What Makes The Dirt Transmitter Special?

The Dirt Transmitter is one of the earliest fuzz designs in the EarthQuaker Devices catalogue.

Its circuit takes inspiration from the classic Fuzz Face concept but uses unusual low-gain silicon transistors. These offer some of the warmth associated with germanium fuzz while retaining the gritty top end and stronger midrange presence of silicon.

The result is a fuzz that can feel thick and vintage at one setting, then become sharp, aggressive and heavily gated with a quick turn of the Bias control.

Bias Control – From Thick To Gated Fuzz

The Bias control is the heart of the Dirt Transmitter.

Turned fully clockwise, the circuit is properly biased and produces its fullest, most natural fuzz response.

As you turn the Bias anticlockwise, the voltage reaching the transistors is reduced. This creates increasingly starved, sputtering and gated fuzz textures.

Rancho de la Luna Limited Edition

This special edition was created around EarthQuaker Devices founder Jamie Stillman's recording sessions at Rancho de la Luna in Joshua Tree, California.

During sessions celebrating the studio's 30th anniversary, Stillman used the Dirt Transmitter extensively alongside studio owner, guitarist and producer Dave Catching.

Catching is closely associated with the desert-rock scene and has worked with bands including Eagles of Death Metal and Queens of the Stone Age.

Following those sessions, the Dirt Transmitter was chosen for a special Rancho de la Luna release, complete with distinctive artwork from artist Mike Egan.

EarthQuaker Devices now lists the Rancho de la Luna Dirt Transmitter as no longer in production, adding extra appeal for players and collectors looking for discontinued EQD pedals.
