Description

The DOD Rubberneck Analog Delay is a feature-packed BBD delay pedal combining warm analogue repeats with tap tempo, modulation, tone shaping, self-oscillation and unique real-time delay manipulation.

Offering up to 1.5 seconds of analogue delay, the Rubberneck covers everything from short slapback and rhythmic echoes to long atmospheric trails. Dedicated Rate and Depth controls add modulation, while Gain and Tone let you make the repeats cleaner, dirtier, brighter or darker.

Its defining Rubbernecking function lets you stretch or compress the delay time while playing, producing dramatic pitch bends and tape-style time manipulation. Add a momentary Regen function, effects loop, selectable delay trails and optional FS3X control, and the Rubberneck becomes an exceptionally flexible analogue delay for stage, studio and experimental use.

What Makes The DOD Rubberneck Special?

The Rubberneck combines traditional analogue delay character with performance features that go far beyond a basic three-knob delay.

Its BBD circuit delivers the darker, progressively degraded repeats associated with classic analogue delay, while dedicated modulation, Gain and Tone controls let you alter how those repeats evolve.

The real standout is the Rubbernecking system, which allows the delay time to be stretched or compressed momentarily under footswitch control for dramatic pitch-shifting effects.

Up To 1.5 Seconds Of Analog Delay

The main Time control covers approximately 30ms to 1000ms.

This gives you access to:

  • Short doubling

  • Rockabilly slapback

  • Rhythmic delay

  • Lead guitar echoes

  • Ambient repeats

  • Psychedelic delay

  • Experimental textures

Using Tap Tempo extends the available delay time to approximately 1.5 seconds.

That is unusually long for a fully analogue BBD delay and gives the Rubberneck enough range for more spacious atmospheric sounds.

Tap Tempo

The dedicated Tempo/Regen footswitch lets you set delay time by tapping the desired rhythm.

This is particularly useful live, where you can quickly match your repeats to a song without bending down to adjust the Time control.

Tap tempo can also be set while the effect is bypassed.

Three Tap Ratios

The Tap Ratio switch offers three rhythmic relationships:

Quarter Note

Produces a straightforward 1:1 relationship with the tapped tempo.

Dotted Eighth

Creates dotted-eighth rhythmic delay patterns, useful for repeating melodic and atmospheric parts.

Eighth Note

Halves the tapped interval for faster repeats.

These options make the Rubberneck much more useful for tempo-synchronised live playing.

Rubberneck Time Stretching

The feature that gives the pedal its name is Rubbernecking.

Press and hold the Effect footswitch and the delay time stretches or compresses until you release it.

Depending on the selected Rubberneck Rate, this can create:

  • Dive-bomb delay effects

  • Upward pitch sweeps

  • Downward pitch drops

  • Tape-machine-style speed changes

  • Warped ambient transitions

  • Experimental pitch effects

The dedicated Rubberneck Rate control determines how quickly the pitch-shifting transition occurs.

Momentary Regen & Self-Oscillation

The Regen Adjust control works as a second feedback setting.

Press and hold the Tempo/Regen footswitch and the pedal temporarily replaces the normal Repeats setting with the Regen value.

Set Regen high and you can instantly push the Rubberneck into runaway analogue delay oscillation.

Release the footswitch and the pedal returns to the normal Repeats setting.

This gives you controlled access to extreme feedback without needing to turn knobs during a performance.

Analog Delay Modulation

Dedicated Rate and Depth controls add modulation to the delay time.

At subtle settings this introduces gentle chorus-like movement to the repeats.

Increase the controls for more pronounced:

  • Warble

  • Vibrato-style movement

  • Pitch instability

  • Lo-fi delay textures

  • Psychedelic modulation

Turning Depth fully down disables the modulation.

Gain Control

The Gain control adjusts how hard the signal drives the BBD delay circuit.

Lower settings produce cleaner repeats.

Increase Gain for more:

  • Saturation

  • Harmonic content

  • Grit

  • Analogue distortion

  • Dirty delay character

This lets the Rubberneck move from relatively clean echoes to intentionally overdriven repeats.

Tone Control

The Tone control adjusts the brightness of the delay signal.

Use it to create:

  • Dark vintage-style repeats

  • Warm ambient trails

  • Brighter rhythmic delay

  • More defined echoes

  • Softer repeats behind distorted guitar

Because Tone affects the delayed signal rather than simply the dry guitar, it is particularly useful for making repeats sit naturally in a mix.

Feedback Effects Loop

A dedicated TRS Send / Return jack lets you place other pedals directly inside the delay feedback path.

Compatible effects might include:

  • Distortion

  • Fuzz

  • Phaser

  • Flanger

  • Ring modulation

  • Filter effects

  • Pitch effects

Because the inserted effect processes the repeats rather than necessarily affecting your dry signal, each regeneration can become progressively more unusual.

This is one of the Rubberneck's most powerful features for experimental sound design.

Selectable Delay Tails

The three-position Tails switch determines what happens when the delay is bypassed.

Tails Off

Delay repeats stop immediately when the pedal is bypassed.

This setting provides true hardwire bypass.

Tails On

Existing delay repeats continue naturally after the effect is switched off.

The dry signal uses a buffered path in this mode.

Tails On + No Dry

The dry signal is muted while the effect is active, while the delay repeats continue after bypass.

This is useful for more specialised wet-only and effects-loop applications.

Optional FS3X Footswitch Control

The Rubberneck includes an external footswitch input for the optional DigiTech FS3X.

With the FS3X connected, you can remotely control:

  • Rubbernecking

  • Modulation On / Off

  • Tap Tempo / Regen

This can make the pedal easier to control when positioned further back on a larger pedalboard.

FS3X footswitch sold separately.

Who Is It For?

The DOD Rubberneck is particularly well suited to:

  • Rock

  • Psychedelic rock

  • Ambient

  • Shoegaze

  • Post-rock

  • Indie

  • Alternative

  • Experimental music

  • Sound design

  • Lead guitar

  • Analogue delay enthusiasts

  • Players who use self-oscillation creatively

  • Musicians wanting tap tempo from a BBD delay

Why Choose An Analog BBD Delay?

Bucket-brigade analogue delays naturally change the sound of each repeat as it regenerates.

Repeats tend to become darker, softer and more coloured over time rather than remaining perfectly identical.

This means analogue delay often sits naturally behind the original guitar signal, particularly with overdrive and distortion.

The Rubberneck retains this traditional analogue character while adding many features more commonly associated with advanced digital delays.

How It Compares

DOD Rubberneck vs Basic Analog Delay

A conventional analogue delay may provide only Time, Repeats and Level.

The Rubberneck adds:

  • Tap tempo

  • Three tap ratios

  • Up to 1.5 seconds delay

  • Rate and Depth modulation

  • Gain and Tone controls

  • Rubberneck pitch manipulation

  • Momentary Regen

  • Delay tails

  • Feedback effects loop

  • External footswitch support

DOD Rubberneck vs DOD Drag

The DOD Drag is a more compact analogue delay with 750ms standard delay time and several specialised Friction-based time-warping effects.

The Rubberneck offers longer delay time, dedicated tap tempo, an effects loop, Regen control and more extensive hands-on delay shaping.

Rubberneck vs Digital Delay

Digital delays usually prioritise clean repeats and may offer presets or multiple delay algorithms.

The Rubberneck focuses on the natural degradation, saturation and instability of analogue BBD delay while still providing advanced performance control.
