Description

INTRODUCTION

The Yamaha reface YC Mobile Mini Organ Keyboard brings the character and hands-on control of classic combo and tonewheel-style organs into an exceptionally compact, portable keyboard.

Designed around immediate performance rather than menu-driven editing, the reface YC gives you:

  • Five distinct organ types

  • Nine physical drawbars

  • Rotary speaker control

  • Vibrato/chorus

  • Percussion

  • Distortion

  • Reverb

All of this sits behind Yamaha’s:

37-note HQ Mini keyboard

with:

Initial Touch sensitivity.

The five organ types cover a broad range of vintage keyboard personalities:

  • American tonewheel-style organ

  • British transistor organ

  • Italian transistor organ

  • Japanese transistor organ

  • Yamaha YC-45D-style organ

This makes the reface YC useful for everything from:

  • Jazz

  • Soul

  • Funk

  • Gospel

  • Rock

  • Ska

  • Psychedelic music

  • Indie

  • Vintage pop

The organ sound engine uses Yamaha’s:

AWM Organ Flutes

technology with:

128-note maximum polyphony.

The front panel is built to behave like a compact performance organ rather than a preset-only keyboard.

You can shape the sound in real time using the nine drawbars, alter rotary speed, add percussion, change vibrato/chorus and drive the organ into distortion without navigating any deep menus.

Built-in:

2W × 2 stereo amplification

and:

3cm × 2 speakers

mean the reface YC can be played immediately without external amplification.

It can also run from:

6 × AA batteries

for approximately:

5 hours.

At only:

1.9kg excluding batteries

the reface YC is a genuinely portable organ keyboard that can work equally well as:

  • A songwriting instrument

  • A rehearsal keyboard

  • A compact second keyboard

  • A desktop organ module

  • A travelling practice instrument

  • A MIDI-controlled organ sound source

FIVE CLASSIC ORGAN TYPES

The reface YC provides:

Five organ types.

Each captures a different vintage organ personality.

These are selected using the front-panel:

WAVE

control.

The five organ types are:

  • H

  • V

  • F

  • A

  • Y

Together they cover a wide range of classic organ sounds.

H – AMERICAN TONEWHEEL-STYLE ORGAN

The:

H

setting recreates the character of a classic American tonewheel-style organ.

Yamaha describes this sound as having simple, sine-like waveforms with a warm character.

It is particularly well suited to:

  • Jazz

  • Soul

  • Gospel

  • Rock

  • Blues

  • Funk

This is the setting most closely associated with the classic drawbar-organ tradition.

V – BRITISH TRANSISTOR ORGAN

The:

V

setting recreates a British transistor organ from the 1960s.

Its harmonic content is closer to a square wave, producing a more present and cutting sound.

This type of organ became strongly associated with:

  • Psychedelic rock

  • Ska

  • Garage rock

  • 1960s pop

F – ITALIAN TRANSISTOR ORGAN

The:

F

setting recreates an Italian transistor organ.

Yamaha describes it as having a thicker sound with a stronger sawtooth component.

This gives it a distinctive character suited to:

  • 1960s pop

  • Garage

  • Alternative pop

  • Indie

  • Psychedelic music

A – JAPANESE TRANSISTOR ORGAN

The:

A

setting recreates a Japanese transistor organ from the 1970s.

Its bright tonal character is similar to a synthesizer sawtooth waveform.

This makes it useful for:

  • Vintage pop

  • Rock

  • Indie

  • Experimental music

  • Retro keyboard arrangements

Y – YAMAHA YC-45D

The:

Y

setting recreates the character of Yamaha’s own:

YC-45D

transistor organ from 1972.

Yamaha describes its harmonic content as being close to a square wave with:

  • Strong upper-register presence

  • Aggressive character

  • Pronounced distortion when driven

This gives the reface YC a direct connection to Yamaha’s own vintage combo-organ heritage.

NINE PHYSICAL DRAWBARS

The reface YC provides:

Nine physical drawbars.

These allow the harmonic structure of the organ sound to be changed directly while playing.

Each drawbar controls a different footage or harmonic component.

Moving the drawbars changes the balance between those harmonics and allows the player to create:

  • Warm registrations

  • Bright registrations

  • Hollow sounds

  • Full organ tones

  • Thin backing sounds

  • Aggressive lead registrations

This is one of the reface YC’s most important features.

Instead of selecting a fixed organ preset, you actually build the registration yourself.

REAL-TIME ORGAN CONTROL

The drawbars can be adjusted while playing.

That allows classic organ techniques such as:

  • Opening the registration during a solo

  • Adding upper harmonics

  • Pulling back drawbars during quieter passages

  • Building crescendos

  • Changing tone without changing presets

For organ performance, this hands-on interaction is far more useful than static preset selection.

AWM ORGAN FLUTES

The reface YC uses Yamaha’s:

AWM Organ Flutes

tone-generation technology.

