Description
Quick Product Summary
The Jackson JS Series Dinky JS20 DKQ 2PT in Transparent Black Burst delivers classic Jackson styling, dual-humbucker power and performance-focused playability at an accessible price, making it a strong choice for beginners, developing players and guitarists looking for an affordable rock or metal instrument.
Its compact poplar Dinky body is topped with a Quilted Maple Art Grain treatment beneath the Transparent Black Burst finish, giving the guitar a much more premium visual character than a conventional solid-colour entry-level electric.
The bolt-on maple neck features a scarf joint and graphite reinforcement, while the bound amaranth fingerboard uses Jackson's 12"-16" compound radius with 24 jumbo frets. That gives newer players a comfortable platform for learning while providing enough upper-fret range and flatter geometry for bends, tapping and faster lead techniques as their playing develops.
A pair of Jackson High-Output ceramic humbuckers provides the thicker, punchier response associated with rock and metal, controlled through a straightforward three-position blade selector, master volume and master tone.
With black hardware, pearloid sharkfin inlays and Jackson's distinctive pointed six-in-line headstock, the JS20 DKQ 2PT offers genuine Jackson attitude without requiring a premium-level budget.

As with any wooden instrument, setup can shift slightly during delivery because of changes in temperature and humidity. Minor adjustment after arrival can occasionally be required as the guitar settles into its new environment.
Service / Setup Work
The JS20 DKQ 2PT is checked before dispatch for suitable neck relief, action, intonation, tuning operation and overall playability.
The two-point fulcrum tremolo is also checked for normal operation.
If you intend to make a substantial change to string gauge or tuning, a setup adjustment may be beneficial.
Why Choose The Jackson JS20 DKQ 2PT?
Classic Jackson Dinky Design
The Dinky is one of Jackson's most recognisable performance-oriented body shapes.
Its compact double-cutaway design feels comfortable whether you're practising seated or playing standing, while the aggressive styling immediately separates it from a traditional vintage-inspired electric guitar.
24 Jumbo Frets
The JS20 provides 24 jumbo frets, giving you two complete octaves on every string.
For a developing guitarist, that means there is plenty of room to grow into higher-register lead playing, tapping and modern techniques without immediately needing to upgrade simply because the neck has become limiting.
12"-16" Compound-Radius Fingerboard
Jackson's compound-radius design starts at 12 inches near the nut and progressively flattens to 16 inches towards the upper frets.
The rounder lower area remains comfortable for chord shapes and rhythm work, while the flatter upper register gives bends and faster lead passages more room.
Graphite-Reinforced Maple Neck
The bolt-on maple neck uses graphite reinforcement alongside a scarf-joint construction.
Graphite helps strengthen the neck against movement caused by changing temperature, humidity and string tension, making it a useful performance feature on an instrument at this price point.
Dual Jackson High-Output Humbuckers
The JS20 uses two ceramic Jackson High-Output humbuckers.
The bridge pickup is particularly well suited to distortion, power chords, palm-muted riffs and heavier rhythm playing, while the neck pickup provides a fuller sound for leads and smoother melodic work.
Straightforward Controls
A master volume, master tone and three-position selector keep the guitar simple.
This is particularly helpful for beginners because it provides enough tonal choice to learn how pickup selection changes your sound without introducing unnecessary switches or complicated active electronics.
Two-Point Tremolo
The two-point fulcrum tremolo provides expressive pitch movement without the additional maintenance and setup involved with a full double-locking Floyd Rose.
For players learning their first tremolo techniques, it provides a useful balance between functionality and simplicity.
Jackson JS20 DKQ 2PT vs Popular Alternatives
JS20 DKQ 2PT vs Jackson JS22 Dinky
Both guitars provide an accessible route into the Jackson Dinky family.
The JS20 DKQ stands out through its Quilted Maple Art Grain appearance and two-point tremolo, making it particularly appealing if you want the look of a figured-top guitar without stepping into a considerably more expensive range.
JS20 DKQ 2PT vs Jackson Dinky With Floyd Rose
A double-locking Floyd Rose is better suited to extreme dives, pull-ups and repeated aggressive tremolo use.
The two-point system on the JS20 is easier to live with for newer players, especially when restringing or making basic tuning adjustments.
JS20 DKQ 2PT vs Traditional S-Style Beginner Guitar
A traditional beginner S-style guitar often uses three single-coil pickups and focuses on clean, blues and vintage-inspired sounds.
The JS20 is much more deliberately aimed towards rock and metal, with high-output humbuckers, 24 frets, compound-radius geometry and aggressive Jackson styling.
JS20 DKQ 2PT vs Higher-Spec Jackson Dinky
Moving further up the Jackson range can add upgraded pickups, premium tremolo systems and more advanced hardware.
The JS20 remains the stronger value choice for beginners or developing players who want the essential Dinky playing experience before investing in higher-level hardware.
Who Is It For?
The Jackson JS20 DKQ 2PT is particularly well suited to:
-
Beginner electric guitarists
-
Developing players
-
Rock guitarists
-
Hard-rock players
-
Metal musicians
-
Players learning lead techniques
-
Guitarists wanting 24 frets
-
Players who prefer humbuckers
-
Musicians wanting an affordable tremolo-equipped guitar
-
Guitarists looking for an inexpensive second instrument
-
Players attracted to aggressive Jackson styling
Playing Styles & Applications
The JS20 feels particularly comfortable when connected to an amplifier with overdrive or distortion.
Use the bridge pickup for tighter riffs, power chords and palm-muted rhythm work. The ceramic humbucker has the output and attack needed to work effectively with higher-gain settings without requiring active electronics.
The neck pickup is useful for sustained solos, warmer melodic lines and cleaner sounds where the bridge position feels too sharp.
Using both pickups together provides a broader rhythm voice that works well when you want more body without relying entirely on either individual pickup.
The 24-fret fingerboard also makes the JS20 particularly suitable for a player beginning to explore lead guitar techniques such as hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, vibrato and tapping.
What Does A Compound-Radius Fingerboard Do?
The term compound radius describes a fingerboard whose curvature gradually changes as you move up the neck.
On the JS20 DKQ, the fingerboard begins at 12 inches near the nut and flattens progressively to 16 inches towards the upper frets.
This gives rhythm players a comfortable surface for chords while creating more space higher up the neck for bends and technical lead work.
It is an impressive feature for an accessible JS Series guitar because it gives a beginner room to develop rather than restricting the instrument to basic playing.

