88-NOTE NW-GH3 NATURAL WOOD KEYBOARD

The defining physical feature of the CP88 is Yamaha’s:

NW-GH3 – Natural Wood Graded Hammer keyboard.

This is where the CP88 separates itself from the lighter CP73.

The CP88 is specifically aimed at pianists who want the physical response of a premium weighted piano action.

Its keyboard incorporates:

  • 88-note range

  • Wooden white keys

  • Graded hammer weighting

  • Triple-sensor detection

  • Synthetic ivory white-key surfaces

  • Synthetic ebony black-key surfaces

NATURAL WOOD WHITE KEYS

The CP88 uses:

Wooden white keys.

For pianists accustomed to acoustic instruments, the additional substance of wooden keys contributes to the action’s premium physical character.

This is an important distinction from many lighter stage keyboards using entirely moulded key constructions.

GRADED HAMMER RESPONSE

The CP88 action is:

Graded.

The lower register provides greater resistance, becoming progressively lighter as you move towards the treble.

This reflects the underlying principle of an acoustic piano action, where the bass hammers are heavier than those in the upper register.

For piano-focused performers, this creates a more familiar relationship between register and touch.

TRIPLE-SENSOR DETECTION

The CP88 uses:

Triple-sensor key detection.

This allows a note to be re-articulated without the key necessarily returning fully to its original resting position.

The benefit is particularly noticeable in:

  • Fast repeated notes

  • Trills

  • Classical passages

  • Jazz

  • Rapid rhythmic piano playing

It gives the action a more sophisticated repetition response than simpler dual-sensor stage-piano keyboards.

SYNTHETIC IVORY & EBONY KEY SURFACES

The CP88 combines:

Synthetic ivory white-key surfaces

with:

Synthetic ebony black-key surfaces.

These lightly textured surfaces are designed to provide grip during longer performances and practice sessions.

AWM2 TONE GENERATION

The CP88 uses Yamaha’s:

AWM2 – Advanced Wave Memory 2

tone-generation technology.

High-quality sampled instruments are combined with Yamaha’s processing and effects architecture to reproduce acoustic pianos, electric pianos and a broad library of supporting stage sounds.

129 VOICES

With Yamaha’s current CP operating system, the CP88 provides:

129 Voices

divided into:

  • 18 Piano Voices

  • 19 E.Piano Voices

  • 92 Sub Voices

This is significantly expanded from the original launch specification and gives the CP88 a broad sound library while retaining its focused stage-piano interface.

YAMAHA CFX2 CONCERT GRAND

Current CP software adds Yamaha’s:

CFX2 Concert Grand Piano Voice.

Based on Yamaha’s flagship concert grand, the CFX2 Voice is designed to provide:

  • Increased expression

  • Enhanced resonance

  • Extended dynamic range

It represents an important update to the CP88’s acoustic-piano library.

YAMAHA CFX

The CP88 also includes the established:

Yamaha CFX Concert Grand

Voice.

Its powerful bass, clear treble and strong projection make it a highly versatile stage piano sound.

It works particularly well for:

  • Solo piano

  • Pop

  • Rock

  • Jazz

  • Contemporary music

  • Full-band performance

BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL 290

The CP88 includes the:

Bösendorfer Imperial 290.

Its warmer Viennese tonal character gives the player a distinct alternative to Yamaha’s concert grands.

The current CP operating system also incorporates Yamaha’s refined version of this Voice, with improved clarity, tonal balance and consistency.

MULTIPLE YAMAHA GRAND PIANOS

The CP88 provides multiple premium grand-piano characters, including sounds based on:

  • Yamaha CFX2

  • Yamaha CFX

  • Yamaha S700

  • Yamaha CF3

  • Yamaha C7

  • Yamaha C3

  • Bösendorfer Imperial 290

This gives players a broad tonal palette for different:

  • Songs

  • Genres

  • Venues

  • Bands

  • Recording situations

YAMAHA U1 UPRIGHT

The CP88 includes a sampled:

Yamaha U1 Upright Piano.

Its more characterful upright personality works particularly well for:

  • Pop

  • Indie

  • Singer-songwriter material

  • Vintage-flavoured arrangements

  • Studio recording

YAMAHA SU7 UPRIGHT

Also included is Yamaha’s premium:

SU7 Upright Piano.

This provides a richer upright alternative with a strong, resonant tonal character.

FELT PIANO

The CP88 includes Yamaha’s:

Felt Piano.

Its softer, intimate tonal character is particularly effective for:

  • Contemporary piano

  • Ambient music

  • Film-style textures

  • Singer-songwriter arrangements

  • Studio production

ELECTRIC PIANOS

Electric piano is another major strength of the CP88.

The sound library covers:

  • Vintage tine electric pianos

  • Reed electric pianos

  • Yamaha electric grand

  • FM electric pianos

  • Clavi sounds

Each can be combined with dedicated effects to recreate both classic and contemporary keyboard sounds.

YAMAHA CP80

The CP88 includes the sound of Yamaha’s legendary:

CP80 Electric Grand Piano.

Originally designed to give musicians a piano capable of working effectively with amplified live bands, the CP80 developed its own distinctive character.

Its sound remains particularly useful for:

  • Rock

  • Pop

  • Fusion

  • Funk

  • Vintage keyboard arrangements

VINTAGE TINE ELECTRIC PIANOS

Multiple vintage-inspired tine electric piano sounds provide tonal characters ranging from:

  • Warm

  • Smooth

  • Rounded

through to:

  • Bright

  • Aggressive

  • Barking

  • Funk-oriented

The CP88’s dedicated E.Piano effects make it easy to build complete vintage electric-piano sounds directly from the front panel.

