Why Choose The 1989 Fender American Standard Stratocaster?
Genuine First-Generation American Standard Character
The American Standard Stratocaster was introduced in the late 1980s as Fender's modern interpretation of its most famous electric guitar.
Rather than simply recreating a vintage model, Fender retained the fundamental Stratocaster layout while introducing practical updates such as a flatter 9.5" fingerboard radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets, BiFlex truss rod and two-point tremolo bridge.
That makes a 1989 example particularly interesting for players who want an older Fender but prefer a playing specification that feels less traditionally vintage.
Alder Body
The first-generation American Standard Stratocaster used an alder body, a construction closely associated with the clear, balanced response expected from a classic Fender solid-body guitar.
For the player, the important point is versatility. This is the kind of guitar that can comfortably move from clean rhythm sounds into overdrive, modulation, ambient effects and more aggressive rock tones.
Maple Neck And Fingerboard
The maple neck and maple fingerboard give this Black Stratocaster a particularly clean, recognisable look.
Period American Standard models used a 25.5" scale, 9.5" radius and 22 medium-jumbo frets, offering a noticeably more contemporary feel than many vintage-specification Strats with smaller frets and rounder boards.
That specification remains attractive for players who want easy bending, comfortable lead playing and familiar Fender scale tension.
Three Single-Coil Stratocaster Pickups
The American Standard retained the classic SSS three-single-coil configuration and five-way selector.
The original period design used flat-pole pickups, with a reverse-wound/reverse-polarity middle pickup to provide hum-cancelling operation in the two combined pickup positions.
That gives you the broad tonal range that makes a Strat so useful: fuller neck sounds, crisp combined positions, clear middle-pickup tones and the sharper bridge sound required for cutting rhythm and lead parts.
TBX Tone Control
One of the more distinctive elements of this generation of American Standard Stratocaster was its TBX tone circuit.
The period control layout used a master volume, conventional neck-pickup tone control and TBX control covering the middle and bridge pickups. The system remained passive and was designed to expand the available tonal adjustment compared with a conventional tone control.
It is one of the details that separates this generation from both vintage-style Stratocasters and many later Fender models.
Two-Point American Standard Tremolo
Fender's two-point tremolo was a major feature of the American Standard redesign.
Instead of the traditional six-screw mounting arrangement, the American Standard bridge pivots on two points and uses solid block saddles.
For players, it offers a smoother, more modern take on the familiar Stratocaster vibrato system and is an important part of the late-'80s American Standard identity.
Classic Black Finish
Black is one of the most enduring Stratocaster finishes, and paired with maple it gives this guitar a particularly timeless Fender appearance.
It works equally well for players who favour traditional instruments and musicians building a more contemporary stage setup.
Genuine Age Rather Than Artificial Ageing
One attraction of a guitar from 1989 is that its age is genuine.
There is a significant difference between buying a modern guitar designed to recreate an older period and choosing an instrument that actually dates back more than three decades.
For players who enjoy the history behind their gear, that can make a pre-owned late-1980s Fender especially appealing.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
1989 American Standard Stratocaster vs Modern Fender American Professional II Stratocaster
A modern American Professional II is the better choice for somebody who wants current Fender specifications, a new instrument and contemporary refinements.
The 1989 American Standard is more appealing if you specifically want an older USA Fender with genuine period character and the specification that helped establish Fender's post-CBS American Standard era.
1989 American Standard Stratocaster vs Fender Player Stratocaster
A Fender Player-series Stratocaster offers a more accessible route into a Fender-branded instrument and makes excellent sense as a first serious Strat.
The 1989 American Standard is aimed at someone looking further up the ladder: an American-made, older Fender with provenance and a specification linked to an important era in Fender production.
American Standard Stratocaster vs American Vintage Stratocaster
An American Vintage-style Strat focuses more strongly on historic Fender specifications such as vintage-inspired hardware, neck dimensions and period-correct details.
The American Standard takes a different approach. Its 22 medium-jumbo frets, 9.5" radius and two-point tremolo are better suited to players wanting classic Fender sounds with a more modern playing platform.
1989 American Standard Stratocaster vs Strat Plus
The Strat Plus is another highly regarded Fender model from the same broad era but incorporated a different range of hardware and electronics.
The American Standard is the more straightforward choice for someone wanting the core USA Stratocaster formula without moving into the additional features associated with the Plus range.
Who Is It For?