This is designed specifically for organ-style harmonic control.

The system works with the drawbars to create the different organ registrations in real time.

Yamaha specifies:

128-note maximum polyphony

for the reface YC.

128-NOTE POLYPHONY

Maximum polyphony is:

128 notes.

For an organ keyboard, this provides ample capacity for:

  • Large chords

  • Sustained passages

  • Dense registrations

  • Fast repeated playing

  • MIDI-controlled performance

ROTARY SPEAKER EFFECT

The reface YC includes a:

Rotary Speaker

effect.

This recreates the movement and modulation associated with classic rotating-speaker cabinets.

The rotary control provides:

  • FAST

  • SLOW

  • STOP

  • OFF

positions.

That allows the player to change rotary behaviour directly while performing.

FAST ROTARY

The:

FAST

setting increases the rotary speaker speed.

This is ideal for:

  • Solos

  • Crescendos

  • Gospel

  • Rock

  • Soul

SLOW ROTARY

The:

SLOW

setting produces the characteristic slower modulation used for:

  • Chords

  • Accompaniment

  • Ballads

  • Jazz

  • Soul

STOP

The:

STOP

setting stops the virtual rotary movement.

This produces a different stationary speaker character while retaining the rotary cabinet processing.

OFF

The:

OFF

setting removes the rotary effect entirely.

This is particularly useful for the transistor-organ sounds, which may be better suited to a more direct amplification character.

VIBRATO / CHORUS

The reface YC includes dedicated:

Vibrato / Chorus

control.

A switch selects the modulation type, while a Depth slider adjusts the amount.

This provides classic organ movement and modulation directly from the front panel.

PERCUSSION

The reface YC includes dedicated:

Percussion

controls.

Two different footages are available, along with:

Length

control for adjusting the percussion decay.

This allows sharper, more percussive organ attacks to be created.

Percussion is particularly useful for:

  • Jazz organ

  • Funk

  • Gospel

  • Soul

  • Rock

DISTORTION

The reface YC includes:

Distortion.

This can add anything from subtle overdrive to a more aggressive organ sound.

Distortion is particularly effective with:

  • H organ

  • Y organ

  • Rock registrations

  • Gospel

  • Blues

  • Vintage organ tones

REVERB

A dedicated:

Reverb

control adds space and depth to the sound.

This can range from subtle ambience to a more spacious organ presentation.

37-NOTE HQ MINI KEYBOARD

The reface YC uses Yamaha’s:

37-note HQ Mini keyboard.

HQ stands for:

High Quality.

Yamaha developed the action specifically for the reface family, taking inspiration from the response of its professional FS keyboard designs and Pianica keyboards.

The result is a compact action designed to feel more precise and responsive than a basic mini-key keyboard.

INITIAL TOUCH

The reface YC provides:

Initial Touch sensitivity.

This gives the keyboard dynamic response when used with compatible external or MIDI applications.

For organ performance, the real focus remains on registration, percussion, rotary movement and expression control.

BUILT-IN STEREO SPEAKERS

The reface YC includes:

3cm × 2 built-in speakers

powered by:

2W × 2 amplification.

This makes it completely self-contained for:

  • Home practice

  • Songwriting

  • Backstage playing

  • Rehearsal

  • Desktop use

  • Travel

For larger venues, the dedicated line outputs can connect to external amplification.

BATTERY OPERATION

The reface YC can operate from:

6 × AA batteries

including suitable:

  • Alkaline batteries

  • Ni-MH rechargeable batteries

Yamaha quotes approximately:

5 hours

of battery operation.

AC POWER

The reface YC can also be powered using Yamaha’s:

PA-130

or an equivalent adaptor recommended by Yamaha.

Power consumption is approximately:

6W.

AUTO POWER OFF

The instrument includes:

Auto Power Off

to reduce power consumption when left unused.

FC7 FOOT CONTROLLER

Unlike the reface CP and DX, which provide sustain pedal inputs, the reface YC provides a:

FOOT CONTROLLER

connection.

Yamaha specifies compatibility with the:

FC7

expression pedal.

This allows real-time volume control using the foot — an especially important technique for organ performance.

WHY EXPRESSION MATTERS FOR ORGAN

On a traditional organ, expression control is an important part of performance technique.

An FC7-style expression pedal can be used to:

  • Increase volume into a solo

  • Pull the sound back during accompaniment

  • Shape musical phrases

  • Create dynamic swells

This makes an expression pedal one of the most useful accessories for the reface YC.

STEREO OUTPUTS

The reface YC provides:

  • OUTPUT L/MONO

  • OUTPUT R

using standard:

6.3mm unbalanced TS jack outputs.

These can connect to:

  • PA systems

  • Keyboard amplifiers

  • Powered monitors

  • Audio interfaces

  • Mixers

HEADPHONE OUTPUT

A:

6.3mm stereo headphone output

is provided.

