Wampler Ratsbane Distortion, (Used)
Description
The Wampler Ratsbane Distortion is a compact, high-gain overdrive/distortion pedal inspired by the classic 1980s “Rat-style” distortion circuit, but reworked with Brian Wampler’s added flexibility and modern pedalboard practicality. This used example is in Excellent Condition and includes the original box, making it a strong choice for players who want everything from gritty drive and cutting rock distortion through to thick, saturated fuzz-like gain in a small-format pedal.
With Volume, Distortion and Filter controls, plus a 3-way Gain switch and 2-way Voice switch, the Ratsbane gives far more tonal control than a standard single-voice distortion pedal. It is ideal for rock, punk, grunge, alternative, indie, metal, garage, blues-rock and any player looking for a compact distortion pedal with plenty of bite, sustain and character.

Why Choose The Wampler Ratsbane Distortion?
Classic High-Gain Distortion Character With More Flexibility
The Ratsbane is based on the sound of a classic 1980s high-gain distortion circuit, giving it that familiar aggressive, mid-forward, snarling distortion voice that has been used across rock, punk, alternative and heavier guitar styles. Wampler describes it as capable of moving from light overdrive through to full saturated fuzz tones, which makes it much more versatile than a single-purpose heavy distortion box.
3-Way Gain Switch For Extra Range
One of the Ratsbane’s key upgrades is its 3-way Gain switch. The middle position gives the pedal its stock gain character, while the other two positions add extra gain stages for more saturation and intensity. This makes it useful for players who want one compact distortion pedal that can move from crunchy rhythm parts to thick lead gain and fuzz-like sustain.
Voice Switch For Compression And Clipping Options
The Voice switch changes the compression and clipping behaviour of the pedal. This lets you fine-tune the feel of the distortion, moving between a looser, more raw character and a tighter, more controlled response for higher-gain playing. That makes the Ratsbane practical across different guitars, amps and pickup types.
Filter Control For Cutting Or Smoother Tones
Like the classic circuit that inspired it, the Ratsbane uses a Filter control rather than a standard tone knob. Wampler explains that turning the filter counter-clockwise gives more high-frequency attack and mix-cutting clarity, while turning it clockwise rolls off the top end for a warmer, smoother sound.
Compact Pedalboard-Friendly Format
The Ratsbane gives you a wide range of distortion sounds in a small enclosure. That makes it a great fit for crowded pedalboards, fly rigs, compact home setups or players who want boutique-level gain tones without using up too much space.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
Wampler Ratsbane vs ProCo RAT 2
The ProCo RAT 2 is the classic reference point for this style of distortion, with a simple three-knob layout and instantly recognisable tone. The Wampler Ratsbane keeps the aggressive Rat-inspired character but adds extra gain and voicing flexibility through its toggle switches.
Choose the Ratsbane if you want more gain-shaping options in a compact pedal. Choose the RAT 2 if you want the most traditional version of the circuit.
Wampler Ratsbane vs JHS 3 Series Distortion
The JHS 3 Series Distortion is straightforward and affordable, with a simple control layout. The Ratsbane offers a more specific Rat-inspired voice with additional clipping and gain options, making it better for players who want more control over saturation and response.
Wampler Ratsbane vs Boss DS-1
The Boss DS-1 is brighter and more familiar as a classic hard-clipping distortion. The Ratsbane is thicker, more mid-focused and can move further into fuzzy, saturated territory.
Choose the DS-1 for sharp, classic orange-box distortion. Choose the Ratsbane for richer gain, more tonal shaping and a more boutique feel.
Wampler Ratsbane vs Wampler Sovereign
The Wampler Sovereign is a more amp-like distortion pedal with a broader modern rock voice. The Ratsbane is more focused around that classic aggressive, filter-based distortion sound.
Choose the Ratsbane for Rat-inspired bite and fuzz-like gain. Choose the Sovereign for a more polished, amp-style distortion platform.
Who Is It For?
Beginner Players
A good choice for beginners who want a high-quality distortion pedal with more tonal range than a basic entry-level stompbox. The core controls are easy to understand, while the switches give room to experiment as your ear develops.
Intermediate Players
Ideal for players building a more serious pedalboard and looking for a compact distortion that can cover overdrive, rock crunch, aggressive rhythm sounds and saturated lead tones.
Professional Players
A strong option for experienced players who want a compact, flexible Rat-inspired circuit for live use, studio sessions, fly rigs or as a gain-stacking tool with other pedals.

Why Choose A Rat-Inspired Distortion Pedal?
A Rat-style distortion is one of the most flexible dirt sounds available. At lower gain settings, it can work as a gritty boost or aggressive overdrive. At medium settings, it becomes a thick rock distortion with strong midrange presence. At higher gain settings, it moves into compressed, harmonically rich, fuzz-like territory.
That flexibility is what makes this type of circuit so useful. One pedal can cover cutting rhythm parts, thick lead lines, garage-style dirt, alternative rock textures and heavier saturated sounds. The Wampler Ratsbane builds on that core idea by adding gain and voice switching, giving players more control over how wild, tight or smooth the pedal feels.

Story & Context
The Wampler Ratsbane is Brian Wampler’s take on one of the most famous high-gain distortion circuits of the 1980s. Rather than making a straight clone, Wampler expanded the idea with additional gain staging and voicing options, giving modern players more control while keeping the aggressive character that made the original style so influential. Wampler describes the Ratsbane as his “tribute” to the original Rat circuit, incorporating how he modifies that circuit.
This makes the Ratsbane appealing for players who love classic distortion sounds but want a more flexible, boutique-style interpretation in a compact enclosure.

FAQ
Is the Wampler Ratsbane suitable for classic rock tones?
Yes. The Ratsbane can produce thick, harmonically rich distortion that works well for classic rock rhythm and lead tones, especially when paired with a valve-style amp or amp-in-a-box setup.
Can the Wampler Ratsbane do fuzz-style sounds?
Yes. At higher distortion and gain settings, the Ratsbane can move into saturated, fuzz-like territory while still retaining the focused response of a distortion pedal. Wampler describes it as capable of moving from light overdrive to full saturated fuzz tones.
Is the Ratsbane good for punk and grunge?
Yes. Its aggressive midrange, strong gain range and filter control make it well suited to punk, grunge, garage rock and alternative styles.
How does the Filter control work?
The Filter control shapes the top end. Counter-clockwise settings give more high-frequency attack and cut, while clockwise settings smooth the sound by reducing the top end.
Can the Ratsbane be used as a boost?
Yes. With the Distortion control set low and the Volume raised, it can be used as a gritty boost or low-gain drive. Wampler notes that with the distortion control turned down, the pedal can work as a deep but powerful gain booster.
Is it suitable for a compact pedalboard?
Yes. The Ratsbane uses a small enclosure, making it a strong choice for players who want boutique distortion tones without taking up much pedalboard space.
Can it run at 18V?
Yes. The Ratsbane can be powered from 9V to 18V DC using a suitable centre-negative power supply.
Is it good for recording?
Yes. The wide gain range and filter control make it useful for recording layered guitar parts, aggressive rhythm tracks and lead tones that need strong character without relying entirely on amp gain.
