Orange Kongpressor Analogue Compression Pedal
Pairs well with
Description
The Orange Kongpressor Analogue Compression Pedal brings studio-inspired dynamic control to the pedalboard while retaining the natural attack, character and responsiveness of your guitar.
Built around a Class A VCA compression circuit, the Kongpressor can move from gentle dynamic smoothing to more obvious sustain and compression without forcing every player into the same heavily squashed sound. Dedicated Attack and Release controls give you much greater control than a basic two-knob compressor, while the unusual Chime control lets you restore presence and sparkle to compressed tones.
Add up to 12dB of clean boost, an internal charge pump for increased operating headroom and a transparent buffered bypass, and the Kongpressor becomes useful as much more than an occasional effect. It can work as an always-on tone enhancer, clean boost, sustain pedal or precision dynamics tool for clean, driven and effects-heavy rigs.

Orange Kongpressor Analogue Compression Pedal
Why Choose The Orange Kongpressor?
More Control Than A Basic Compressor
Many guitar compressors give you little more than compression and output controls. The Kongpressor adds dedicated Attack and Release adjustment, allowing you to determine how quickly compression reacts and how naturally the signal returns after each note.
Smooth Compression Without Killing Your Dynamics
The Class A VCA circuit is designed to manage peaks and increase sustain while keeping your playing expressive. Used subtly, it can even out a clean sound without making it obviously compressed; turn the Squash control higher and the effect becomes much more pronounced.
Up To 12dB Of Clean Boost
The Volume stage offers up to +12dB of clean boost, letting the Kongpressor increase level as well as control dynamics. This is useful for pushing an amplifier, lifting lead parts or balancing the perceived volume after heavier compression.
Chime Control Adds Back Clarity
Compression can sometimes make a guitar feel darker or less immediate. Orange's Chime control gives you direct control over high-frequency presence, helping bring back sparkle, definition and pick attack when required.
Higher Internal Headroom
An internal charge pump raises the operating voltage to provide increased headroom. The practical result is a cleaner, more open response, particularly when using hotter pickups, stronger input signals or more demanding compression settings.
Orange Kongpressor Compared With Popular Alternatives
Orange Kongpressor vs MXR Dyna Comp
The Dyna Comp is a classic choice for straightforward, obvious guitar compression with an intentionally simple control layout. The Kongpressor gives you substantially more control over Attack, Release and high-frequency response, making it better suited to players who want to fine-tune how the compressor reacts.
Orange Kongpressor vs Keeley Compressor Plus
The Keeley Compressor Plus is a versatile pedal with easy blend-based compression control. The Kongpressor takes a different approach, giving you independent Attack and Release controls alongside its Chime circuit for players who want more detailed envelope shaping.
Orange Kongpressor vs Boss CP-1X
The Boss CP-1X offers sophisticated compression designed to respond automatically across different frequencies and playing styles. The Kongpressor is the stronger choice for players who specifically want an analogue control experience where Attack, Release and tonal character can be shaped manually.
Orange Kongpressor vs A Clean Boost Pedal
A dedicated clean boost is useful when your only goal is increasing level. The Kongpressor can provide up to 12dB of boost while simultaneously controlling dynamics and sustain, making it more versatile when pedalboard space is limited.
Who Is The Orange Kongpressor For?
The Kongpressor is ideal for guitarists who want compression to enhance their playing rather than dominate it.
It is especially well suited to:
-
Clean electric guitar players
-
Funk and rhythmic guitar styles
-
Country players wanting snap and sustain
-
Blues guitarists looking for smoother lead dynamics
-
Rock players wanting longer sustain

Suitable Genres And Uses
Funk: Fast, controlled compression can even out rhythmic picking while retaining the attack needed for clean chord work.
Country: The Kongpressor can produce the snap, consistency and sustain associated with compressed country guitar while its Attack control lets you preserve the initial pick transient.
Blues: More subtle settings help smooth lead passages and extend sustain without turning the sound into an obviously processed effect.
Rock: Used before an overdrive or amplifier gain stage, compression can increase sustain and produce a more consistent signal feeding the rest of the rig.
Clean ambient guitar: Compression helps quiet notes remain present beneath delay and reverb, particularly when building layered or atmospheric sounds.
Studio work: Independent Attack and Release controls provide considerably more precision than basic stompbox compressors when recording clean and lightly driven guitar parts.
What Do Attack And Release Controls Do On A Compressor?
Attack determines how quickly the compressor reacts after you play a note. A faster setting clamps down on the initial transient more quickly, producing a smoother and more controlled response. A slower attack allows more of the original pick or finger attack through before compression takes effect.
Release determines how quickly the compression lets go afterwards. Adjusting the two together lets you move between subtle dynamic control, pronounced sustain and more percussive compressed sounds. This level of control is one of the main reasons the Kongpressor can work across several very different playing styles.
Where Should A Compressor Go On Your Pedalboard?
For most conventional setups, the Kongpressor works well near the beginning of the signal chain, after the guitar and before overdrive or distortion. This allows it to control the instrument's dynamics before the signal reaches the gain pedals.
There are no absolute rules, however. Placing compression after a drive pedal creates a different response, while using the Kongpressor primarily as a boost may influence where you prefer it in the chain. Experimenting with placement is worthwhile if your pedalboard contains several gain stages.
Story & Context
Orange is best known for amplifiers, but its effects pedals follow much the same philosophy: distinctive circuits, practical controls and enough character to give each pedal a clear purpose.
The Kongpressor applies that approach to one of the most useful but sometimes misunderstood guitar effects. Instead of reducing compression to a simple one-control effect, Orange provides dedicated adjustment over the envelope and tonal response.
That makes the Kongpressor particularly useful for players who understand what they want from compression but still prefer the immediate feel of an analogue stompbox rather than menus or digital editing.
Compatibility & Recommended Pairings
Electric Guitars
The Kongpressor works with conventional electric guitar signals and can be used with both single-coil and humbucker-equipped instruments.
The Chime control is particularly useful for matching the compressor to guitars with different natural high-frequency responses.
Overdrive And Distortion
Running the Kongpressor before overdrive can produce a more consistent signal and greater sustain. Lower compression settings can also help push drive pedals more evenly without making the dynamics feel excessively restricted.
Clean Amplifiers
A clean amplifier is an excellent platform for hearing the Kongpressor's full range, from subtle smoothing through to more obvious compressed rhythm and lead sounds.
Delay And Reverb
Compression before ambient effects can help quieter notes remain present in delay repeats and reverberant textures, making it useful for clean, ambient and atmospheric playing.

