BOSS OD-1 (MIJ), (Used)
The BOSS OD-1 (MIJ) is an original Made in Japan overdrive pedal produced during the late 1970s and early 1980s, recognised as one of the first compact overdrive pedals in the BOSS lineup. It features a fully analogue circuit based on asymmetrical diode clipping, designed to emulate the natural breakup of a tube amplifier. The pedal delivers smooth, warm overdrive tones that respond dynamically to picking intensity and guitar volume changes. Its rugged metal enclosure reflects the durable construction standard of early Japanese BOSS pedals, ensuring long-term reliability and consistent performance.
The control interface consists of two simple knobs—Level and Overdrive—allowing users to balance output volume and gain saturation with precision. The circuitry is built around the RC3403AD operational amplifier, contributing to its characteristic midrange warmth and dynamic response. The OD-1’s overdrive texture retains note clarity and articulation, making it suitable for both rhythm and lead applications. Its design laid the foundation for many subsequent overdrive models, combining simplicity with highly musical tonal behaviour.
Connectivity includes standard 1/4-inch input and output jacks compatible with traditional pedalboard configurations. The pedal operates on a 9V power supply, and supports battery operation for convenience. The BOSS OD-1 (MIJ) represents an important milestone in overdrive pedal design, offering vintage analogue tone, responsive dynamics, and the build quality associated with early Japanese-made BOSS units.
