Why You'll Love It
The Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound Jazz Bass set is an ideal choice for bassists who want to give their instrument additional power, punch and presence.
Traditional Jazz Bass pickups are celebrated for their articulation and versatility, but some musicians prefer a stronger, more assertive response when playing heavier music or competing with distorted electric guitars.
The Quarter Pound set addresses this through its oversized Alnico V pole pieces and hotter winding design, delivering a powerful sound with excellent attack.
The result is a pickup set capable of producing aggressive rock tones while retaining enough clarity for detailed fingerstyle playing and slap bass.
This particular set is especially appealing because it has never been installed, has been tested with no issues found and includes the original box and all hardware.
Detailed Features & Benefits
Powerful Quarter Pound Design
The Quarter Pound Jazz Bass pickups take their name from their oversized ¼-inch diameter Alnico V rod magnets. Combined with Seymour Duncan's specialised coil winding, these large pole pieces help produce a powerful signal with strong attack, full-bodied low frequencies and excellent note definition. The design is especially effective for players seeking greater presence and authority from a traditional Jazz Bass-style instrument.
High-Output Single-Coil Character
Although designed to deliver a more aggressive sound than traditional vintage-output pickups, the Quarter Pound set retains the clarity associated with genuine single-coil construction. This combination allows bassists to achieve thick, punchy tones without completely sacrificing articulation. It works particularly well when the bass needs to cut through a dense band mix.
Calibrated Neck & Bridge Pickups
The SJB-3S set includes dedicated neck and bridge pickups, designed to complement each other. The neck pickup delivers a full, rounded response, while the bridge pickup provides additional focus and bite. Blending the two creates a balanced sound with strong attack and low-end definition, giving players the familiar tonal flexibility of the Jazz Bass design.
Reverse-Wound, Reverse-Polarity Neck Pickup
The neck pickup features reverse-wound, reverse-polarity construction relative to the bridge pickup. This allows the pair to provide hum cancellation when both pickups are operated together at equal levels, reducing the unwanted noise commonly associated with single-coil pickups. When either pickup is used individually, normal single-coil noise characteristics may still be present.
Excellent Response for Pick Playing
The powerful output and pronounced attack of the Quarter Pound design make it particularly appealing to bassists who favour a pick. Its strong midrange presence and defined high frequencies help individual notes remain audible beneath distorted guitars, making it especially effective for punk, alternative rock and heavier musical styles.
Dynamic Fingerstyle & Slap Performance
The Quarter Pound set is not limited to aggressive pick playing. Its full low-frequency response and detailed high-end character also make it suitable for expressive fingerstyle performance. Players using slap techniques can benefit from the pickups' immediate attack and clear note definition, creating a punchy and responsive sound.
Passive Operation
The SJB-3 Quarter Pound pickups use passive electronics, meaning no battery or dedicated onboard preamp is required. They can operate through a conventional Jazz Bass-style passive wiring arrangement, making them an attractive upgrade for players who want greater output without introducing additional active circuitry.
Traditional Black Jazz Bass Appearance
Despite their powerful tonal character, the Quarter Pound pickups retain the familiar narrow Jazz Bass pickup format. Their black covers provide a classic, understated appearance, with the distinctive oversized magnetic pole pieces offering a subtle visual indication of the upgraded design.
American-Made Seymour Duncan Construction
The Quarter Pound Jazz Bass pickups are hand-built by Seymour Duncan in Santa Barbara, California. Their design incorporates Alnico V rod magnets, traditional Forbon flatwork and wax potting, reflecting the manufacturer's established pickup construction methods. This combination has helped make the Quarter Pound range a popular aftermarket option for bassists seeking a stronger, more assertive sound.
Who Is It For?
Rock Bassists: Ideal for musicians seeking powerful attack and excellent note definition.
Punk Players: Particularly effective for aggressive pick-driven bass tones.
Alternative & Indie Musicians: Adds punch and presence to Jazz Bass-style instruments.
Metal Bassists: Offers a more assertive response for heavier arrangements.
Slap & Fingerstyle Players: Provides strong attack with full low frequencies.
Bass Guitar Upgrades: An attractive replacement option for compatible passive Jazz Bass-style instruments.
Compatibility & Installation
The Seymour Duncan SJB-3 Quarter Pound set is designed for 4-string Jazz Bass-style instruments, using dedicated neck and bridge pickups.
The pickups are intended as direct replacements for standard American Jazz Bass pickup dimensions.
However, not all Jazz Bass-style instruments use identical pickup routs. Some Mexican-made Fender Jazz Bass models and other manufacturers' instruments have used different neck and bridge pickup dimensions.
We recommend checking the dimensions of your existing pickups and pickup cavities before purchasing.
Installation requires the pickups to be connected to the instrument's control circuit, typically using soldered connections.
Professional installation is recommended for customers who are not familiar with guitar electronics or soldering work.
How It Compares
Quarter Pound SJB-3 vs Seymour Duncan Vintage SJB-1
The SJB-1 Vintage Jazz Bass pickups are designed to reproduce traditional Jazz Bass tones, with a moderate output and familiar vintage character.
The SJB-3 Quarter Pound set offers a stronger, more aggressive response, making it particularly appealing for rock and heavier musical styles.
Quarter Pound SJB-3 vs Seymour Duncan Hot SJB-2
The SJB-2 Hot Jazz Bass pickups provide increased output and a warmer, midrange-focused character compared with vintage designs.
The Quarter Pound SJB-3 set places greater emphasis on attack and clarity alongside its powerful output, making it particularly effective for assertive bass playing.
Quarter Pound SJB-3 vs Active Bass Pickups
Active pickups and onboard preamps can provide additional tonal shaping and output options, but usually require a battery or dedicated power source.
The Quarter Pound pickups achieve their strong response through passive magnetic design, making them attractive for players who prefer straightforward electronics.