Players Looking For An Older USA Fender
If the appeal of a Stratocaster goes beyond the specification sheet and you want an instrument with genuine history, a 1989 American Standard offers something a brand-new guitar cannot.
Blues And Rock Guitarists
The SSS Stratocaster layout is superb for players moving between cleaner neck-pickup sounds, pushed blues tones and brighter rock rhythm or lead sounds.
Funk, Soul And Pop Players
The Strat's combined pickup positions remain an excellent choice for clean, articulate rhythm guitar where clarity and attack are important.
Indie And Alternative Players
A Stratocaster responds particularly well to pedals, making it useful for chorus, delay, reverb, fuzz, overdrive and more experimental effects setups.
Studio Guitarists
Multiple pickup combinations give the Stratocaster plenty of flexibility when layering different guitar parts in a recording.
Players Upgrading From A More Affordable Strat-Style Guitar
If you already know that the Stratocaster format suits you, moving into an older American Standard can be a compelling way to step into a USA Fender with genuine history.

What Makes The First-Generation Fender American Standard Stratocaster Different?
The original American Standard Stratocaster represented Fender's attempt to modernise the Strat without losing what had made the design successful in the first place.
Introduced in the late 1980s, it combined the traditional double-cutaway body and three-single-coil layout with a number of changes aimed at contemporary players. These included a 22-fret neck, 9.5" fingerboard radius, medium-jumbo frets, BiFlex truss rod, Micro-Tilt neck adjustment and two-point tremolo system.
The result sits in an interesting position between vintage-style Fender instruments and today's modern Stratocasters.
It still looks and sounds unmistakably like a Strat, but the flatter radius and larger frets make lead playing and string bending particularly comfortable, while the revised tremolo and TBX-equipped electronics give the guitar its own late-'80s identity.
For anyone searching for a used Fender American Standard Stratocaster, 1980s Fender Strat, USA Fender Stratocaster or second-hand American Strat, this generation deserves serious consideration.

Story & Context: Fender American Standard Stratocaster
The first-generation American Standard Stratocaster emerged during an important rebuilding period for Fender.
The model was officially unveiled at the January 1987 NAMM show, after Fender's change of ownership in the mid-1980s. The aim was not simply to build another vintage reissue, but to update the established Stratocaster platform for contemporary players.
Fender retained the instrument's recognisable shape and three-pickup identity while introducing practical changes to the neck, tremolo system and electronics.
That makes a 1989 American Standard an interesting guitar historically as well as musically. It comes from the early years of a model line that would become central to Fender's USA production for many years.
This Black maple-neck example gives players the chance to own a Strat from that formative American Standard period while still having an instrument with a highly practical specification for modern playing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is special about a 1989 Fender American Standard Stratocaster?
The early American Standard represents Fender's late-1980s modernisation of the Stratocaster. Its 9.5" radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets, BiFlex truss rod and two-point tremolo made it more contemporary to play while retaining the traditional SSS Stratocaster format.
Is this Stratocaster suitable for blues and rock?
Yes. The combination of three single-coil pickups and five-way switching makes the Stratocaster particularly versatile for blues, classic rock, pop, funk, indie and other styles where clean definition and responsive overdriven tones are useful.
Is the 1989 American Standard vintage-spec?
Not in the strict sense. Although it is now an older guitar, the American Standard was deliberately designed with more contemporary features including a 9.5" radius, 22 medium-jumbo frets and two-point tremolo.
What does the TBX control do?
The original American Standard configuration used a TBX tone circuit for the middle and bridge pickups. It is a passive circuit designed to provide a broader range of tonal adjustment than a conventional tone pot.
Does this guitar require a battery?
No. The period American Standard electronics are passive, so no battery is required.
Is the 9.5" radius good for lead playing?
A 9.5" radius offers a useful balance between traditional Fender feel and more contemporary playability. Combined with medium-jumbo frets, it works particularly well for string bending, chord work and general-purpose lead playing.
Is this a good upgrade from a Squier or Fender Player Stratocaster?
For someone who already knows they like the Stratocaster format, an older American Standard can be a compelling upgrade, particularly if USA Fender production and genuine late-'80s character are important to you.
Will the guitar be set up before it leaves Fair Deal Music?
Yes. Fair Deal Music's pre-owned electric guitars are set up and checked before leaving the shop. As with any wooden instrument, temperature and humidity changes during transit can result in minor setup movement.
Can I request a closer look at this guitar?
Yes. For a unique pre-owned instrument such as this, the Request a Video Demo option is particularly useful if you'd like a closer look before purchasing.
