What Makes the PRS SE NF3 Special?
The SE NF3 takes the versatility associated with a traditional three-pickup bolt-on electric and gives it a distinctly PRS character. A poplar body, bolt-on maple neck and rosewood fingerboard create a lively and responsive platform, while the Wide Thin neck profile and 25-inch scale provide the familiar comfort and playability associated with many PRS guitars.
Its defining feature is the trio of Narrowfield DD “S” pickups. These Deep Dish pickups use taller bobbins and PRS's mixed magnet and steel pole-piece design to deliver focused lows and musical highs without becoming thin. Because they are hum-cancelling, the NF3 can provide much of the snap and articulation players enjoy from single-coil guitars while remaining quieter when using overdrive, compression and higher-gain amplifier settings.
Who Is It For?
The PRS SE NF3 is an excellent choice for guitarists who want one instrument capable of moving comfortably between clean, edge-of-breakup and driven sounds.
Its five-way switching and three Narrowfield pickups make it especially useful for players who require several contrasting tones during a performance or recording session.
It is particularly well suited to:
-
Rock and alternative guitarists
-
Blues players
-
Country and roots musicians
-
Gospel and worship guitarists
-
Jazz and fusion players
-
Indie and pop musicians
-
Studio and session guitarists
-
Players who enjoy single-coil-style definition but want less noise
-
Guitarists who prefer a rosewood fingerboard
-
Musicians looking for a versatile bolt-on PRS
Why Choose Narrowfield Pickups?
Narrowfield pickups occupy useful tonal territory between traditional single coils and full-size humbuckers. They provide plenty of attack and note separation while delivering additional body and effective hum cancellation.
This becomes particularly useful when pedals and amplifier gain are introduced. Traditional single coils can generate noticeable background hum, whereas the Narrowfield DD “S” pickups allow the NF3 to retain articulate, lively tones while keeping unwanted electrical noise under better control.
PRS SE NF3 vs a Traditional Three Single-Coil Guitar
A conventional three-single-coil guitar is often chosen for its bright attack, dynamic clean sounds and distinctive in-between pickup combinations. The SE NF3 explores similar versatility but uses three Narrowfield DD “S” hum-cancelling pickups instead.
The result is a fuller and more muscular response with excellent definition and considerably less traditional single-coil hum. Players who enjoy a classic three-pickup layout but want something with a different tonal character may find the NF3 particularly appealing.

Three Narrowfield DD “S” Pickups
The NF3 name reflects its defining feature: three PRS Narrowfield pickups.
The DD or Deep Dish design uses taller bobbins to accommodate additional winds, together with carefully arranged metal components between the magnets. This gives the pickups a focused and powerful response with strong bass definition and musical highs.
Using three of these pickups alongside a five-way selector gives the NF3 a broad palette of individual and combined pickup sounds without introducing complicated controls.
Five-Way Pickup Switching
The traditional-style five-way blade selector makes accessing the NF3's tonal range quick and intuitive.
The bridge position provides the strongest bite and attack, while the neck pickup delivers a fuller and smoother response. The middle pickup offers its own balanced voice, with positions two and four combining adjacent pickups for more complex rhythm and clean textures.
For gigging musicians, the simple layout makes changing sounds during a song fast and predictable.
Wide Thin Maple Neck
PRS equips the SE NF3 with its popular Wide Thin neck profile.
The profile is designed to feel relatively slim front-to-back while maintaining enough width for comfortable fretting and lead work. Combined with the 25-inch scale length and 10-inch-radius rosewood fingerboard, it creates an adaptable playing surface for chords, bends, fast passages and contemporary techniques.
PRS Patented Tremolo
The PRS Patented Tremolo adds expressive pitch control while remaining an integral part of the guitar's overall design.
Players can use it for gentle chord shimmer, melodic vibrato or more pronounced pitch movement, making the NF3 more flexible than a comparable fixed-bridge instrument.
