Description

The EarthQuaker Devices Time Shadows V2 Subharmonic Multi-Delay Resonator is an experimental delay and sound-design pedal created in collaboration with Death By Audio.

Combining pitch shifting, sub-octave processing, multi-delay effects, resonant filtering and digital distortion, Time Shadows V2 goes far beyond a conventional delay pedal. Three radically different modes provide everything from filtered subharmonic repeats to rising and falling pitch-shifted delays and metallic resonant textures.

With six user presets and assignable expression control, it is an exceptional creative tool for guitar, bass, synthesiser, drum machines and studio sound design.

What Makes The Time Shadows V2 Special?

Time Shadows was created through a collaboration between EarthQuaker Devices and Death By Audio, bringing together two manufacturers known for unconventional and highly creative effects.

V2 significantly expands the original concept with a new third mode, six preset locations and assignable expression control.

Rather than simply repeating your original signal, Time Shadows can distort, pitch-shift, filter and transform each repeat, producing sounds that sit somewhere between a delay, octave pedal, resonant filter and synthesiser-style effect.

Three Distinct Modes

EQD Mode – Subharmonic Filter Delay

EarthQuaker Devices' mode combines:

  • Digital distortion
  • Polyphonic sub-octave
  • Delay
  • Resonant envelope-controlled low-pass filtering

The result ranges from deep subharmonic repeats to aggressive filtered textures and unusual synth-like sounds.

!¡ Mode – Pitch-Warping Dual Delay

The centre mode uses a dual-delay system where each regeneration shifts simultaneously up and down in pitch.

Repeats become increasingly transformed as they regenerate, producing cascading, pitch-warped textures ideal for experimental leads, ambient passages and unusual rhythmic effects.

DBA Mode – Multi-Delay Resonating Filter

The Death By Audio mode combines multiple delays with resonant filtering.

It can move from bright, crystalline repeats to darker metallic echoes, comb-filtered textures and cavernous experimental sounds.

Six User Presets

Time Shadows V2 provides six preset slots for storing favourite sounds.

Presets save:

  • Time
  • Span
  • Filter
  • Selected Mode
  • Expression pedal assignment

This makes it much easier to use Time Shadows during live performances, where completely different sounds can be recalled without manually recreating every control position.

The pedal can operate in Live Mode for direct knob control or Preset Mode for recalling stored sounds.

Assignable Expression Control

Connect a compatible TRS expression pedal and assign it to:

  • Time
  • Span
  • Filter

This allows you to manipulate key parameters while playing and turns the Time Shadows V2 into an even more expressive performance tool.

Simple Three-Knob Control

Time

Controls the delay time.

Its exact effect changes depending on which of the three modes is selected.

Span

Controls the intensity and behaviour of the repeats, allowing sounds to move from restrained processing to dense, evolving textures.

Filter

Filter performs different functions in each mode.

In EQD mode it controls the envelope and delay input filtering. In DBA mode it changes the resonant filter and delay structure, while in the centre !¡ mode it controls the effect mix.

Who Is It For?

The Time Shadows V2 is ideal for musicians who want an experimental effects pedal rather than a conventional delay.

It is particularly suited to:

  • Experimental guitar
  • Ambient music
  • Shoegaze
  • Noise rock
  • Psychedelic music
  • Post-rock
  • Alternative
  • Electronic music
  • Bass processing
  • Synthesiser processing
  • Drum machines
  • Studio sound design
  • Film and soundtrack work

Why Choose An Experimental Multi-Delay?

A conventional digital delay generally creates clean repetitions of your original signal.

Time Shadows V2 deliberately changes those repetitions.

Pitch shifting, sub-octaves, filtering, distortion and resonant processing allow the repeats to evolve into completely different sounds as they regenerate.

For players who already own a straightforward delay or reverb pedal, Time Shadows adds a very different creative option to the pedalboard.

How It Compares

Time Shadows V2 vs Conventional Digital Delay

A standard digital delay is designed for clean echoes, rhythmic repeats and traditional ambience.

Time Shadows V2 is designed for sound manipulation, adding pitch shifting, subharmonics, distortion and resonant filtering.

Choose a normal delay for predictable repeats; choose Time Shadows when you want more experimental results.

Time Shadows V2 vs EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2

The Avalanche Run V2 focuses on stereo delay and reverb with tap tempo, reverse delay, swell effects and atmospheric ambience.

Time Shadows V2 is considerably more experimental, concentrating on pitch shifting, sub-octave processing and resonant filtering.

Time Shadows V2 vs Original Time Shadows

The original Time Shadows was released in 2020 as a limited run of 1,000 pedals.

V2 expands the concept with:

  • Three processing modes
  • New !¡ dual pitch-shifting delay
  • Six preset locations
  • Assignable expression control
  • Live and Preset operating modes

FAQs

What does the EarthQuaker Devices Time Shadows V2 do?

It combines delay with pitch shifting, sub-octave processing, resonant filtering and digital distortion across three very different modes.

Who designed the Time Shadows?

Time Shadows is a collaboration between EarthQuaker Devices and Death By Audio.

How many modes does Time Shadows V2 have?

It has three processing modes: EQD, !¡ and DBA.

What does EQD mode do?

EQD mode combines digital distortion, polyphonic sub-octave processing, delay and an envelope-controlled resonant low-pass filter.

What does the !¡ mode do?

It uses dual delays that simultaneously shift upwards and downwards in pitch with each regeneration.

What does DBA mode do?

The Death By Audio mode combines multiple delay lines with resonant filtering to create metallic, crystalline and cavernous textures.

Does Time Shadows V2 have presets?

Yes. It provides six user preset slots.

What can the presets save?

They can store the three control positions, selected mode and expression-pedal assignment.

Can I connect an expression pedal?

Yes. A compatible TRS expression pedal can control Time, Span or Filter.

Can it be used with bass or synthesiser?

Yes. Its experimental processing makes it useful for guitar, bass, synthesiser, drum machines and studio sources.

Is Time Shadows V2 a normal delay pedal?

Not really. Delay is central to the design, but the pedal is intended primarily for experimental pitch, filtering and sound manipulation.

Does it have true bypass?

Yes. It uses relay-based true bypass with EarthQuaker Devices Flexi-Switch® technology.

What power supply does it require?

It requires a 9V DC centre-negative power supply and draws approximately 75mA.

Is a power supply included?

No. A suitable power supply is not included.