What Is A Quilted Maple Art Grain Top?
Jackson describes the top treatment on this model as Quilted Maple Art Grain.
It creates the visual impression of a figured quilted top while helping keep the JS20 within the accessible price range of the JS Series.
The Transparent Black Burst finish allows the pattern to remain visible rather than covering the body with an opaque colour.
For players who want an affordable guitar that still has a more dramatic stage appearance, it is one of this model's most obvious visual advantages.
Story & Context
The Jackson Dinky has become one of the company's signature body shapes, combining a compact double-cutaway body with the fast-playing features closely associated with Jackson's rock and metal heritage.
Jackson instruments became especially recognisable through features such as pointed headstocks, sharkfin fingerboard inlays, powerful pickups and neck specifications designed around increasingly technical playing styles.
The JS Series brings those ideas into a more accessible part of the range.
Rather than producing a beginner guitar that merely looks like a Jackson, models such as the JS20 DKQ still incorporate features such as graphite neck reinforcement, a compound-radius fingerboard and 24 frets.
That makes the guitar a useful starting point for players who want to develop within the rock and metal styles Jackson is known for.

Compatibility & Recommended Pairings
The JS20 DKQ 2PT works particularly well with:
-
Modelling practice amplifiers
-
Rock and metal guitar amplifiers
-
Distortion and overdrive pedals
-
Noise gates for higher-gain setups
-
Delay and reverb
-
Clip-on or pedal tuner
-
Quality instrument cable
-
Secure guitar strap
A suitable Jackson Dinky/Soloist-format gig bag or hard case makes a sensible addition if the guitar will regularly travel to lessons, rehearsals or gigs.
Power Requirements
The Jackson High-Output humbuckers are passive, so the JS20 DKQ requires no battery or external power supply.
Connect it to a suitable amplifier, pedalboard, modeller or audio interface using a standard ¼-inch instrument cable.
Fair Deal Music Expert Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Jackson JS Series Dinky JS20 DKQ 2PT in Transparent Black Burst is a strong first or developing electric guitar for anyone interested in rock, hard rock and metal.
Its biggest strength is that the specification leaves room for the player's technique to develop. The 24 jumbo frets and compound-radius fingerboard are not features a beginner immediately needs on day one, but they become increasingly useful as lead playing, bends and faster techniques progress.
The high-output humbuckers also make it easy to achieve convincing distorted tones through a suitable practice amplifier.
Finally, the Transparent Black Burst and Quilted Maple Art Grain top give the instrument a more premium visual identity than many guitars at this level.
Best suited for: Beginners and developing rock or metal players wanting a 24-fret dual-humbucker guitar with tremolo.
Customers usually upgrade from: Starter-pack electrics, short-scale beginner guitars or basic fixed-bridge instruments.
Most commonly paired with: A modelling practice amplifier, tuner, strap, instrument cable and Jackson gig bag.
Our tip: Don't use the bridge pickup with maximum distortion for everything. Learning how the neck and combined positions react to cleaner amp settings will help you understand how much tonal variety a two-humbucker guitar can offer.
Showroom feedback: The compound-radius fingerboard and 24-fret neck are the features that make the JS20 particularly worthwhile for a developing player. There is much less risk of quickly outgrowing the basic playing specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Jackson JS20 DKQ suitable for a beginner?
Yes. The simple controls and two-point tremolo make it approachable, while the 24-fret compound-radius neck gives the player enough performance capability to grow into.
Is this guitar mainly designed for metal?
Rock and metal are obvious strengths because of the high-output humbuckers, but it can also cover punk, alternative, general rock and cleaner playing by adjusting the amplifier and pickup selection.
Are the pickups active?
No. The Jackson High-Output humbuckers are passive ceramic pickups and require no battery.
What is the benefit of 24 frets?
Twenty-four frets provide two complete octaves on each string, giving lead players additional high-register notes compared with a traditional 21- or 22-fret neck.
Is the bridge a Floyd Rose?
No. It uses a two-point fulcrum tremolo, which provides useful pitch movement without the locking nut and additional setup requirements of a Floyd Rose.
Is the JS20 good for learning lead guitar?
Yes. Its jumbo frets, 24-fret range and compound-radius fingerboard make it particularly suitable for learning bends, legato, tapping and faster lead techniques.
What is an amaranth fingerboard?
Amaranth is the fingerboard material used on this guitar. Jackson pairs it with white binding and pearloid sharkfin inlays for the familiar Jackson appearance.
What does graphite neck reinforcement do?
Graphite rods add structural support to the maple neck and help it resist movement caused by environmental and string-tension changes.
Can I tune the JS20 to Drop D?
Yes. Drop D can be used with the two-point tremolo, although substantial permanent tuning or string-gauge changes can require setup and intonation adjustment.
What is the difference between Transparent Black Burst and a solid black guitar?
The Transparent Black Burst finish allows the Quilted Maple Art Grain pattern beneath it to remain visible, giving the front of the instrument additional visual depth.
Does it need a battery?
No. The electronics are completely passive.
Is a case included?
No case or gig bag is included with the guitar.
