Yamaha NU1XA AvantGrand™ Hybrid Digital Upright Piano Polished Ebony
Description
INTRODUCTION
The Yamaha NU1XA AvantGrand Hybrid Piano in Polished Ebony combines the genuine mechanical playing experience of an acoustic upright piano with Yamaha’s sophisticated digital sound, sensing, recording and connectivity technologies.
Unlike a conventional digital piano keyboard designed to simulate an acoustic action, the NU1XA uses a specialised upright piano action together with Yamaha’s advanced Articulation Sensor System.
Both key and hammer movement are continuously detected using non-contact electromagnetic induction sensors, allowing the NU1XA to capture subtle details in the way the pianist interacts with the real mechanical action without interfering with its natural movement.
At the heart of the instrument are two world-class concert grands:
-
Yamaha CFX
-
Bösendorfer Imperial
These are enhanced by Spatial Acoustic Sampling, dedicated binaural sampling, Virtual Resonance Modeling and Grand Expression Modeling.
The NU1XA also features GrandTouch pedals with GP Response Damper, a powerful (40W + 45W) × 2 amplification system, Bluetooth Audio and MIDI, 16-track MIDI recording, WAV audio recording and Smart Pianist compatibility.
All of this is housed within an elegant and remarkably space-efficient upright-style cabinet finished in traditional Polished Ebony.
For pianists who want genuine acoustic upright-piano mechanics but also need headphones, volume control, recording and modern digital connectivity, the NU1XA provides a compelling bridge between acoustic and digital piano design.

A REAL UPRIGHT PIANO ACTION
The defining feature of the Yamaha NU1XA is its:
Specialised Upright Piano Action.
This is what fundamentally separates an AvantGrand hybrid piano from a conventional digital piano.
Rather than using a digital keyboard mechanism designed to imitate aspects of an acoustic action, the NU1XA incorporates a genuine mechanical upright-piano-style action.
When you play, the keys physically operate the action and hammers.
There are no acoustic strings for the hammers to strike. Instead, sophisticated sensors detect the movement of the mechanical system and Yamaha's digital tone generator produces the sound.
The result combines:
Real mechanical piano interaction
with:
Digital sound generation.
For pianists whose priority is authentic acoustic-style keyboard behaviour, this is the fundamental reason to consider an AvantGrand.
ARTICULATION SENSOR SYSTEM
The NU1XA incorporates Yamaha’s advanced:
Articulation Sensor System.
The system monitors both:
-
Key movement
-
Hammer movement
using non-contact sensors.
This allows the instrument to detect subtle details in the pianist’s interaction with the mechanical action.
NON-CONTACT ELECTROMAGNETIC SENSORS
Both the key and hammer sensors use:
Non-contact continuous electromagnetic inductive detection.
Because sensing is non-contact, the system monitors the action without physically interfering with its natural movement.
The pianist interacts with the mechanical upright action while the digital system independently detects what is happening.
This combination is central to the NU1XA design.
EXPRESSIVE REPEATED NOTES
Monitoring both key and hammer behaviour enables the Articulation Sensor System to recognise detailed movement during sophisticated playing techniques, including repeated notes.
This allows the digital sound engine to respond to the behaviour of the physical action rather than relying simply on basic key-on and key-off information.
PREMIUM KEY SURFACES
The NU1XA uses:
Acrylic resin white key surfaces
and:
Phenolic resin black key surfaces.
These materials complement the genuine mechanical upright-style action and contribute to the premium tactile experience.
TOUCH SENSITIVITY
Digital sound response can be adjusted through:
-
Hard 2
-
Hard 1
-
Medium
-
Soft 1
-
Soft 2
-
Fixed
This allows the relationship between playing velocity and generated sound to be tailored to the pianist.
YAMAHA CFX CONCERT GRAND
The NU1XA features Yamaha’s flagship:
CFX Concert Grand.
The CFX is Yamaha’s premier concert grand piano and is known for its clarity, projection, tonal colour and powerful dynamic range.
