Description
Quick Product Summary
The Fender California Standard Monterey E in Natural Sapele is a comfortable mid-sized electro-acoustic guitar designed for players who want approachable playability, useful onboard electronics and unmistakable Fender styling at an accessible price.
This Natural Sapele version uses laminated sapele for the top, back and sides, giving the guitar a cohesive natural wood appearance alongside the durability and consistency of all-laminate construction. Its Monterey orchestra/auditorium body is more compact and balanced than a large dreadnought, making it particularly comfortable for seated playing, lessons, songwriting and everyday practice.
A smooth okoume “C”-shaped neck, walnut fingerboard, 25.5-inch scale and 12-inch radius provide familiar, straightforward acoustic playability. Fender's FE-A2 preamp adds volume and tone controls plus an integrated digital tuner, so the Monterey E can move easily from unplugged practice to amplification, recording or performance.
Finished in Natural Sapele with an ivory pickguard and binding, this is a strong choice for beginners, improving players, singer-songwriters and electric guitarists looking for an accessible first electro-acoustic.

Why Choose The Fender California Standard Monterey E?
Comfortable Orchestra-Style Body
The Monterey's mid-sized orchestra/auditorium body offers a comfortable alternative to a larger dreadnought. It is particularly well suited to players who want an acoustic that feels manageable when sitting down while still providing a full six-string acoustic playing experience.
All-Sapele Appearance
This specific version uses laminated sapele across the top, back and sides, creating a warm natural visual character that works particularly well with the ivory binding and pickguard.
Fender FE-A2 Electronics
The onboard FE-A2 system provides simple volume and tone controls plus an integrated tuner. That makes the Monterey E ready for acoustic amplifiers, PA systems, recording interfaces and other suitable amplified setups without needing an external soundhole pickup.
Familiar 25.5-Inch Scale
The 25.5-inch scale will feel particularly familiar to players coming from many Fender electric guitars. Combined with the “C”-shaped neck and 12-inch fingerboard radius, it creates an approachable transition from electric to acoustic.
Distinctive Fender Headstock
The Monterey E uses Fender's six-in-line Mustang-style headstock, giving it a visual identity that clearly separates the California Series from more conventionally styled acoustic guitars.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
Fender California Standard Monterey E vs California Standard Redondo CE
The California Standard Redondo CE uses a larger dreadnought-style body with a cutaway. It is the stronger choice for players who prefer a bigger acoustic body and easier upper-fret access. The Monterey E is better suited to players prioritising a more compact, balanced body shape and comfortable seated playing.
Fender California Standard Monterey E vs Malibu Player
The Malibu Player uses a smaller body and steps up to a solid spruce top with Fishman electronics. It is worth considering if a compact instrument and solid-top construction justify the additional investment. The Monterey E offers excellent value when straightforward electro-acoustic functionality and a mid-sized body are the priority.
Fender California Standard Monterey E vs CD-60SCE All-Mahogany
The CD-60SCE All-Mahogany is a larger dreadnought cutaway with a solid mahogany top and more traditional acoustic styling. Choose the CD-60SCE for a bigger body, solid top and expanded onboard EQ; choose the Monterey E for its more manageable dimensions, California Series styling and simpler controls.
Fender Monterey E vs A Full-Size Dreadnought
A dreadnought generally gives you a larger body and can suit players who want a strong, substantial strumming platform. The Monterey's orchestra/auditorium format is more compact and balanced, making it a particularly attractive option for fingerstyle, songwriting, home practice and players who simply find large acoustics cumbersome.
Who Is The Fender California Standard Monterey E For?
This electro-acoustic guitar is particularly well suited to:
-
Beginners buying their first acoustic guitar
-
Electric guitarists adding an acoustic to their setup
-
Singer-songwriters
-
Students taking guitar lessons
-
Home players
-
Players who find dreadnought bodies too large
-
Musicians wanting built-in amplification
-
Players looking for an onboard tuner
-
Casual recording
-
Open-mic and small performance setups
-
Strumming and fingerstyle players
-
Musicians looking for a practical everyday electro-acoustic
Its straightforward controls and resilient laminate construction also make it a sensible choice for an instrument that will be regularly played rather than treated as something overly precious.
Suitable Playing Styles & Applications
The California Standard Monterey E works well for strumming, fingerstyle, acoustic pop, folk, singer-songwriter material, country, indie acoustic music, lessons and general practice.
Its mid-sized body makes it especially useful for players who want a balanced all-round instrument rather than an acoustic designed primarily around maximum dreadnought projection.
The onboard electronics also expand its role considerably. Connect it to a suitable acoustic amplifier or PA for live use, or plug directly into an audio interface for simple home recording.
Sapele Top vs Spruce Top: Which Should You Choose?
The Natural Sapele Monterey E uses a laminated sapele top, while other versions of the Monterey E are available with laminated spruce tops.
Sapele gives this model a cohesive all-wood visual appearance and makes sense for players drawn to a naturally darker, understated acoustic aesthetic. A spruce-top version is the more traditional visual choice if you prefer the familiar light-coloured acoustic soundboard appearance.
Both versions retain the same fundamental Monterey body concept, scale length and FE-A2 electronics, so the Natural Sapele model is especially attractive when its all-sapele construction and appearance are what draw you to the instrument.
Compatibility And Practical Pairing Advice
Acoustic Amplifiers
The FE-A2 electronics allow the Monterey E to connect directly to a suitable acoustic guitar amplifier.
An acoustic amp is a particularly good choice if you want a clear amplified sound for home practice, rehearsals or small performances.
PA Systems
For live performance, the guitar can be connected to a suitable PA or mixer setup. A DI box can also be useful depending on the equipment and length of cable run involved.
Recording Interfaces
The onboard preamp makes the Monterey E easy to integrate into a home-recording setup through a suitable instrument or DI input.
You can also record the guitar acoustically with a microphone and blend that sound with the direct pickup signal for greater flexibility.
Strings
The factory specification uses phosphor bronze .011-.052 strings.
This is a relatively accessible acoustic string gauge and works well for general strumming and fingerstyle playing. Changing significantly to another gauge can alter neck relief and action, so a setup may be beneficial afterwards.
Cases And Gig Bags
A case or gig bag is not included with the Monterey E. If the guitar will regularly travel to lessons, rehearsals or performances, a correctly sized padded acoustic gig bag is a worthwhile addition.

