Premium GS Mini Style With Hawaiian Koa Character
The GS Mini has earned its reputation by delivering a surprisingly bold acoustic voice from a compact and highly portable body. The Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus elevates that proven design with premium appointments and an eye-catching Hawaiian koa construction.
The solid koa soundboard gives the guitar a clear, focused response with natural compression, allowing both individual notes and strummed chords to remain controlled and articulate. Layered koa is used for the back and sides, creating a consistent visual theme while providing the strength required for regular travel and performance.
Its reduced dimensions make the guitar comfortable to hold in almost any playing position, while Taylor’s slender neck profile and short scale make fretting feel smooth and relaxed.
Why Choose The Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus?
Solid Hawaiian Koa Top
The guitar’s solid Hawaiian koa top provides a distinctive alternative to the spruce and mahogany soundboards found on many compact acoustic guitars.
Koa produces a focused midrange, crisp articulation and a naturally controlled response. It reacts evenly to different playing dynamics, making it suitable for both fingerstyle playing and confident strumming.
As the solid koa top is played over time, additional warmth and harmonic complexity can gradually emerge, allowing the guitar’s voice to develop alongside its owner.
Layered Koa Back And Sides
The layered koa body complements the solid top with attractive grain patterns and excellent structural stability.
This layered construction is particularly practical for a compact guitar that may be carried between lessons, rehearsals, performances, holidays and recording sessions. It is less sensitive to environmental changes than an all-solid body while retaining the elegant visual character of Hawaiian koa.
Compact GS Mini Body
The GS Mini body is based on a scaled-down version of Taylor’s Grand Symphony shape.
Its reduced proportions make the guitar easy to hold, transport and store, but the body is still designed to deliver meaningful acoustic projection and a satisfying low-end response. It feels considerably more substantial than many conventional travel guitars while remaining much easier to handle than a full-sized acoustic.
Short 23½-Inch Scale Length
The 23½-inch scale creates lower string tension than a typical full-scale acoustic guitar.
This softer feel makes chords easier to hold, reduces the effort needed for string bends and creates a relaxed playing experience for longer practice or songwriting sessions. It can also benefit younger musicians, players with smaller hands and electric guitarists moving to an acoustic instrument.
Slender Taylor Neck
Taylor’s neck design is known for comfortable fretting, accurate intonation and straightforward adjustability.
The GS Mini-e Koa Plus combines a slim profile with a 1-11/16-inch nut width, producing a familiar feel that suits beginners and experienced musicians alike. Movement between open chords, barre chords and melodic passages feels smooth and natural.
Taylor Expression System 2 Electronics
The Expression System 2 uses three individually calibrated sensors positioned behind the saddle to capture the guitar’s dynamic response.
The system provides a strong, natural output for connection to an acoustic amplifier, PA system, mixing desk or suitable recording interface. Onboard volume, bass and treble controls allow the amplified sound to be adjusted without adding visually intrusive equipment to the guitar.
Upgraded Taylor Nickel Tuners
The Plus model features Taylor nickel tuning machines for a refined appearance and reliable tuning adjustment.
Their smooth action makes precise tuning straightforward whether the guitar is being prepared for home practice, recording or a live performance.
Lightweight Taylor AeroCase
The included Taylor AeroCase offers significantly greater protection than a conventional soft gig bag while remaining substantially lighter than a traditional wooden hardcase.
Its structured construction, secure closures and comfortable carrying options make the guitar easier to transport without adding unnecessary bulk or weight.
What Makes The Plus Model Different?
The GS Mini-e Koa Plus builds on the familiar GS Mini formula with equipment intended for more demanding players.
Its Expression System 2 electronics provide Taylor’s professional behind-the-saddle pickup design rather than the ES-B system fitted to several other GS Mini models. Taylor nickel tuners add another premium detail, while the supplied AeroCase gives the instrument increased protection during transport.
These upgrades make the Koa Plus particularly appealing to performers, recording musicians and frequent travellers who want more than a casual compact acoustic guitar.
Why Choose A Compact Electro-Acoustic Guitar?
A compact electro-acoustic guitar is easier to transport and more comfortable to hold than many traditional full-sized instruments.
The reduced dimensions make it practical for home use, holidays, backstage warm-ups, songwriting sessions and musicians working in limited spaces. A shorter scale also creates a softer string feel, which can encourage longer and more relaxed playing sessions.
Built-in electronics extend this versatility by allowing the guitar to be connected directly to amplification or recording equipment. This makes a well-designed compact guitar suitable for professional performance rather than restricting it to practice or travel use.
Who Is The Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus For?
Travelling Musicians
The compact dimensions and protective AeroCase make the GS Mini-e Koa Plus an excellent companion for rehearsals, holidays, writing sessions and performances away from home.
Singer-Songwriters
Its accessible size encourages spontaneous playing, while the focused koa voice works well for supporting vocals without producing excessive low-end competition.
