What Makes the Nord Stage 4 73 Special?
The Nord Stage 4 73 brings Nord's flagship Stage architecture to a compact hammer-action keyboard, making it particularly appealing to professional musicians who need serious piano response alongside organ and advanced synthesis.
Its redesigned interface provides dedicated LED faders for individual layers, while the Layer Scene system lets you move between two different sound setups instantly. Combined with extensive effects, physical organ drawbars and one of Nord's most powerful Synth sections, it is built for musicians who need sophisticated sounds without sacrificing immediate hands-on control.
Why Choose the Nord Stage 4 73?
73-Note Triple Sensor Hammer Action
The Stage 4 73 features a 73-note Triple Sensor Hammer Action keyboard with medium weighting and Aftertouch.
Its E-to-E range provides six octaves of playing space while reducing the overall dimensions compared with an 88-note stage keyboard. This makes it an excellent compromise for pianists who want weighted response but regularly transport their own equipment.
Aftertouch for Expressive Performance
Aftertouch allows additional expression to be introduced simply by applying pressure after a note has been played.
It can be used as one of the Stage 4's Morph sources, making it possible to control suitable sound parameters expressively without taking your hands away from the keyboard.
Three Powerful Sound Sections
At the heart of the Stage 4 are its dedicated Organ, Piano and Synth sections.
Rather than operating as simple preset engines, these sections offer multiple independent layers, extensive real-time control and their own performance features. This makes it possible to build complex sounds while retaining the direct workflow for which Nord instruments are known.
Two Independent Piano Layers
The Piano section provides two independent layers and 2GB of dedicated piano memory.
Nord's Piano Library covers Grands, Uprights, Electric Pianos, Digital and Layer sounds, Clavinets and Harpsichords, while String Resonance, Dynamic Compression, Soft Release, Timbre controls and Unison allow sounds to be adapted to different performance environments.
120-Voice Piano Polyphony
With up to 120 voices of Piano polyphony, the Stage 4 provides plenty of headroom for detailed playing, sustained passages and sophisticated layered arrangements.
This is especially useful when combining large piano sounds or using extensive sustain pedal techniques.
Two-Layer Organ Section
The Organ section provides two independent layers and Nord's acclaimed simulations of classic tonewheel, transistor and pipe organs.
Models include B3-style tonewheel organ, Vox Continental, Farfisa and digital Pipe Organs, alongside B3 Bass functionality.
Physical Drawbars with LED Indicators
The Stage 4 73 features physical organ drawbars with LED position indicators, giving organ players genuine hands-on control.
Registrations can be adjusted intuitively during a performance, while Drawbar Live mode provides an immediate connection between the physical controls and the sound.
Advanced Rotary Speaker Simulation
Nord's Rotary Speaker section provides selectable Stop, Slow and Fast speeds alongside dedicated overdrive.
This is a key part of achieving convincing classic organ tones, from clean jazz registrations to heavily driven rock organ.
Nord Wave 2 Synth Engine
The Stage 4's Synth section is based around technology from the Nord Wave 2 and provides three independent Synth layers.
It supports Virtual Analog-style waveforms, digital waves, FM synthesis and Nord Sample Library sounds, giving the Stage 4 enormous range for leads, basses, pads, strings, brass, atmospheric textures and modern electronic sounds.
1GB Sample Memory
A dedicated 1GB memory for Nord Sample Library content allows a substantial collection of sampled instruments to be stored within the Stage 4.
Compatible samples can be replaced through Nord Sound Manager, allowing players to tailor the keyboard's internal collection to their own performance requirements.
Advanced Synth Sound Shaping
The Synth section offers multiple filter types, Filter Drive, envelope control, LFO modulation, Unison and extensive oscillator options.
With 46-voice Synth polyphony, three independent layers and extensive real-time controls, the Stage 4 goes far beyond the simple sample-based synth sections found in many stage pianos.
Advanced Arpeggiator
The Stage 4 features an advanced Arpeggiator with Arp, Polyphonic and Gate modes.
Customisable patterns, Accent and Pan options and Master Clock synchronisation make it suitable for everything from traditional arpeggios to sophisticated rhythmic and sequenced-style performance textures.
Layer Scene
One of the Stage 4's standout live features is Layer Scene, which provides two different layer setups within a programme.
This allows musicians to switch rapidly between different sound combinations during a song without having to load an entirely different programme, making complex arrangements significantly easier to perform.
Dedicated LED Layer Faders
Dedicated LED faders for each layer make the Stage 4's complex architecture much easier to control.