Story & Context
Fender's California Series takes a different approach to acoustic guitar design by incorporating visual ideas more commonly associated with Fender electric instruments.
Rather than following a completely traditional acoustic template, models such as the Monterey use distinctive six-in-line headstocks and contemporary finishes to create an acoustic guitar that still feels recognisably Fender.
The Monterey occupies the mid-sized orchestra/auditorium position within the California Standard family. That gives it a different role from the larger Redondo models, prioritising comfort and a balanced physical feel rather than simply maximising body size.
The Natural Sapele version adds its own identity through the all-sapele body treatment and contrasting ivory appointments, making it a particularly cohesive and understated choice within the range.

Power Requirements
The Fender FE-A2 preamp and onboard tuner require battery power for amplified operation.
The guitar can still be played normally as an unplugged acoustic instrument without using its electronics.
Fender's current published product specification confirms a low-battery indicator but does not specify the replacement battery type in the model specification, so this has not been guessed or added.
Fair Deal Music Verdict 🎵
★★★★★ 5/5
The Fender California Standard Monterey E is a strong choice for somebody looking for an affordable electro-acoustic that feels comfortable, looks distinctive and already has the electronics required for amplification.
The biggest attraction is the overall package rather than one complicated feature. The mid-sized Monterey body is comfortable, the 25.5-inch “C”-shaped neck feels familiar, and the FE-A2 preamp keeps amplified operation simple.
The Natural Sapele version also has an especially cohesive appearance, with the sapele body, ivory binding and matching ivory pickguard giving it a character of its own within the California Standard range.
Best suited for: Beginners, improving players, singer-songwriters and electric guitarists wanting an accessible first electro-acoustic.
Customers usually upgrade from: Basic starter acoustics, non-electro acoustic guitars and entry-level classical or steel-string instruments.
Most commonly paired with: Acoustic amplifier, instrument cable, clip-on tuner, capo, picks, strap and padded acoustic gig bag.
Our tip: If comfort is one of your biggest concerns, compare the Monterey with a dreadnought before buying. The smaller orchestra-style body can make a significant difference when practising for longer periods.
Showroom feedback: The Monterey format feels noticeably less bulky than a traditional dreadnought, while the six-in-line Fender headstock makes it particularly familiar visually to players coming from electric guitar.
