Yamaha CP73 Stage Piano
Description
INTRODUCTION
The Yamaha CP73 Stage Piano is a professional 73-note performance keyboard designed for gigging musicians who want premium acoustic and electric piano sounds, immediate hands-on control and a compact weighted keyboard that is easy to transport.
At the heart of the CP73 is Yamaha’s:
73-note BHS – Balanced Hammer Standard keyboard
with matt black keytops.
Unlike a conventional 88-note graded piano action, the CP73 uses a balanced hammer design created specifically to give players a responsive feel across acoustic piano, electric piano, organ, synth and other keyboard sounds.
Its unusual E-to-E 73-note range is particularly practical for band musicians, offering substantially more playing range than a 61-note keyboard while keeping the instrument considerably shorter and lighter than a conventional 88-note stage piano.
The CP73 combines that portable action with Yamaha’s extensive professional stage-piano sound library, including:
-
Yamaha CFX2 Concert Grand
-
Yamaha CFX
-
Bösendorfer Imperial 290
-
Yamaha S700

-
Brass
-

-

-

-

Its front panel is deliberately designed around direct control.
Rather than forcing performers through layers of menus, the CP73 divides its sound architecture into three straightforward sections:
PIANO
E.PIANO
SUB
Each section has dedicated controls, allowing sounds to be selected, layered, split and processed quickly during a performance.
With professional balanced XLR outputs, standard jack outputs, audio inputs, MIDI, USB Audio/MIDI and extensive pedal connectivity, the CP73 is designed to sit at the centre of a serious live or studio keyboard rig.
And at only:
13.1kg
it remains highly portable for a professional hammer-action stage piano.

