Description
The ESP LTD EC-201 Black Satin is a streamlined single-cut electric guitar built for players who want powerful rock and metal tones with straightforward controls. Its mahogany body, set-neck construction and high-output ESP Designed LH-150B bridge humbucker create a strong, sustaining sound that works particularly well with overdrive and high-gain amplification.
A push-pull coil-split expands the EC-201 beyond its full humbucker voice, providing a brighter and more focused alternative for cleaner passages, layered rhythm parts and lighter styles.
Finished in stealthy Black Satin with black hardware, multi-ply binding and ESP flag fingerboard inlays, the EC-201 delivers the distinctive look and feel of the LTD EC Series at an accessible price.

Fair Deal Quality Control Assessment
Our team has inspected the guitar’s pickup, push-pull control, output, tuning machines, bridge, neck, frets and general playability.
The single-pickup electronic layout operates correctly, with the push-pull volume control providing access to both full humbucker and coil-split sounds.
Service and Setup Work Performed
The guitar has received a general inspection, tuning check and playability assessment before being offered for sale.
Setup preferences vary between players, particularly when using alternative tunings or heavier string gauges.
Why Choose the ESP LTD EC-201?
Powerful Single-Humbucker Design
The EC-201 uses a single ESP Designed LH-150B humbucker positioned at the bridge. Its strong output and focused response make it particularly effective for distorted rhythm playing, hard-hitting power chords and sustained lead tones.
Removing the neck pickup and selector switch creates an uncluttered control layout that allows players to concentrate on their performance.
Push-Pull Coil-Split
Pulling the master volume control splits the LH-150B humbucker, producing a brighter and leaner sound.
This gives the EC-201 greater flexibility without adding additional switches or control knobs. The split sound is useful for clean passages, lighter overdrive, funk-inspired rhythm parts and layered recordings.
Set-Neck Mahogany Construction
The three-piece mahogany neck is joined to the mahogany body using traditional set-neck construction.
This creates a solid connection between the neck and body, helping the guitar deliver the sustain and strong midrange response associated with single-cut mahogany instruments.
The sculpted neck joint also supports comfortable access to the upper frets.
Comfortable Thin U Neck Profile
ESP’s Thin U neck profile provides a fast and comfortable playing feel without becoming excessively narrow.
It works equally well for heavy rhythm playing, power chords, bends and faster lead techniques.
24 Extra-Jumbo Frets
Unlike many traditional single-cut guitars, the EC-201 offers 24 extra-jumbo frets.
This provides a full two-octave range on each string and gives lead players additional notes in the guitar’s upper register. The larger fret size also supports smooth string bends and controlled vibrato.
Reliable Fixed Bridge
The LTD Tune-O-Matic-style bridge and tailpiece provide a stable platform for the strings.
This fixed-bridge design is straightforward to tune and maintain, making it suitable for beginners, touring musicians and players who regularly use alternative tunings.
Distinctive Black Satin Styling
The Black Satin finish gives the EC-201 a purposeful, understated appearance.
Black hardware, body and headstock binding, a covered bridge pickup and ESP flag fingerboard inlays complete its modern LTD aesthetic.
Why Choose a Single-Pickup Electric Guitar?
A single-pickup guitar places simplicity at the centre of the playing experience.
Many rock and metal players spend most of their time using the bridge pickup. By removing additional pickups, tone controls and selector switches, the EC-201 provides immediate access to its main sound without unnecessary distractions.
This streamlined layout can be particularly useful on stage, where players need to make quick adjustments without accidentally moving a selector switch.
The coil-split ensures the guitar still offers tonal variation when a brighter sound is required.
Who Is It For?
Beginner Players
The uncomplicated control layout makes the EC-201 easy to understand. Beginners can focus on playing technique and amplifier settings rather than managing multiple volume, tone and pickup controls.
Intermediate Players
Players progressing into rock and metal will appreciate the high-output pickup, fixed bridge and comfortable Thin U neck.