Power Requirements
The Orange Kongpressor can operate from a standard 9V battery or a suitable 9–12V DC power supply.
Maximum current draw is 35mA.
The pedal's internal charge-pump circuit increases the internal operating voltage to provide additional headroom, so you do not need to supply 18V externally to gain the benefit of the higher-voltage internal design.
Always use a correctly specified pedal power supply and confirm the required polarity before connecting external power.
Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The Orange Kongpressor is an excellent compressor for players who have outgrown basic two-knob designs and want greater control without turning their pedalboard into a studio engineering exercise.
Its biggest advantage is the combination of Squash, Attack and Release controls, which allows compression to be shaped around your playing rather than simply switched between mild and heavy. The Chime control is equally useful, particularly when heavier compression begins to soften the top end.
Add up to 12dB of clean boost and the Kongpressor becomes useful even for players who only need obvious compression occasionally.
Best suited for: Guitarists wanting detailed, musical compression for clean tones, rhythm playing and sustained leads.
Main benefit: Precise dynamic control while retaining natural pick response and tonal clarity.
Value proposition: Combines detailed compression, tone shaping and a substantial clean boost in one analogue pedal.
Standout feature: Independent Attack and Release controls combined with the Chime high-frequency adjustment.
Customers usually upgrade from: Basic two-knob compressor pedals when they want finer control over sustain, transient response and overall feel.
Most commonly paired with: Overdrive pedals, clean amplifiers, delay and reverb effects and a quality regulated pedalboard power supply.
Our tip: Don't begin with the Squash control turned high. Start with moderate compression, set Attack so the initial pick response still feels natural, then use Release to determine how long the compression remains active. Finally, use Chime to restore exactly as much high-end definition as you need.
Showroom feedback: The Kongpressor particularly suits players who say they normally dislike compressors because they make the guitar feel flat. The Attack, Release and Chime controls give you enough adjustment to keep the sound lively while still benefiting from increased consistency and sustain.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Orange Kongpressor do?
The Kongpressor controls the dynamic range of your guitar signal, reducing larger peaks while allowing quieter parts to become more consistent. It can also increase sustain, reshape the attack of each note and provide up to 12dB of clean boost.
Is the Kongpressor suitable as an always-on pedal?
Yes. Subtle settings can smooth the dynamics and add consistency without producing an obviously compressed sound, making it well suited to always-on use.
Can the Kongpressor be used as a clean boost?
Yes. The Volume control can provide up to approximately 12dB of clean boost, allowing you to increase signal level while using as much or as little compression as required.
What does the Squash control do?
Squash determines the amount of compression applied. Lower settings provide gentler dynamic control, while higher settings create more noticeable compression and sustain.
What does the Chime control do?
Chime shapes the upper-frequency response, helping restore sparkle and presence or brighten a naturally darker guitar and amplifier combination.
Is the Kongpressor good for humbuckers?
Yes. Its additional headroom and Chime control make it easy to adapt to stronger and darker humbucker signals as well as brighter single-coil pickups.
Can I use the Kongpressor with bass guitar?
Its high-headroom analogue design can work with bass signals, although the final result will depend on the instrument, playing style and amount of compression required.
Does it need an 18V power supply?
No. The internal charge pump raises the operating voltage internally. The pedal itself can be powered from a 9V battery or suitable 9–12V DC external supply.
Where should I place it before my overdrive?
For traditional compression behaviour, place the Kongpressor before your overdrive or distortion pedals. This lets it shape the dynamics of the guitar before the signal reaches the gain stage.
Final Buying Advice
The Orange Kongpressor Analogue Compression Pedal is a strong choice for guitarists who want compression to feel like an enhancement rather than an effect imposed on top of their playing.
Its Class A VCA circuit, Squash control, independent Attack and Release adjustment, Chime tone shaping and 12dB clean boost provide considerably more control than a basic compressor while retaining the immediate simplicity of a traditional analogue stompbox.
Whether you need tighter clean rhythm parts, longer lead sustain, more consistent fingerpicked passages or a subtle always-on tone enhancer, the Kongpressor gives you the tools to shape dynamics without unnecessarily complicating your pedalboard.