This allows private practice and monitoring.

AUX INPUT

The reface YC provides:

3.5mm stereo AUX IN.

A compatible external audio source can therefore be played through the keyboard’s speaker system.

This is useful for:

  • Backing tracks

  • Practice

  • Playing along

  • Reference listening

USB TO HOST

The reface YC includes:

USB TO HOST

for MIDI connectivity with compatible computers and devices.

Yamaha does not specify USB audio for the reface YC.

MIDI IN / OUT

Traditional MIDI connectivity is provided through the included:

MIDI breakout cable.

This gives the reface YC:

  • MIDI IN

  • MIDI OUT

connectivity.

USE REFACE YC WITH A FULL-SIZE KEYBOARD

One of the most useful features of the MIDI input is the ability to control the reface YC from a larger keyboard.

For example, you could connect:

  • 61-note controller

  • 73-note stage keyboard

  • 88-note weighted keyboard

  • External organ controller

and use the reface YC as a compact:

Organ sound module.

This gives players who prefer full-size keys access to the YC engine without giving up the reface’s portability.

NO PHRASE LOOPER

The reface YC does:

not

include a Phrase Looper.

Phrase Looper functionality is fitted to:

  • reface CS

  • reface DX

but not:

  • reface CP

  • reface YC.

NO DISPLAY

The reface YC does:

not

use an LCD screen.

That is deliberate.

Its operating philosophy is almost entirely hands-on.

The important controls are all immediately accessible:

  • Organ type

  • Drawbars

  • Rotary

  • Vibrato/chorus

  • Percussion

  • Distortion

  • Reverb

SOUNDMONDO

The reface family works with Yamaha’s:

Soundmondo

sound-sharing ecosystem.

For the reface YC, Soundmondo can be used to explore and share organ registrations and sound settings.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The Yamaha reface YC is particularly well suited to:

  • Organ players

  • Keyboardists

  • Gospel musicians

  • Soul players

  • Funk musicians

  • Jazz players

  • Rock keyboardists

  • Ska musicians

  • Indie players

  • Producers

  • Songwriters

  • Home studio musicians

HOW IT COMPARES

REFACE YC VS REFACE CP

Both share the same compact 37-note HQ Mini format, but their sound focus is completely different.

reface YC

  • Five organ types

  • Nine drawbars

  • Rotary Speaker

  • Vibrato/Chorus

  • Percussion

  • Distortion

  • Reverb

  • 128-note polyphony

reface CP

  • Six vintage keyboard types

  • Professional live controls

  • 7.1kg

Choose reface YC for maximum portability and simplicity.

Choose YC61 for professional stage performance and a full-size organ-oriented keyboard.

REFACE YC VS CK61

The CK61 actually draws part of its organ concept from the reface YC.

reface YC

Focused almost entirely on:

Classic organ sounds and direct drawbar control.

CK61

Adds:

  • Full-size 61-note FSB action

  • Piano sounds

  • Electric pianos

  • Synths

  • Three Parts

  • Larger effects system

  • Live Set memories

  • USB Audio/MIDI

  • Built-in speakers

  • Battery operation

Choose reface YC when you want a dedicated compact organ.

Choose CK61 when you need a broader all-purpose stage keyboard.

REFACE YC VS VINTAGE COMBO ORGAN

Original vintage combo organs can be desirable because of their character, but they can also involve:

  • Significant size

  • Weight

  • Age-related maintenance

  • Unreliable electronics

  • Transport challenges

The reface YC does not physically reproduce those original instruments.

Instead, it puts five classic organ personalities and real drawbar-style control into a keyboard weighing only:

1.9kg.

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Organ enthusiasts, songwriters, producers and gigging keyboardists who want genuine drawbar-style control and classic organ character in the smallest possible hardware package.

Likely upgrade path: Players using generic organ sounds on portable keyboards, MIDI controllers or software instruments who want a dedicated physical organ interface with real drawbars.

Useful pairings: Yamaha FC7 expression pedal, Yamaha SC-reface gig bag, headphones, compact stand and a full-size MIDI controller where larger keys are required.

Our tip: The FC7 expression pedal is especially worthwhile with the reface YC. Organ playing is not just about which notes you play or where the drawbars are set — shaping volume with the foot is an important part of the musical technique, and the YC provides a dedicated Foot Controller input for exactly that reason.

FDM view: The reface YC gets the important things right. Five organ types may sound modest on paper, but they cover genuinely different vintage traditions, and the nine physical drawbars make those sounds far more flexible than a large bank of fixed presets. Add rotary control, percussion, vibrato/chorus, distortion, speakers, batteries and a 1.9kg chassis, and it becomes a wonderfully practical little organ for songwriting, studios, rehearsals and second-keyboard duties.