73-NOTE BALANCED HAMMER STANDARD ACTION
One of the CP73’s defining features is its:
73-note Balanced Hammer Standard – BHS keyboard.
The CP73 was not designed simply by taking keys away from an 88-note stage piano.
Yamaha developed its action specifically around the requirements of musicians who prioritise:
-
Portability
-
Electric piano performance
-
Stage use
-
Multi-keyboard rigs
-
Fast response
-
Versatility across different sound types
Unlike a graded hammer action, where the resistance changes progressively from bass to treble, the CP73 uses a:
Balanced hammer action.
This makes the response consistent across the keyboard and particularly effective for electric piano playing.
E-TO-E KEYBOARD RANGE
The CP73 uses an unusual:
E-to-E 73-note range.
This is particularly useful in a band environment.
It gives players more range than a conventional 61-note keyboard while avoiding the additional width and weight of an 88-note instrument.
For musicians working alongside guitar and bass, the E-to-E layout can also feel particularly natural within typical band arrangements.
MATT BLACK KEYTOPS
The CP73 features:
Matt black keytops.
The matt surface provides a secure tactile feel and complements the instrument’s performance-focused BHS action.
AWM2 TONE GENERATION
The CP73 uses Yamaha’s:
AWM2 – Advanced Wave Memory 2
tone-generation technology.
Yamaha combines high-quality sampled instruments with dedicated processing and effects to reproduce a broad selection of acoustic and electronic keyboard sounds.
129 VOICES
With the current CP operating system, the CP73 provides:
129 Voices
divided into:
-
18 Piano Voices
-
19 E.Piano Voices
-
92 Sub Voices
This expanded library gives the CP73 substantially more versatility than the original launch specification.
YAMAHA CFX2 CONCERT GRAND
Current CP software adds Yamaha’s:
CFX2 Concert Grand Piano Voice.
Based on Yamaha’s flagship concert grand, CFX2 provides increased expression, enhanced resonance and a wider dynamic range.
It joins the CP’s already extensive collection of premium acoustic piano Voices.
YAMAHA CFX
The CP73 also includes the original:
Yamaha CFX Concert Grand
Voice.
The CFX character combines:
-
Powerful bass
-
Clear treble
-
Strong projection
-
Wide dynamic range
making it suitable for both exposed solo piano passages and full-band performance.
BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL 290
The CP73 includes the sound of the:
Bösendorfer Imperial 290.
Its rich Viennese tonal character provides a distinctly different alternative to Yamaha’s concert grands.
Current CP software also includes Yamaha’s refined version of this Voice, with improvements to tonal balance, note clarity and consistency.
MULTIPLE YAMAHA GRAND PIANOS
The CP73’s acoustic grand collection extends beyond the CFX.
It includes instruments based on:
-
Yamaha CFX2
-
Yamaha CFX
-
Yamaha S700
-
Yamaha CF3
-
Yamaha C7
-
Yamaha C3
-
Bösendorfer Imperial 290
This gives performers a range of grand-piano characters rather than a single flagship sound.
YAMAHA U1 UPRIGHT
The CP73 includes a sampled:
Yamaha U1 Upright Piano.
Its more intimate and characterful upright sound can work particularly well for:
-
Pop
-
Indie
-
Singer-songwriter material
-
Studio recording
-
Vintage-flavoured arrangements
YAMAHA SU7 UPRIGHT
Also available is Yamaha’s premium:
SU7 Upright Piano.
This provides another upright character with a rich and resonant tonal response.
FELT PIANO
The CP73 includes Yamaha’s:
Felt Piano
Voice.
Designed to produce a softer, intimate piano character, it is particularly useful for contemporary production, atmospheric arrangements and exposed piano parts.
ELECTRIC PIANOS
Electric piano is one of the CP73’s strongest areas.
The library includes multiple vintage-inspired instruments covering:
-
Tine electric pianos
-
Reed electric pianos
-
Electric grands
-
FM electric pianos
-
Clavi sounds
The combination of the BHS action and dedicated E.Piano controls makes the CP73 particularly attractive to players whose live work relies heavily on electric piano sounds.
YAMAHA CP80
The CP73 includes a recreation of Yamaha’s legendary:
CP80 Electric Grand Piano.
The original CP80 was designed to provide a piano sound capable of cutting through a live band.
Its distinctive amplified character remains useful for:
-
Rock
-
Pop
-
Fusion
-
Funk
-
Live band arrangements
VINTAGE TINE ELECTRIC PIANOS
The CP73 includes multiple carefully sampled vintage tine electric pianos with different tonal personalities.
These range from:
-
Warm
-
Smooth
-
Studio-style
through to:
-
Bright
-
Aggressive
-
Barking
-
Funk-oriented
electric piano characters.
REED ELECTRIC PIANOS
Multiple reed-style electric piano Voices are also included.
These offer another classic keyboard sound suited to:
-
Soul
-
Funk
-
Rock
-
Pop
-
R&B
-
Vintage-inspired production
FM ELECTRIC PIANOS
The CP73 also provides FM-based electric piano sounds for the bright, glassy digital piano character associated with classic Yamaha FM instruments.
THREE DEDICATED SOUND SECTIONS
The CP73’s front panel is organised around three main sections:
PIANO
For acoustic piano sounds.
E.PIANO
For electric piano and related keyboard sounds.
SUB
For the wider sound library including:
-
Organs
-
Strings
-
Pads
-
Synths
-
Brass
-
Bass
-
Guitars
-
Other instrumental sounds
Each section has dedicated controls.
This makes it possible to build sophisticated performance setups without repeatedly navigating menus.
SPLITS & LAYERS
The three-section architecture makes it straightforward to create:
-
Piano + strings
-
Piano + pad
-
Electric piano + pad
-
Piano + bass split
-
Electric piano + synth
-
Organ + piano
-
Three-Part layers
The controls are designed around quick live operation.
DIRECT ONE-TO-ONE INTERFACE
The CP73 is deliberately built around:
Direct, immediate control.
Dedicated switches, knobs and controls allow the performer to change sounds and effects directly from the front panel.
This is particularly valuable on stage, where fast adjustments are often more useful than deep menu-driven programming.
PIANO EFFECTS
The Piano section provides dedicated effect processing including:
-
Damper Resonance
-
Compressor
-
Distortion
-
Drive
-
Chorus
This allows acoustic piano sounds to be shaped for different performance environments.
ELECTRIC PIANO EFFECTS
The E.Piano section has an especially extensive effects architecture.
Available processing includes:
-
Drive
-
Auto Pan
-
Tremolo
-
Ring Modulator
-
Touch Wah
-
Pedal Wah
-
Compressor
-
Chorus
-
Flanger
-
Phaser
These effects are particularly important for recreating classic amplified electric-piano sounds.
SUB SECTION EFFECTS
The Sub section provides effects including:
-
Chorus / Flanger
-
Rotary Speaker
-
Tremolo
-
Distortion
These can be used to add movement and character to organs, synths and other sounds.
MASTER DELAY
The current CP specification provides:
Three Delay types:
-
Analog
-
Digital
-
Tempo
These are controlled from the master section.
MASTER REVERB
A dedicated:
Hall Reverb
provides overall ambience.
3-BAND MASTER EQ
The CP73 includes a:
3-band Master EQ
with:
Sweepable Mid.
This is particularly useful when adapting the keyboard to:
-
Different PA systems
-
Venues
-
Monitors
-
Recording environments
without needing to edit individual sounds.
SEAMLESS SOUND SWITCHING
The CP architecture supports:
Seamless Sound Switching.
This allows performers to move between Live Set Sounds without abruptly cutting off sustained notes from the previous sound.
For live performance, this can make transitions between songs or sections considerably smoother.
320 LIVE SET SOUNDS
The current CP73 provides:
320 Live Set Sound locations
including:
128 preset Live Set Sounds.
A Live Set Sound can store a complete performance configuration for fast recall.
This can include:
-
Voice selections
-
Splits
-
Layers
-
Effects
-
Controller assignments
-
Other performance settings
For gigging musicians, Live Sets make it practical to organise complete song-specific setups.
BALANCED XLR OUTPUTS
The CP73 provides professional:
Balanced XLR L/R outputs.
These are especially useful for connecting directly to:
-
Professional PA systems
-
Stage boxes
-
Mixing consoles
-
Audio interfaces
-
Recording equipment
Balanced outputs are particularly valuable where longer cable runs are required.
STANDARD JACK OUTPUTS
Alongside the XLR connections are:
-

