Electro Harmonix Soul Food Transparent Overdrive Guitar Pedal
Description
The Electro-Harmonix Soul Food is an analogue transparent overdrive and clean boost pedal designed to add volume, clarity and natural-sounding drive without masking the character of your guitar or amplifier.
With generous output, responsive gain and boosted internal power rails for additional headroom, the Soul Food works equally well as an always-on tone enhancer, a low-gain overdrive or a powerful boost for pushing a valve amplifier into natural saturation.

Why Choose the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food?
Transparent, Natural-Sounding Overdrive
The Soul Food is designed to complement your existing sound rather than completely reshape it. Your guitar, pickups and amplifier remain recognisable, with additional warmth, definition and harmonic character added around them.
Clean Boost to Classic Overdrive
Turn the Drive control down and raise the Volume for a clear, powerful boost. Increase the Drive to move through light breakup, crunchy rhythm sounds and fuller classic overdrive.
As the Drive level increases, the pedal also introduces additional midrange presence, helping lead lines and rhythm parts remain audible within a busy mix.
Plenty of Output for Driving an Amplifier
The Soul Food offers enough output to push the input stage of a valve amplifier harder. This makes it ideal for players who want to create additional saturation from their amplifier rather than relying entirely on pedal-generated distortion.
Boosted Power Rails for Greater Headroom
Its boosted internal power rails provide increased headroom and definition. Clean boost settings remain clear and articulate, while driven sounds retain note separation and pick response.
Responsive to Your Playing
The pedal reacts naturally to changes in picking strength and guitar volume. Play lightly for cleaner articulation, dig in for more bite or reduce your guitar’s volume control to clean up the sound without switching the pedal off.
Selectable True or Buffered Bypass
An internal switch lets you choose between true bypass and buffered bypass operation.
True bypass provides a direct connection between the input and output when the effect is disengaged. Buffered bypass can help preserve clarity when using longer cable runs or larger pedalboards.
Why Choose a Transparent Overdrive Pedal?
A transparent overdrive is designed to enhance the sound of your existing equipment rather than imposing a heavily coloured EQ profile.
This makes the Soul Food particularly useful when you already like the basic sound of your guitar and amplifier but want more volume, sustain, presence or natural breakup. It can remain switched on as the foundation of your sound or be engaged when you need an additional level of gain.
Transparent overdrives are also highly effective for stacking. Placing the Soul Food before another drive pedal can tighten and strengthen its response, while positioning it afterwards can provide a noticeable volume lift for solos.
Who Is It For?
Beginners
The simple three-control layout makes it easy to understand how volume, gain and treble interact. It is an excellent introduction to both clean boosting and low-gain overdrive.
Intermediate Players
Players building their first larger pedalboard will appreciate its versatility, compact size and ability to work alongside other overdrive, distortion and fuzz pedals.
Advanced and Professional Players
Experienced musicians can use the Soul Food as an always-on tone shaper, a focused amplifier boost or a gain-stacking tool for adding definition and presence to complex pedalboard setups.

Adding light breakup without losing your guitar’s natural character
-
Pushing a valve amplifier into additional saturation
-
Creating an articulate blues or classic-rock lead sound
-

Players who move between single-coil and humbucker-equipped guitars
The Story Behind the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food
The Soul Food was developed to make the responsive, high-headroom character associated with highly sought-after transparent overdrive circuits available at a far more accessible price.
Electro-Harmonix combined a compact, road-ready enclosure with boosted power rails, straightforward controls and flexible bypass options. Released in 2013, it has become one of the company’s most recognisable overdrive pedals and a popular choice for players who want clarity, touch sensitivity and practical versatility.
How Does the Soul Food Compare?
Soul Food vs Mid-Focused Overdrive
A traditional mid-focused overdrive usually adds a noticeable midrange hump and reduces some low end. The Soul Food retains more of your guitar and amplifier’s original frequency balance, making it suitable for players who want a more open and natural response.
Soul Food vs a Dedicated Clean Boost
A clean boost primarily increases signal level. The Soul Food can provide a strong clean boost but also offers adjustable overdrive and tone shaping, making it more versatile within a compact pedalboard.
Soul Food vs High-Gain Distortion
The Soul Food focuses on clarity, dynamics and lower-gain drive rather than saturated modern distortion. It is better suited to boosting an amplifier, enhancing an existing drive sound or creating responsive blues and classic-rock tones.
Soul Food vs Fuzz
Fuzz pedals deliberately transform the guitar signal into a more compressed and heavily textured sound. The Soul Food keeps individual notes clearer and preserves more of the instrument’s original attack.
Using the Soul Food as an Amplifier Boost
For a clean or nearly clean boost, begin with the Drive control low, the Treble control at approximately 12 o’clock and the Volume raised above unity level.
This setting increases the signal reaching your amplifier while keeping pedal-generated clipping relatively low. With a valve amplifier, the additional level can push the preamp into natural breakup.
For a more pronounced solo sound, gradually increase the Drive and adjust the Treble control to suit the brightness of your guitar and amplifier. Humbuckers may benefit from slightly more treble, while brighter single-coil pickups may sound smoother with the control set below noon.
Looking for Advice?
Choosing the right overdrive often depends on your guitar, pickups, amplifier and the amount of gain you already use.
The Fair Deal Music team includes experienced musicians who can help you decide whether the Soul Food is right for an always-on boost, amplifier drive, solo lift or gain-stacking setup.

Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Electro-Harmonix Soul Food is an excellent choice for players who want a responsive overdrive without losing the identity of their guitar and amplifier. Its combination of clean boost capability, natural drive, useful tone control and selectable bypass makes it far more versatile than its simple layout suggests.
It is equally convincing as a first overdrive pedal, an always-on tone enhancer or a dependable boost within a professional pedalboard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food a clean boost or an overdrive?
It can perform both roles. Low Drive and higher Volume settings produce a clear boost, while increasing the Drive adds progressively more grit, midrange presence and overdrive.
Does the Soul Food change the natural sound of my guitar?
It is designed to preserve the core character of your guitar and amplifier. It adds gain, presence and harmonic colour without imposing the more pronounced EQ curve associated with many traditional overdrive pedals.
Can it push a valve amplifier into overdrive?
Yes. The Soul Food has plenty of output and can push the input of a valve amplifier harder, creating additional breakup and saturation from the amplifier itself.
Does it work with solid-state and digital amplifiers?
Yes. It can add boost and overdrive to valve, solid-state, modelling and digital amplifier setups. Its responsive character also makes it suitable for direct-recording rigs and amplifier simulation systems.
Can I use it with other drive pedals?
Yes. The Soul Food is particularly effective for gain stacking. Use it before another drive to add focus and attack, or afterwards to increase overall output for lead passages.
Is the Soul Food true bypass?
It offers both true bypass and buffered bypass. The mode is selected using a switch inside the pedal, with true bypass normally selected at the factory.
Where should it go in my pedalboard signal chain?
A common starting position is after tuners and filters but before modulation, delay and reverb. Its exact position among other drive pedals will depend on whether you want it to add gain, tighten another pedal or provide a final volume boost.
Is the Soul Food suitable for bass guitar?
It can be used with bass, but guitarists and bassists wanting greater control over the clean low-frequency signal should consider the Electro-Harmonix Bass Soul Food, which includes a clean blend control and bass-optimised signal path.
