Description
Quick Product Summary
The Korg KROSS 2 88 is a remarkably portable 88-key synthesizer workstation that combines a piano-style NH Natural Weighted Hammer Action keyboard with extensive sounds, sequencing, sampling, audio recording and performance features.
Powered by Korg's EDS-i Enhanced Definition Synthesis – integrated sound engine, the KROSS 2 provides more than 1,000 ready-to-play sounds, up to 120-note polyphony, extensive effects, dual arpeggiators, a 16-track MIDI sequencer and a versatile 16-pad sampler. Despite its full 88-note weighted keyboard, it weighs just 12.3kg and can even operate from six AA batteries, making it an unusually practical workstation for pianists, performers, songwriters and producers who need serious creative power without the bulk of a traditional 88-key workstation.

What Makes the Korg KROSS 2 88 Special?
The KROSS 2 88 combines the full playing range and graded response of an 88-note weighted keyboard with workstation functionality normally associated with much larger instruments. The NH action gives the lower notes a heavier feel and progressively lightens towards the treble, creating a response designed to feel more natural when playing piano and electric piano sounds.
Its portability is equally impressive. At only 12.3kg, the KROSS 2 88 is considerably easier to transport than many full-size workstation keyboards, while battery operation gives performers even greater flexibility away from a conventional mains-powered setup.
Why Choose the Korg KROSS 2 88?
88-Key Natural Weighted Hammer Action
Korg's NH Natural Weighted Hammer Action provides graded key weighting, with greater resistance towards the bass and a lighter response in the upper register.
For musicians who regularly play acoustic and electric piano parts, this gives the KROSS 2 88 a significantly more substantial and expressive feel than the synth-style keyboard used on the 61-note version.
More Than 1,000 Sounds
The EDS-i sound engine delivers a comprehensive library covering acoustic and electric pianos, organs, strings, brass, guitars, orchestral instruments, synthesizer pads, leads, drums and electronic sounds.
Programs can also be extensively edited, allowing experienced musicians to create customised sounds rather than relying solely on factory presets.
Up to 120-Voice Polyphony
The sound engine provides up to 120 voices of polyphony in single-oscillator mode, giving plenty of headroom for sustained piano passages, layered sounds and complex arrangements.
Available polyphony varies according to the oscillator configuration and samples being used.
16-Pad Sampler
A dedicated 16-pad sampler allows sounds from the keyboard or an external audio source to be captured and triggered directly.
Eight pad banks are available, with up to approximately 14 seconds of stereo sampling per pad and simultaneous playback of up to four pads.
16-Track MIDI Sequencer
The integrated 16-track MIDI sequencer can store up to 128 Songs and approximately 210,000 MIDI events.
Complete arrangements can therefore be recorded, developed and edited directly on the keyboard, making the KROSS 2 useful as both a performance instrument and standalone composition workstation.
64-Step Sequencer
The 16 pads can also be used with the integrated 64-step sequencer, providing an intuitive way to build drum patterns and rhythmic sequences.
Combined with the dedicated Drum Track and hundreds of preset patterns, this provides a fast way to develop grooves when writing, practising or performing.
Dual Polyphonic Arpeggiators
Powerful arpeggiators can generate far more than conventional up-and-down note patterns, including bass phrases, rhythm parts, chords and guitar-style figures.
Combination and Sequencer modes can run two arpeggiators simultaneously, creating sophisticated layered performances from relatively simple keyboard input.
USB Audio and MIDI
A single USB connection allows the KROSS 2 to function as both a USB MIDI and USB audio interface with a compatible computer.
This makes it straightforward to integrate into a modern DAW-based production setup without requiring a separate MIDI interface for many applications.
Battery Powered Portability
Despite its 88 weighted keys, the KROSS 2 can operate from six AA batteries as well as its supplied AC adaptor.
For musicians rehearsing, writing or performing in locations where conventional power is inconvenient, this is an unusually useful feature for a full-size workstation.
Why Choose an 88-Key Synthesizer Workstation?
An 88-key workstation combines the playing range and weighted response associated with a digital piano with the creative possibilities of a synthesizer and production workstation.
For pianists, this means acoustic and electric piano parts can be played naturally across the full keyboard range. At the same time, synth sounds, layered Combinations, splits, sequencing, sampling and effects provide far more creative scope than a conventional stage or home digital piano.
The KROSS 2 88 is particularly attractive because it delivers these functions without the size and weight normally associated with a full-size workstation.
Who Is the Korg KROSS 2 88 For?
Pianists
The full 88-note range and graded NH hammer action make the KROSS 2 88 far better suited to traditional piano technique than a conventional synth-action workstation.
Gigging Keyboard Players
Its 12.3kg weight is remarkably manageable for an 88-note workstation, making it a strong option for musicians regularly transporting their own equipment.
Songwriters
A 16-track sequencer, Drum Track, step sequencer, arpeggiators and audio recording provide numerous ways to turn a basic musical idea into a complete arrangement.
Producers
Sampling and USB audio/MIDI connectivity allow the KROSS 2 to work effectively alongside computer-based recording and production software.
Students and Developing Musicians
The KROSS 2 provides enough depth for serious musical development while remaining approachable for players moving from a digital piano or portable keyboard into their first synthesizer workstation.
Story & Context
Korg has played a major role in the history of workstation keyboards, with instruments such as the M1, Triton, M3, KRONOS and NAUTILUS establishing a long-running approach that combines sound generation and music production within one keyboard.
The KROSS series was developed with portability as a major priority. Rather than simply reducing the features of a larger workstation, Korg created a platform designed to offer sequencing, synthesis and performance functionality in a substantially lighter instrument.
The KROSS 2 expanded that concept with a larger sound library, 16-pad sampling and USB audio interface functionality while retaining the unusually lightweight construction that made the original KROSS popular with travelling musicians.
Korg KROSS 2 88 Compared
KROSS 2 88 vs KROSS 2 61
The KROSS 2 61 uses a lightweight velocity-sensitive synth-style keyboard and weighs only 3.8kg, making it the obvious choice where minimum size and weight are the priority.
The KROSS 2 88 uses an NH Natural Weighted Hammer Action keyboard, making it significantly better suited to acoustic piano, electric piano and players accustomed to weighted keys.
KROSS 2 88 vs Korg NAUTILUS 88
The NAUTILUS 88 is a substantially more advanced professional workstation, offering multiple specialised sound engines, greater processing depth, touchscreen operation and more extensive sound-design capabilities.
The KROSS 2 88 is considerably lighter and more straightforward, making it particularly appealing to players who want a full-size weighted workstation without the additional weight, complexity or cost of a flagship instrument.

Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Korg KROSS 2 88 is an exceptionally practical workstation for pianists who want a full-size weighted keyboard without the considerable weight normally associated with professional 88-note instruments.
Its NH Natural Weighted Hammer Action makes piano and electric piano performance far more satisfying than on a lightweight synth action, yet the complete instrument weighs only 12.3kg and can even operate from AA batteries.
Add more than 1,000 sounds, 16-track sequencing, sampling, step sequencing, dual arpeggiators, stereo audio recording and USB audio/MIDI connectivity, and the KROSS 2 becomes far more than a portable digital piano.
For gigging pianists, songwriters and producers who want a lightweight 88-key instrument capable of handling both serious performance and music production, the KROSS 2 88 offers an excellent combination of playability, portability and creative flexibility.