REED ELECTRIC PIANOS

Reed-style electric piano sounds provide another classic keyboard character.

These work particularly well for:

  • Soul

  • Funk

  • Rock

  • R&B

  • Blues

  • Vintage pop

FM ELECTRIC PIANOS

FM-style electric piano sounds provide the bright, glassy digital piano character associated with classic Yamaha FM instruments.

THREE DEDICATED SOUND SECTIONS

The CP88’s front panel is divided into:

PIANO

Dedicated to acoustic piano sounds.

E.PIANO

Dedicated to electric piano and related keyboard sounds.

SUB

Providing the broader sound library, including:

  • Organs

  • Strings

  • Pads

  • Synths

  • Brass

  • Bass

  • Guitars

  • Other instrumental sounds

Each section has dedicated controls, allowing the performer to work quickly without extensive menu navigation.

SPLITS & LAYERS

The three-section architecture makes it straightforward to build combinations such as:

  • Piano + strings

  • Piano + pad

  • Piano + bass split

  • Electric piano + pad

  • Electric piano + synth

  • Piano + organ

  • Three-Part layers

The emphasis is on immediate live control.

DIRECT ONE-TO-ONE INTERFACE

The CP88 is designed around:

Direct, immediate sound control.

Dedicated switches and rotary controls allow the performer to adjust sounds and effects directly from the front panel.

For stage work, this means less time navigating menus and more time responding to what is happening musically.

PIANO EFFECTS

The Piano section provides dedicated processing including:

  • Damper Resonance

  • Compressor

  • Distortion

  • Drive

  • Chorus

These allow acoustic piano sounds to be adapted to different musical and performance situations.

ELECTRIC PIANO EFFECTS

The E.Piano section provides an extensive effects architecture including:

  • Drive

  • Auto Pan

  • Tremolo

  • Ring Modulator

  • Touch Wah

  • Pedal Wah

  • Compressor

  • Chorus

  • Flanger

  • Phaser

This makes it possible to recreate classic processed electric-piano sounds without requiring external pedals.

SUB SECTION EFFECTS

The Sub section includes processing such as:

  • Chorus / Flanger

  • Rotary Speaker

  • Tremolo

  • Distortion

These are particularly useful for:

  • Organs

  • Synths

  • Pads

  • Other supporting sounds

VCM EFFECT TECHNOLOGY

The CP88 uses Yamaha’s:

VCM – Virtual Circuitry Modeling

technology within its effects architecture.

VCM is designed to recreate the behaviour and tonal character of vintage analogue effects and studio processors by modelling their underlying circuitry.

MASTER DELAY

The current CP operating system provides:

Three Master Delay types:

  • Analog

  • Digital

  • Tempo

Tempo Delay allows delay time to be synchronised quickly using tap tempo.

MASTER REVERB

A dedicated:

Hall Reverb

provides overall ambience.

3-BAND MASTER EQ

The CP88 includes a:

3-band Master EQ

with:

Sweepable Mid.

This provides immediate overall tonal adjustment for:

  • PA systems

  • Venues

  • Monitors

  • Studio setups

without editing individual Voices.

SEAMLESS SOUND SWITCHING

The CP architecture supports:

Seamless Sound Switching.

This allows sustained notes from one Live Set Sound to continue naturally when moving to another setup.

Current CP software also adds:

Seamless Section Sound Switching

for smoother transitions when individual sections are switched during performance.

320 LIVE SET SOUNDS

The current CP88 provides:

320 Live Set Sound locations

including:

128 preset Live Set Sounds.

A Live Set Sound can store a complete performance configuration for fast recall.

This can include:

  • Voice selections

  • Layers

  • Effects

  • Controller assignments

  • Other performance settings

This makes it straightforward to build complete song-specific setups for a live set.

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Professional pianists, gigging keyboardists, session players and serious performers who want a premium 88-note piano action, excellent acoustic and electric piano sounds and direct stage control.

Likely upgrade path: Players moving from GHS-equipped stage pianos, portable digital pianos or lighter performance keyboards who want a more substantial Natural Wood action and professional stage connectivity.

Useful pairings: Yamaha SC-CP88 soft case, expression pedal, additional foot controller, sturdy professional keyboard stand and suitable stage monitoring.

Our tip: The keyboard is the reason to choose the CP88 over the CP73 or CK88. Its NW-GH3 Natural Wood action, wooden white keys, graded weighting and triple-sensor detection make it the CP model for pianists who do not want to compromise their playing experience just because the instrument has to travel to gigs.

FDM view: The CP88 is refreshingly focused. Yamaha has not tried to turn it into a workstation or arranger keyboard. Instead, the emphasis is on excellent acoustic pianos, excellent electric pianos, a premium 88-note action and controls that make sense when you are actually standing on a stage. The current CP OS has made it significantly stronger too, with CFX2, the refined Bösendorfer Voice, expanded Live Sets and improved workflow. For a pianist who values touch and immediacy over endless menus, it remains a very compelling professional stage piano.

The CP88 provides a substantially more premium piano-focused keyboard action, professional XLR outputs and dedicated acoustic/electric piano architecture.

The CK88 is lighter and adds built-in speakers, battery operation and dedicated organ controls.

Is the CP88 suitable as a MIDI controller?

Yes.

Its MIDI and USB connectivity allow it to control compatible external hardware and software.

WHAT’S INCLUDED?

Yamaha specifies the standard CP88 package as including:

  • Yamaha FC3A Foot Pedal

  • Owner’s Manual

  • Power Cord

PREMIUM PIANO TOUCH. PROFESSIONAL STAGE CONTROL.
