Foot pedals are highly useful and can greatly improve the music experience of a player who plays the piano, as the pedals add colour and expression. Being able to use them well is, indeed, quite an advanced skill. Before you sit down to use the pedals, we suggest that you develop a basic working knowledge of piano playing before taking up the endeavour of learning to use the piano’s pedals.
Generally, there are two pedals that are commonly seen on pianos, along with a third one sometimes. The name of the first pedal is “una corda” also called the 'soft pedal' or 'piano pedal.' This is located on the left side and played by the left foot. It makes the piano sound softer and greatly enhances the softly played notes.
Then there is the most commonly used pedal which is the sustaining or 'damper' pedal, found on the right side of the piano and played by the right foot.
It enables the legato or the flowing effect when the notes are played. While the pedal is depressed, the notes played will begin to resonate even after the piano key is no longer being pressed.
This effect stops as the sustaining pedal is released. Let us save the technicalities for some other day but know that there may also be a blend of underscores and slash marks reflecting the exact moments regarding when they should be depressed and released.
The middle pedal is called the sostenuto pedal and was originally found only on American grand pianos. Much like the sustaining pedal, the sostenuto pedal is played using the right foot.
Mostly found on a few upright or 'practice' pianos, a majority of pianos do not have a middle or sostenuto pedal at all. The purpose and function of the sostenuto pedal on a grand piano is to reflect, sustain and support only particular notes while the player plays other notes in staccato or sharp way.
On an upright piano, the middle pedal simply sustains and supports lower octave notes.
Piano players and students must, at all costs, avoid the simple and common temptation to use these pedals. The sustaining pedal should never be used to cover up poor playing and horrible technique. Play only when you have learned the craft and mastered a piece without using the pedals and then incorporate the pedals.