Levels can be seen and adjusted instantly, giving you an immediate overview of a multi-layer sound and making real-time balancing far more intuitive.
Dedicated Effects for Every Layer
The Stage 4 provides a dedicated effects section for each layer, allowing different instruments to receive different processing rather than sharing a single effects chain.
Modulation, Delay, amplifier simulation, EQ and other effects can therefore be tailored around each individual part of a split or layered performance.
Extensive Performance Effects
Available effects include Tremolo, Auto Pan, Ring Modulation, Wah, Auto-Wah, Pump, Phaser, Flanger, Vibe, Chorus, Ensemble and Spin.
There are also amplifier and speaker simulations, Tube Drive, three-band EQ, Compression, sophisticated Delay and multiple Reverb algorithms.
Flexible Splits & Crossfades
The keyboard can be divided using up to three split points, creating four keyboard zones.
Three Split Point Width options allow sounds to change immediately or crossfade smoothly between adjacent zones, making sophisticated layered setups feel much more natural.
Morph Controls
The Stage 4 provides three Morph sources: Modulation Wheel, Control Pedal and Aftertouch.
Compatible parameters can be assigned to these controllers, allowing multiple changes to take place expressively during a performance without navigating menus.
Designed for Professional Live Use
With 512 programme locations, eight Live programmes, a comprehensive Preset Library and extensive MIDI functionality, the Stage 4 is designed for musicians who need to organise complex professional performances.
Four assignable audio outputs also provide flexibility for sending different sounds to separate channels on a mixer, PA or recording setup.
Who Is It For?
The Nord Stage 4 73 is aimed at serious and professional keyboard players who need acoustic and electric pianos, organ and advanced synthesizer sounds from a single premium instrument.
Its hammer-action keyboard makes it particularly attractive to piano-focused performers who still require genuine organ and synth capabilities.
It is an excellent choice for touring musicians, session players, theatre keyboardists, worship musicians, producers and professional performers working across pop, rock, soul, funk, jazz, electronic and contemporary music.
Story & Context
The Nord Stage series was created to combine the major keyboard sounds required by working musicians into one performance-focused instrument, bringing dedicated Piano, Organ and Synth engines together behind an immediate hands-on interface.
Over successive generations, Nord expanded the platform with increasingly sophisticated piano libraries, synthesis, layering, effects and performance controls.
Introduced in 2023, the Stage 4 represented a major redesign of the flagship concept. Dedicated LED layer faders, a new Preset Library, Layer Scene functionality, a Nord Wave 2-derived Synth engine and dedicated effects for individual layers significantly expanded its capabilities while preserving Nord's direct approach to live performance.
Nord Stage 4 73 vs Nord Stage 4 88
The Stage 4 73 and Stage 4 88 share the same core Organ, Piano and Synth architecture, including Triple Sensor Hammer Action with Aftertouch.
The key difference is physical range and portability. The 73 provides six octaves from E to E and weighs 16.7kg, while the 88 provides a full piano-range keyboard and weighs 19.6kg.
For players who need all 88 notes, the larger model is the natural choice. For regular gigging where space and portability matter, the Stage 4 73 offers an excellent compromise.
Nord Stage 4 73 vs Nord Stage 4 Compact
Although both instruments have 73 keys, their playing feel is very different.
The Stage 4 73 uses Triple Sensor Hammer Action, making it the stronger option for piano-oriented performers. The Stage 4 Compact uses a lighter Triple Sensor Semi-Weighted Waterfall action that is particularly well suited to organ and synth techniques.
The Compact is significantly lighter at 10.4kg, while the Stage 4 73 weighs 16.7kg due largely to its substantial hammer-action mechanism.
Nord Stage 4 vs Nord Piano
The Nord Stage 4 is the more comprehensive performance instrument, adding a dedicated Organ engine and substantially deeper three-layer Synth section to its professional Piano capabilities.
Nord Piano models place greater emphasis on dedicated piano performance and a streamlined piano-plus-sample architecture. For musicians who regularly need convincing piano, organ and advanced synth sounds from the same keyboard, the Stage 4 is the more versatile choice.

Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Nord Stage 4 73 is one of the strongest choices in the Nord range for a professional player who wants flagship capability but does not need a full 88-note keyboard.
Its Triple Sensor Hammer Action provides the piano response serious players expect, yet the instrument goes far beyond traditional stage-piano territory. For touring musicians, theatre players, session keyboardists and performers who genuinely need piano, organ and advanced synthesis from one professional 73-key instrument, the Nord Stage 4 73 is an exceptional all-round performance keyboard.
