What Makes the Korg Pa5X 88 Special?
The Pa5X 88 brings together two worlds that are often separated: the substantial response and full range of an 88-note hammer-action keyboard and the sophisticated real-time accompaniment of a professional arranger.
Under the surface is Korg's powerful EDS-XP architecture, backed by extensive sampling, professional effects and a flexible dual-player system. The result is far more than a keyboard with automatic backing—it is a comprehensive performance and arranging environment capable of becoming the centre of a professional live setup.
Why Choose the Korg Pa5X 88?
88-Note Hammer Action with Aftertouch
The Pa5X 88 is the most piano-oriented instrument in the Pa5X family. Its full A0–C8 keyboard range provides all 88 notes of a traditional piano, while hammer action gives pianists a more substantial response than the semi-weighted 61 and 76-note versions.
Aftertouch adds another level of expression, allowing compatible sounds and effects to respond to additional key pressure after the initial note has been played.
EDS-XP Sound Engine
Korg's EDS-XP Enhanced Definition Synthesis – Expanded engine provides an enormous range of detailed and expressive sounds with up to 160 voices of polyphony.
The factory library contains more than 2,200 sounds, including five multilayer stereo acoustic pianos with damper and body resonance, along with electric pianos, organs, guitars, orchestral instruments, synths and more than 130 Drum Kits.
More Than 600 Factory Styles
The Pa5X provides over 600 professionally arranged factory Styles covering a huge selection of musical genres.
Each Style can include three Intros, four Variations, four Fills, a Break and three Endings, allowing the accompaniment to evolve naturally throughout a performance rather than sounding like a repetitive backing track.
XDS Crossfade Dual Player
Korg's patented XDS Crossfade Dual Player allows two Styles, Songs or combinations of the two to be loaded simultaneously.
A dedicated X-Fader allows smooth transitions between them, making it possible to move from one song to another without disrupting a live set.
Powerful Sampling
The Pa5X provides 4GB of User PCM sample data capacity, equivalent to approximately 8GB of linear data when compressed.
Korg, WAV, AIFF and SoundFont formats can be loaded, giving professional users extensive freedom to expand the keyboard with personalised sounds and third-party libraries.
Professional Vocal Processing
The balanced microphone input features phantom power and feeds an integrated Shift Audio microphone processor.
Processing includes compression, EQ, gate, four-part harmonisation, doubling, filtering, modulation, delay, reverb and AutoPitch, providing a highly capable vocal setup directly inside the keyboard.
Dedicated Guitar Processing
A separate guitar input connects to an integrated four-slot guitar effects rack with stompbox-style effects and amplifier simulation.
This gives singers, guitarists and solo entertainers the ability to build a more complete performance setup around a single instrument.
Extensive Hands-On Control
The Pa5X offers nine assignable sliders, nine assignable buttons, 16 Matrix Pads, joystick, ribbon controller and three assignable switches.
These controls provide direct access to important performance parameters without forcing experienced players to rely exclusively on touchscreen menus.
Why Choose an 88-Key Professional Arranger?
An arranger keyboard generates sophisticated musical accompaniment that follows the chords being played in real time. The performer can control intros, variations, fills, breaks and endings while remaining free to change harmony or extend sections as required.
For pianists, an 88-note version offers an additional advantage. The full keyboard range allows traditional piano repertoire and two-handed playing to feel more natural while also providing considerably more physical space for sophisticated keyboard splits.
The Pa5X 88 therefore suits musicians who want the expressive response of a substantial piano-style keyboard but require much more performance flexibility than a conventional digital piano.
Who Is the Korg Pa5X 88 For?
Pianists
The 88-note hammer-action keyboard makes this the most natural Pa5X choice for players coming from an acoustic piano or premium digital piano background.
Professional Entertainers
Styles, dual Players, SongBook, vocal processing and extensive live controls make the Pa5X a formidable all-in-one system for professional solo and small-ensemble performance.
Singers and Vocal Performers
Built-in microphone processing and four-part vocal harmonisation can dramatically simplify a live vocal setup.
Songwriters and Arrangers
Extensive Styles, Chord Sequences, sampling and a full 16-track sequencer provide a sophisticated environment for rapidly turning musical ideas into complete arrangements.
Studio Musicians
The full-size keyboard, professional audio connectivity, MIDI, USB, multiple outputs and extensive sound library allow the Pa5X 88 to become a powerful central keyboard within a larger studio.
Story & Context
Korg's Pa series has evolved through multiple generations into one of the company's most advanced professional arranger platforms, combining intelligent real-time accompaniment with increasingly sophisticated synthesis, recording and live-performance technology.
The Pa5X generation introduced the EDS-XP sound engine, redesigned graphical interface, XDS Crossfade Dual Player, 16-pad Matrix and a significantly expanded hands-on control surface.
The 88-note model takes this platform further for piano-oriented musicians by combining the Pa5X performance environment with a full-range hammer-action keyboard and aftertouch.
Korg Pa5X 88 Compared
Pa5X 88 vs Pa5X 76
Both instruments share the same core Pa5X sound and arranger technology. The Pa5X 76 uses a 76-note semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch, making it lighter and particularly suited to players who favour synth and general keyboard techniques.
The Pa5X 88 uses a full-range hammer-action keyboard and is the better choice where piano feel and an 88-note playing range are the priorities.
Pa5X 88 vs Pa5X 61
The Pa5X 61 is significantly smaller and lighter, making it the easiest version to transport regularly. The Pa5X 88 instead provides the most substantial playing experience and considerably more keyboard space for piano performance and complex splits.
Pa5X 88 vs Pa5X-OR Oriental
The standard Pa5X is designed around a broad international sound and Style library. The separate Pa5X-OR Oriental range adds specialist factory content specifically developed for Arabic, Turkish, Persian and wider Middle Eastern performance.

Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Korg Pa5X 88 is one of the most complete professional arranger keyboards available for pianists who refuse to compromise on playing range or keyboard feel.
Its 88-note hammer-action keyboard with aftertouch immediately separates it from most performance arrangers, making acoustic and electric piano sounds considerably more satisfying for players accustomed to a substantial piano-style action.
Yet the Pa5X 88 goes far beyond piano performance. More than 2,200 sounds, 600+ Styles, extensive sampling, dual crossfading Players, powerful vocal and guitar processing and comprehensive hands-on controls make it capable of handling an entire professional live performance from one instrument.
For pianists, composers and professional entertainers who want flagship arranger capabilities combined with a full 88-note keyboard, the Pa5X 88 is an outstanding choice.