Live Performers
Expression System 2 electronics provide a dependable amplified signal for acoustic amplifiers and PA systems, making the guitar suitable for open-mic nights, small venues and larger stage setups.
Recording Musicians
The controlled bass and clear midrange help the guitar sit naturally within a busy recording. Its distinctive koa character can provide a useful tonal contrast to conventional spruce-topped acoustics.
New And Developing Players
The shorter scale, manageable body and slender neck make the GS Mini-e Koa Plus physically approachable, while its quality construction removes the need for an immediate upgrade as the player develops.
Experienced Guitarists
More advanced musicians may appreciate it as a premium second acoustic, convenient songwriting instrument or compact professional guitar that can be kept close at hand.
The Taylor GS Mini Story
Taylor introduced the GS Mini to bridge the gap between a traditional travel guitar and a full-sized acoustic instrument.
Rather than producing a guitar that simply felt small, Taylor scaled down the curves of its Grand Symphony body shape while retaining a full-sized soundhole and a carefully voiced acoustic chamber. This helped the GS Mini produce greater depth and projection than many guitars of similar dimensions.
The GS Mini-e Koa Plus represents one of the most refined versions of this design, combining the series’ portability with Hawaiian koa, professional Taylor electronics and an upgraded carrying solution.

Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus Versus GS Mini-e Koa
Both models feature a solid Hawaiian koa top, layered koa body and compact GS Mini dimensions.
The Koa Plus upgrades the electronics to Taylor’s Expression System 2, adds Taylor nickel tuning machines and includes the more protective AeroCase. The standard GS Mini-e Koa is the more affordable option, while the Plus model is better suited to frequent performance and regular transport.
Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus Versus GS Mini-e Rosewood Plus
The Rosewood Plus combines a spruce top with layered rosewood back and sides, producing a more traditional acoustic character with strong clarity and a broader frequency response.
The Koa Plus offers a more focused midrange, natural compression and the distinctive visual appeal of Hawaiian koa. Both provide upgraded electronics and carrying protection, so the choice primarily comes down to tonal and aesthetic preference.
Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus Versus Taylor Academy 12e
The Academy 12e is a full-sized Grand Concert guitar with a longer scale, larger acoustic chamber and built-in armrest. It is particularly well suited to structured learning and players wanting a more conventional full-scale acoustic experience.
The GS Mini-e Koa Plus is smaller, more portable and fitted with the more advanced Expression System 2. It is the stronger choice when portability and premium appointments are the priorities.
Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus Versus A Full-Sized Acoustic
A larger acoustic guitar generally offers greater bass extension, acoustic headroom and a more traditional playing feel.
The GS Mini-e Koa Plus prioritises comfort, portability and immediate accessibility while still delivering a bold sound for its size. It is ideal for musicians who find larger bodies cumbersome or need an instrument that can travel easily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Taylor GS Mini-e Koa Plus suitable as a main guitar?
Yes. Although its dimensions are compact, its solid top, professional electronics and quality hardware make it capable of handling regular practice, recording and live performance.
Players who prefer a shorter scale may find it comfortable enough to use as their primary acoustic guitar.
Does koa sound different from spruce?
Yes. Koa generally produces a more focused midrange with natural compression and a controlled response.
Spruce tends to offer a broader dynamic range and a more immediate high-frequency attack, while koa provides a distinctive combination of clarity, punch and warmth.
Will the sound of the koa top change over time?
A solid koa soundboard can develop additional warmth and harmonic complexity as it is played.
The guitar should retain its clear and focused character while gradually gaining a richer and more open response.
Can it be connected directly to a PA system?
Yes. The Expression System 2 provides an active output suitable for connection to an acoustic amplifier, PA system, mixing desk or compatible recording interface using a standard instrument cable.
Is the shorter scale suitable for alternate tunings?
The GS Mini can be used for alternate tunings, but its short scale and factory medium-gauge strings should be considered when selecting tunings.
Moderately lowered tunings can work well, while very low tunings may require careful string selection and professional setup adjustment to maintain suitable tension.
Can lighter strings be fitted?
Lighter strings can be installed, but they will reduce overall tension and may affect volume, response and setup.
The factory-fitted medium-gauge set is selected to help the short-scale body produce a strong and balanced acoustic voice.
Is it suitable for fingerstyle playing?
Yes. The compact body, even response and articulate koa top work well for fingerpicked patterns and melodic arrangements.
Players accustomed to particularly wide fingerstyle necks should note that the 1-11/16-inch nut provides a more compact string spacing.
How should a solid-top guitar be stored?
Keep the guitar in its AeroCase when it is not being played and protect it from radiators, direct sunlight and rapid changes in temperature or humidity.
Stable indoor conditions help preserve the solid koa top and maintain consistent playability.
