NW appeared as a new Japanese Prestige model in the 2022 range, taking the AZ-N philosophy into a high-specification HSS guitar with locking Gotoh hardware, stainless-steel frets and dyna-MIX9 switching.
The Seafoam Blue SFB version was subsequently offered as a more limited colour variation, giving this example an immediately recognisable finish alongside the already distinctive NW specification.

Why Buy Pre-Owned From Fair Deal Music?
Buying Pre-Owned can be an excellent way to access Japanese Prestige instruments and discontinued or limited colour combinations while making your budget go further.
The AZ2204NW-SFB is particularly appealing because the Seafoam Blue finish is less commonly encountered than the core AZ2204NW colours, while the underlying specification remains one of the most versatile in the Prestige range.
At Fair Deal Music, our Pre-Owned guitars are individually checked and assessed before sale, helping customers buy premium and specialist instruments with greater confidence.
Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Ibanez AZ2204NW-SFB Prestige Seafoam Blue is an outstanding professional all-rounder for players who want more tonal flexibility than a conventional HSS guitar without sacrificing straightforward operation.
The Fortuna pickups lean towards clarity and dynamic response, while the dyna-MIX9 system provides additional sounds when needed. Add the superb Prestige fret finishing, roasted maple neck, compound-radius rosewood board and Gotoh hardware and this becomes a highly refined working instrument.
Best suited for: Session players, fusion guitarists and versatile live musicians who need one premium guitar to cover a wide range of styles.
Customers usually upgrade from: Ibanez Premium models, Fender Player or American-series HSS guitars and other mid-to-high-end S-style instruments.
Most commonly paired with: Valve amplifiers, amp modellers, compressors, overdrive, delay, chorus and reverb.
Our tip: Spend some time with the Alter switch rather than treating it as an occasional extra. Several of the additional dyna-MIX9 combinations can be extremely useful for rhythm and cleaner studio parts.
Showroom feedback: The NW specification feels less overtly “modern shred” than some AZ models. The Fortuna pickups and rosewood fingerboard give it a versatile, musical character while the Prestige construction keeps the playing experience exceptionally refined.
