What Makes The PRS SE Hollowbody Standard Special?

The SE Hollowbody Standard offers a different experience from a conventional solidbody PRS. Its fully hollow all-mahogany construction adds natural resonance, warmth and acoustic response, giving notes and chords a more open character while retaining the control and practicality of a twin-humbucker electric guitar.

It is also remarkably versatile. The 58/15 “S” pickups provide enough clarity for clean jazz and blues while remaining full and powerful when pushed into overdrive, making this a hollowbody that can comfortably move beyond traditional jazz applications into rock, indie and contemporary styles.

Key Features & Benefits

All-Mahogany Hollowbody Construction

Mahogany is used across the top, middle and back of the body, creating a warm and resonant foundation with plenty of midrange character. The hollow construction adds an airy response and natural sustain that distinguishes the guitar from a solidbody PRS.

PRS 58/15 “S” Humbuckers

The twin 58/15 “S” pickups are designed around a vintage-inspired humbucker voice with strong clarity and balance. The neck pickup works particularly well for warm clean tones, while the bridge provides enough definition and bite for blues, rock and lead playing.

Wide Fat Neck Profile

The PRS Wide Fat neck has a substantial, comfortable feel that suits players who prefer a traditional neck profile without it becoming excessively bulky. It works particularly well for chord playing, blues phrasing and expressive lead work.

Ebony Fingerboard

The ebony fingerboard provides a smooth playing surface with a clear, immediate response, while PRS bird inlays give the guitar the unmistakable visual identity associated with the brand.

PRS Adjustable Stoptail

The adjustable stoptail bridge combines a clean, simple design with individual saddle adjustment, making accurate intonation straightforward while maintaining a solid connection between the strings and guitar.

Simple, Practical Electronics

A master volume, master tone and three-way pickup selector keep the control layout intuitive. The simplicity makes it easy to move quickly between warm neck sounds, balanced mixed tones and brighter bridge-pickup voices.

Comparison Against Popular Alternatives

PRS SE Hollowbody Standard vs PRS SE Hollowbody II

The Hollowbody II uses a different body construction and places greater emphasis on maple within its design, giving it a somewhat different tonal and visual character. The Hollowbody Standard's all-mahogany construction is particularly appealing to players looking for warmth, simplicity and a more understated aesthetic.

PRS SE Hollowbody Standard vs PRS SE Hollowbody II Piezo

The Hollowbody II Piezo adds a dedicated piezo system for acoustic-style sounds alongside its magnetic pickups, making it more versatile for players who need electric and acoustic tones from one instrument. The Standard is the more straightforward choice for players focused primarily on traditional electric hollowbody sounds.

PRS SE Hollowbody Standard vs Epiphone ES-335

An ES-335-style guitar uses semi-hollow construction with a solid centre block, resulting in a tighter and more solidbody-like response with greater resistance to feedback at higher gain levels. The PRS Hollowbody Standard feels more open and resonant, making it particularly attractive for players who want a genuinely hollow electric guitar.

Who Is It For?

Jazz players – The warm neck pickup and hollow construction provide the smooth, rounded sounds traditionally associated with hollowbody guitars.

Blues guitarists – Its responsive humbuckers and resonant body make it excellent for dynamic clean and overdriven playing.

Rock and indie players – The bridge pickup has enough clarity and strength to move well beyond traditional hollowbody applications.

Studio musicians – Its tonal character offers something noticeably different from common solidbody guitars, making it useful for adding contrast to layered recordings.

Players wanting a versatile hollowbody – An excellent choice for musicians who want hollowbody warmth without being limited to one particular genre.

Why Choose A Hollowbody Electric Guitar?

A hollowbody electric guitar combines magnetic pickups with a resonant body that behaves more like an acoustic instrument than a conventional solidbody.

The result is often a more open, three-dimensional response, particularly when playing clean or at lower gain levels. Chords can feel broader, individual notes have an airy quality, and the guitar responds strongly to changes in picking dynamics.

Compared with a semi-hollow guitar, a fully hollow instrument generally has even more acoustic resonance. This makes it especially rewarding for jazz, blues and expressive playing, although players using very high stage volumes need to manage feedback more carefully than they would with a solidbody guitar.

Story & Context

PRS has traditionally been associated with precisely built solidbody electric guitars, but its Hollowbody designs demonstrate how the company's approach translates to more resonant construction.

The SE Hollowbody Standard brought that concept into the more accessible SE range while retaining many of the details players associate with PRS, including the 25" scale length, bird inlays, Wide Fat neck profile and versatile humbuckers.

Its all-mahogany construction gives the model its own identity within the wider PRS Hollowbody family, making it particularly appealing to players who value warmth and natural resonance over decorative figured-maple appointments.

Fair Deal Music Verdict

★★★★★ 5/5

The PRS SE Hollowbody Standard in McCarty Sunburst is an excellent option for players who want genuine hollowbody resonance without moving to a traditional large-bodied jazz guitar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PRS SE Hollowbody Standard fully hollow?

Yes. Unlike a semi-hollow guitar with a substantial centre block, the SE Hollowbody Standard uses genuine hollowbody construction for increased resonance and acoustic response.

How does the Hollowbody Standard sound compared with a solidbody PRS?

The hollow construction gives it a warmer, more open and resonant character, particularly noticeable on clean and lower-gain settings.

What neck profile does it have?

The guitar uses PRS's Wide Fat neck profile, giving it a substantial but comfortable feel.

Is it suitable for jazz?

Yes. The hollow construction and warm neck humbucker make it particularly effective for traditional clean jazz tones.

Can it handle rock and overdrive?

Yes. The 58/15 “S” humbuckers provide enough output and definition for blues rock, classic rock and indie. As with most fully hollow guitars, very high gain and extreme stage volume can increase the possibility of feedback.

What is the scale length?

The SE Hollowbody Standard uses PRS's familiar 25" scale length, sitting between the traditional Gibson 24.75" and Fender 25.5" formats.

Does it have coil splitting?

This version uses a straightforward master volume, master tone and three-way selector arrangement without coil-split switching.

Does the guitar require a battery?

No. The standard SE Hollowbody Standard uses passive magnetic pickups and requires no battery.

Does it come with a hardcase?

Yes. A hardcase is included with this pre-owned guitar.

How does it compare with the SE Hollowbody II Piezo?

The Hollowbody II Piezo adds a piezo system for acoustic-style sounds. The Hollowbody Standard is a simpler option for players who primarily want traditional magnetic-pickup hollowbody tones.

Is this a good studio guitar?

Yes. Its open hollowbody character can provide a useful contrast to solidbody guitars, particularly for clean rhythm parts, blues, jazz and layered arrangements.

Can I try it before purchasing?

Yes. This individual pre-owned PRS can be viewed at the Fair Deal Music Birmingham showroom, subject to availability.

Can I request a video demo?

Yes. Our Request a Video Demo service is ideal if you would like a closer look at the condition and individual character of the guitar before purchasing.

Can I part-exchange another guitar against it?

Yes. Fair Deal Music considers part exchanges and trade-ins across a wide range of musical equipment. Contact our team for a no-obligation valuation.