Its distinctive sound forms one of the two principal acoustic grand-piano characters within the NU1XA.
BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL
Alongside the Yamaha CFX is the:
Bösendorfer Imperial.
Bösendorfer is Yamaha’s historic Viennese piano marque.
The Imperial provides a distinctly different piano personality, with a rich, warm tonal character that contrasts beautifully with the Yamaha CFX.
The NU1XA therefore provides two genuine concert-grand characters rather than simple tonal variations of the same piano.
SPATIAL ACOUSTIC SAMPLING
The NU1XA uses Yamaha’s:
Spatial Acoustic Sampling
for the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial.
This technology is designed to reproduce not only the tone of these concert grands but also their spatial characteristics from the pianist’s perspective.
The result is a more dimensional and convincing acoustic-piano presentation.
BINAURAL SAMPLING
Both headline concert grand Voices benefit from:
Binaural Sampling.
This applies to:
-
Yamaha CFX
-
Bösendorfer Imperial
When using headphones, binaural sampling creates a spatial presentation designed to make the piano appear to originate naturally around the player rather than simply from inside the headphones.
For musicians practising privately for extended periods, this creates a particularly immersive experience.
VIRTUAL RESONANCE MODELING – VRM
An acoustic piano is a complex resonant system.
Strings, soundboard, cabinet and other components interact continuously as the instrument is played.
Yamaha’s:
Virtual Resonance Modeling – VRM
recreates these complex sympathetic interactions digitally.
The resulting sound responds dynamically according to factors including:
-
Notes being played
-
Notes already sounding
-
Pedal position
-
Harmonic relationships
-
Playing technique
This helps the NU1XA behave more like a complete acoustic instrument rather than simply playing back individual sampled notes.
GRAND EXPRESSION MODELING
Grand Expression Modeling focuses on the relationship between the pianist’s physical input and the resulting sound.
Subtle variations in playing technique can therefore create corresponding differences in expression.
Combined with the NU1XA’s real mechanical upright action and Articulation Sensor System, this provides a highly sophisticated relationship between physical performance and digital sound.
KEY-OFF SAMPLES
Key-Off Samples reproduce the subtle tonal behaviour that occurs when notes are released.
These small acoustic details contribute to the overall realism of the piano experience.
SMOOTH RELEASE
Smooth Release helps recreate the tonal changes associated with different note-release behaviour.
Together with VRM and Grand Expression Modeling, this contributes to Yamaha’s wider approach of recreating the complete behaviour of an acoustic piano.
256-NOTE POLYPHONY
The NU1XA provides:
256-note maximum polyphony.
This gives substantial capacity for:
-
Complex classical repertoire
-
Sustained passages
-
Extensive damper-pedal use
-
Layered Voices
-
MIDI playback
28 PRESET VOICES
The NU1XA provides:
28 preset Voices.
Acoustic piano remains firmly at the centre of the instrument, but the additional Voices broaden its usefulness for practice, performance and creative playing.
GRANDTOUCH PEDALS
The NU1XA uses Yamaha’s:
GrandTouch pedals.
Three pedals provide:
-
Damper
-
Sostenuto
-
Soft
The damper supports half-pedalling.
GP RESPONSE DAMPER
The damper pedal incorporates Yamaha’s:
GP Response Damper.
On an acoustic grand piano, damper-pedal resistance changes through its travel as the damper mechanism begins to operate.
GP Response Damper is designed to recreate this changing resistance.
For serious pianists, this provides a more nuanced physical response when developing detailed pedalling technique.
POWERFUL SPEAKER SYSTEM
The NU1XA incorporates a substantial built-in amplification system.
Amplification is:
(40W + 45W) × 2
giving:
170 watts total rated amplifier output.
The speaker configuration is:
(16cm + 2.5cm dome with Bidirectional Horn) × 2.
This gives the instrument the power and dynamic range required for convincing acoustic-piano reproduction in the room.
BIDIRECTIONAL HORNS
The high-frequency drivers incorporate:
Bidirectional Horns.