R
6.3mm unbalanced outputs.
These are useful for:
-
Keyboard amplifiers
-
Powered monitors
-
Audio interfaces

ALUMINIUM CONSTRUCTION
Yamaha designed the CP73 around a lightweight but durable:
Aluminium body.
This helps the instrument achieve its low weight while maintaining the rigidity required for professional transport and stage use.
NO BUILT-IN SPEAKERS

not
have built-in speakers.
It is a professional stage instrument designed to connect to:
-
PA systems
-
Powered monitors
-
Keyboard amplifiers

This is an important distinction from Yamaha’s CK73-style concept — the CP Series prioritises dedicated professional stage-piano performance rather than self-contained portable amplification.

DIMENSIONS & WEIGHT
The Yamaha CP73 measures approximately:
Width: 1,086mm
Height: 145mm
Depth: 355mm
Weight: 13.1kg
For a professional hammer-action stage piano, those dimensions make the CP73 exceptionally practical for regular transport.
Its 73-note format is:
-
Shorter than a conventional 88-note stage piano
-
Easier to fit into vehicles
-
Easier to position on crowded stages
-
Easier to incorporate into multi-keyboard rigs
while still providing substantially more range than a 61-note keyboard.
POWER REQUIREMENTS
The CP73 connects directly to AC mains power through its:
AC IN
connection.
It does not require an external DC power adaptor.
Yamaha specifies standby power consumption of approximately:
0.3W.
🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★
Best suited for: Gigging keyboardists, electric-piano players and professional stage musicians who want premium Yamaha piano sounds and hammer action without the size and weight of a full 88-note stage piano.
Likely upgrade path: Players moving from lightweight performance keyboards, older stage pianos or 61-note synths who want a more piano-focused professional instrument while retaining portability.
Useful pairings: Yamaha SC-CP73 soft case, expression pedal, additional foot controller, sturdy keyboard stand and professional stage monitoring.
Our tip: The CP73 makes most sense when you understand why Yamaha chose 73 keys. It is not intended to be a cut-down CP88. The balanced hammer action, E-to-E range and 13.1kg weight are specifically aimed at players who want a responsive electric-piano-friendly action that is considerably easier to transport than a premium 88-note stage piano.
FDM view: The CP73 is an excellent example of a professional instrument being designed around the realities of gigging. Its acoustic pianos are excellent, but the combination of BHS action, vintage electric pianos, immediate effects and direct front-panel controls is arguably what gives it its strongest identity. Add balanced XLR outputs, USB Audio/MIDI and a compact aluminium chassis, and it becomes a particularly strong choice for working keyboard players who value immediacy over deep workstation-style programming.
