Choosing the Right Protection: Soft Bags vs. Flight Cases

Every musician travels differently, and your case needs to match your schedule. We split our range into two main categories to help you decide what level of armour your instrument needs.

Keyboard Carry Cases (Soft Bags)

Portability is the priority here. If you transport your gear in the back of a car, handle your own equipment, or walk to local rehearsals, a keyboard carry case is the best tool for the job. These "soft" bags typically feature high-denier, water-resistant nylon and thick foam padding. They are much lighter than hard cases and often come with backpack straps, making them ideal for students and gigging musicians who need to move quickly.

Keyboard Hard Cases (Flight Cases)

Soft bags aren't designed for the cargo hold of a plane or the back of a packed equipment van. For that, you need a keyboard hard case. These are built from rigid materials like moulded polyethylene or plywood with aluminium reinforcements. They are designed to take a beating so your instrument doesn't have to. If you are stacking gear or touring internationally, this is the insurance policy your keyboard needs.

How to Get the Perfect Fit

Sizing up a keyboard isn't as straightforward as sizing a guitar. Manufacturers often use different chassis dimensions even for keys with the same note count.

  • 49 & 61 Note Cases: These usually fit synthesizers and MIDI controllers. Since these instruments are lighter, look for cases with shoulder straps to make load-ins easier.
  • 76 Note Cases: A common size for arranger keyboards and some workstations. Be careful here; 76-note boards can vary significantly in length, so checking internal dimensions is vital.
  • 88 Note Cases: Designed for stage pianos and full-size workstations. These instruments are heavy, so we highly recommend choosing a case with built-in wheels to save your back.

Expert Tip: Don't rely solely on the note count. Always measure the length, depth, and height of your specific model, especially if you have a synthesizer with raised control knobs or bulky pitch wheels.

Practical Features to Look For

There are a few quality-of-life features on our keyboard cases that make a huge difference during day-to-day use:

  • Customizable Interiors: Universal cases often include padded wedges or blocks that stick to the interior walls via Velcro. You can arrange these to create a tight, movement-free fit for your specific board.
  • External Storage: You rarely travel with just the instrument. Look for keyboard carry cases with generous outer pockets for your sustain pedal, power supply, cables, and sheet music.
  • Recessed Wheels: On heavier keyboard hard cases, look for wheels that are recessed into the body of the case rather than bolted on the outside. This protects them from being snapped off during rough handling in transit.

Brand Compatibility

We stock protection for the world's leading instrument brands. If you play a Nord, Yamaha, Roland, Korg, or Casio, we have a solution to match. If you have a vintage synth or a unique board and aren't sure which keyboard case is the right match, don't guess. Measure your gear and get in touch with us. We’ll help you find the snug, secure fit your instrument requires.