Advanced Players
Experienced guitarists may value the EC-201 as a focused live guitar, recording instrument, backup guitar or dedicated option for alternative tunings.
Sound and Playing Character
The EC-201 has a strong, direct sound with plenty of midrange presence and output from its bridge humbucker.
Its full humbucker setting is well suited to:
-
Heavy power chords
-
Palm-muted riffs
-
Hard rock rhythm playing
-
Punk and alternative styles
-
High-gain lead tones
-
Drop-tuned guitar parts
-
Sustained melodic lines
Activating the coil-split produces a clearer, lower-output response that works well for:
-
Clean arpeggios
-
Lighter rhythm playing
-
Layered studio parts
-
Edge-of-breakup amplifier sounds
-
Brighter chord voicings

ESP LTD EC-201 Compared with Other EC Models
Compared with the ESP LTD EC-201 FT
The standard EC-201 features the more traditional carved single-cut body style, 24 frets and separate Tune-O-Matic-style bridge and tailpiece.
The EC-201 FT uses a flatter, more streamlined body design with 22 frets and string-through-body construction.
Both models share the focused single-humbucker concept, but they provide noticeably different looks and playing experiences.
Compared with the ESP LTD EC-256
The EC-256 uses two humbuckers, a pickup selector and a more conventional collection of volume and tone controls.
It is the better choice for players who regularly switch between warm neck-pickup sounds and sharper bridge-pickup tones.
The EC-201 is more focused, with one pickup and one push-pull control.
Compared with a Traditional Dual-Humbucker Single-Cut
A traditional dual-humbucker guitar provides a wider choice of pickup combinations.
The EC-201 prioritises immediacy and simplicity, making it particularly suitable for players who predominantly use high-gain bridge-pickup sounds.
Pairs Perfectly With
The ESP LTD EC-201 works particularly well with:
-
High-gain valve or modelling amplifiers
-
Distortion and overdrive pedals
-
Boost pedals for tighter rhythm sounds
-
Noise gates
-
Drop-tuning and pitch-shifting effects
-
Medium or heavy guitar picks
-
Heavier strings for substantially lowered tunings
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the ESP LTD EC-201 suitable for beginners?
Yes. Its single pickup, fixed bridge and one-control layout make it straightforward to operate and maintain.
What does the push-pull volume control do?
Pulling the volume knob splits the bridge humbucker, producing a brighter and lower-output sound with a more single-coil-like character.
Can the EC-201 produce clean sounds?
Yes. The full humbucker can produce warm clean sounds, while the coil-split provides a brighter option with additional clarity.
Is it suitable for lower tunings?
Yes. Its fixed bridge and high-output pickup make it a strong option for lower tunings. Heavier strings and an appropriate setup may be beneficial when tuning significantly below standard pitch.
Does the pickup require a battery?
No. The ESP Designed LH-150B is a passive pickup and does not require a battery.
Is the EC-201 only suitable for metal?
No. Although it is particularly effective for metal and hard rock, it can also cover punk, alternative, grunge, classic rock and heavier blues styles.
What is the benefit of having 24 frets?
Twenty-four frets provide a full two-octave range on each string, giving lead players access to additional high notes compared with a traditional 22-fret guitar.
Is the Black Satin finish glossy?
No. Black Satin has a subdued, low-gloss appearance rather than the reflective surface of a conventional gloss finish.
Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The ESP LTD EC-201 Black Satin is an excellent choice for guitarists who want a focused, powerful single-cut without complicated electronics.
Its high-output bridge humbucker delivers the punch needed for heavy rhythm and lead tones, while the push-pull coil-split adds enough flexibility for cleaner and brighter passages. Set-neck mahogany construction, 24 extra-jumbo frets and a comfortable Thin U neck give it the feel and performance expected from the LTD EC Series.
This open-box example offers an especially attractive opportunity for players seeking modern ESP styling, dependable playability and hard-hitting tone at a reduced price.
