Roland SPD-SX Sample Pad
The new SPD-SX Sampling Pad puts powerful sample creation and playback under your sticks with innovative audio-capturing features, expressive playability, three multi-effects engines, and much more.
Roland SPD-SX Sample Pad
The Roland SPD-SX Sample Pad is one of the most popular sample pads of all time, mixing value with extreme versatility and function, the SPDS-X cultivates all of the features of the models before as well as some other features from its brother and sister products in the Roland Range.
The Roland SPD-SX is at its heart, a powerful Sample Pad. Having 9 Pressure sensitive and lit-up pads to be able to play on and trigger your samples. You can expand this through one of the 2 Stereo Trigger inputs (and by splitting these Stereo inputs you can get up to Four Separate Mono Trigger inputs). Each of these pads can be set to run your own samples or any of the 145 usable sounds already in the sample pad. These pads can have different playability setting as well, meaning you can set that them to trigger one at a time, or have a sound loop, or make a sample on/off. All very easily accessible via the onboard control surface.
When using sounds on the SPD-SX, you can choose from one of a few ways of triggering your samples. You can either choose from 'One-Shot', 'Poly' and 'Loop'. In 'One-Shot' mode, the sound plays when triggered, and when re-triggering the sample, it cancels the original sound in favour of the new one. This is fantastic for melodic instruments that you don't want to have running at the same times. The 'Poly' mode means that when triggered, sounds overlap while playing at the same time. This works well for freestyle playing and experimental playing. In 'Loop' mode, triggering the sample plays the sound and when the sample ends, it starts from the beginning. When re-triggering the sample, it simply turns this sample off. This works well for loops and tracks that you want to have played multiple times but which to turn off at a moments notice.
In addition to this, you can 'link' pads together so that you can play multiple different sounds at once. For example, if you have a Drum Track, and you know that every time you hit the Drum Track, you want your Bass Track, you can pair the Drum Track to the Bass Track so that whenever you hit the Drum Track, it also triggers the Bass Track. This combination of pairing makes the unit incredibly versatile in how you set it up, meaning you can have multiple different instruments for different sections and phrases at songs in different combinations.
You can also record your own samples onto the pad itself using the jack input itself and then instantly store them onto any of the nine pads. The unit also has over 62 different effects which you can have in any combination on any part of the sample, you can control up to two parameters from these samples, on the two effect control knobs on the front of the unit. This means you can manipulate your samples on the go, and vocalists can use the SPD-SX to record samples and loop them and be able to manipulate them on the go.
Another powerful use of the system is it's "Sub" Output. Meaning that you can trigger two samples off of the sample pad but have them come out of two separate outputs on the back. By splitting tracks in different MONO signals, and panning them left and right, you can have up to 4 different audio tracks coming out of one pad! Meaning one can fire off your Guitar, Bass, Vocal, and Extras in one shot at the same time! Perfect for running multiple tracks on a backing track when playing live! By pairing multiple pads together, you can have a dozen sounds playing off one pad out of up four outputs!
The pad also has LED lights on each of the Nine pads allowing easy navigation in dark venues as well as easy identification of what track is playing and when. The unit also features a powerful MIDI Matric, allowing you to take full advantage of MIDI in your setup. By adding a MIDI output signal to any of your Sample pads, it will fire off a signal that can do thousands of different things. If connected to DAW's like Ableton or logic, you can trigger external samples, or run shows with Start-Stop functionality, you can also use it into other MIDI devices to be able to change patches/change sounds on other instruments. The System itself can act as the basis for your entire show with ease!
In addition to this, it makes it very easy to run backing tracks off of this system for a band scenario. With it's 100 different patches, you can either set a Master Click track which you can control with the knobs on the front of the module which can change with each patch and fire off any of your samples as you wish, or you can run a click track on any of the 9 pads and be able to trigger other samples off in time with the click, or pair them together with Pad Linking! The click track is easy to re-route using on the system so that routing of the click is versatile to any situation. Whether you want your click to yourself or share it with others through the sub output.
The system allows for an incredible amount of external triggering. By linking up to the two external stereo trigger inputs you can expand the units available triggering capability. Also, by splitting the stereo inputs, you can allow for four extra inputs. By attaching triggers such as the Roland BT-1 Bar Trigger or similar. It also has a versatile footswitch input for easier use and manoeuvrability.
The SPD-SX is also incredibly easy to work with when loading samples. You can either connect it to a PC or Mac with the included USB cable and download the free "Wave Manager" program, and be able to "Drag and Drop" you samples straight into the pads. You can also adjust your 'Sub' outs, and be able to pair pads through this system. In addition to this, you can have samples on a USB stick and play them directly from the USB sticks. You have 4GB of onboard storage on the SPD-SX to do so!