These help distribute sound through the instrument and into the room to create a more natural acoustic presentation.
INTELLIGENT ACOUSTIC CONTROL
Intelligent Acoustic Control – IAC helps maintain tonal balance when playing at reduced volume.
This is particularly useful for home practice where the full output of the built-in speaker system may not always be appropriate.
STEREOPHONIC OPTIMIZER
For suitable Voices when using headphones, Stereophonic Optimizer helps create a more natural spatial presentation.
Combined with the dedicated binaural CFX and Bösendorfer Voices, the NU1XA provides an excellent private-practice environment.
16-TRACK MIDI RECORDING
The NU1XA provides a sophisticated onboard MIDI recording system.
It can store up to:
250 User Songs
with up to:
16 tracks
per recording.
Approximate capacity is:
500KB per Song.
This makes the recorder useful for:
-
Practice
-
Self-assessment
-
Composition
-
Multi-part arrangements
-
Teaching
-
Performance development
WAV AUDIO RECORDING
The NU1XA can also record and play:
WAV audio at 44.1kHz / 16-bit stereo.
Maximum recording time is approximately:
80 minutes per Song.
This produces an actual audio recording of the performance rather than storing only MIDI performance data.
BUILT-IN SONG LIBRARY
The NU1XA provides an extensive built-in song library including:
-
50 Classical Music Masterpieces
-
28 Voice Demo Songs
-
303 Lesson Songs
This provides substantial material for demonstration, study and practice.
BLUETOOTH AUDIO

-
General music playback
BLUETOOTH MIDI
The NU1XA also supports:
Bluetooth MIDI
where available.
This allows compatible wireless communication with supported music applications and smart devices.
SMART PIANIST
The NU1XA is compatible with Yamaha’s:
Smart Pianist
app.
Smart Pianist can provide convenient graphical access to compatible piano functions and settings from a supported smart device.
CONNECTIVITY
The NU1XA provides extensive connectivity including:
-
2 × standard stereo headphone outputs

This gives the instrument excellent flexibility for home practice, teaching and recording environments.
SOFT-CLOSE FALLBOARD
The cabinet incorporates a:
Soft-Close Fallboard.
This allows the keyboard cover to close in a controlled manner and contributes to the premium feel of the instrument.
COMPACT HYBRID DESIGN
Despite containing a genuine mechanical upright-style action, the NU1XA has a remarkably compact cabinet depth of:
462mm.
This makes it considerably easier to accommodate than many traditional acoustic upright pianos while retaining the physical mechanical action that defines the AvantGrand concept.

NU1XA VS A CONVENTIONAL DIGITAL PIANO
This is one of the most important distinctions to understand.
A conventional digital piano uses a purpose-designed digital keyboard mechanism intended to reproduce aspects of acoustic-piano feel.
The NU1XA instead uses:
A specialised mechanical upright piano action.
The keys operate a real action and hammer mechanism, while sensors monitor the movement and trigger Yamaha’s digital sound engine.
The NU1XA therefore combines:
Acoustic mechanical action
with:
Digital sound technology.
That is why Yamaha categorises it as an:
AvantGrand hybrid piano.
NU1XA VS NU1XAPWH
Technically, these are the same instrument.
The principal difference is finish.
NU1XA
Polished Ebony
A traditional high-gloss black piano appearance.
NU1XAPWH
Polished White
A striking high-gloss white cabinet for a more contemporary aesthetic.
Both provide the same core:
-
Specialised upright piano action
-
Articulation Sensor System
-
Key and hammer sensing
-
CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial
-
Spatial Acoustic Sampling
-
Binaural sampling
-
VRM
-
Grand Expression Modeling
-
256-note polyphony
-
28 Voices
-
GrandTouch pedals
-
GP Response Damper
-
170W total rated amplification
The choice is therefore primarily one of cabinet finish.
NU1XA VS CLP-895GP
Both are premium Yamaha instruments, but their underlying design philosophies are very different.
