Yamaha P-S500B Portable Smart Piano Black
Description
INTRODUCTION
The Yamaha P-S500 is an innovative 88-key smart digital piano that combines authentic weighted piano playing with interactive learning, automatic accompaniment and extensive creative features controlled through Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app.
At its heart is an 88-key Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) keyboard, giving beginners and developing pianists a properly weighted action across the full acoustic-piano range.
The piano engine is equally impressive. The P-S500 includes the distinctive sounds of both the Yamaha CFX concert grand and Bösendorfer Imperial, enhanced by Virtual Resonance Modeling, CFX Binaural Sampling and 256-note polyphony.
What makes the P-S500 particularly different is Yamaha’s Stream Lights system. Four-stage lights positioned above the keys can show you which notes to play, working together with Smart Pianist to provide an intuitive visual route through compatible songs — especially useful if conventional musical notation still feels unfamiliar.
Connect Smart Pianist and the P-S500 expands into an extraordinarily capable musical workstation with access to 660 Voices, 370 accompaniment Styles, 403 preset Songs, 16-track recording, Audio To Score, microphone input and Vocal Harmony.
For beginners who want genuine piano fundamentals, returning players who want help rediscovering music and experienced home musicians looking for a highly interactive digital piano, the P-S500 offers a unique combination of weighted piano, learning system and arranger-style creativity.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT
The P-S500 solves an interesting problem.
Many people want to play piano but find traditional sheet music intimidating.
Others start learning, lose momentum and eventually stop because practice becomes frustrating.
The P-S500 gives you another route.
Yamaha’s Stream Lights physically show you where notes are located on the keyboard, while Smart Pianist provides the musical content and guidance behind them.
That means you can begin interacting with real music even if you are still developing your ability to read notation fluently.
But unlike a basic light-up beginner keyboard, the P-S500 is built around a full 88-key weighted GHS piano action.
So the learning assistance does not come at the expense of genuine piano technique.
And once you move beyond the learning functions, the P-S500 opens into an enormous musical environment with hundreds of sounds, accompaniment Styles, recording, microphone processing and sophisticated piano technology.
STREAM LIGHTS – SEE WHERE TO PLAY
The defining feature of the Yamaha P-S500 is its Stream Lights system.
Lights positioned above the keyboard visually guide you towards the notes required by compatible Songs.
The lights operate across four stages, allowing you to see notes approaching before they need to be played.
This can help with:
-
Finding notes
-
Hand positioning
-
Timing
-
Sight-reading development
-
Learning unfamiliar songs
-
Independent home practice
For someone who finds conventional notation difficult at first, the system provides a highly intuitive connection between the music and the physical keyboard.
SMART PIANIST – THE HEART OF THE P-S500 EXPERIENCE
The P-S500 has been designed to work closely with Yamaha’s Smart Pianist app.
Connect a compatible smart device and the app becomes the main visual interface for many of the piano’s deeper functions.
Smart Pianist gives access to features including:
-
Voice selection
-
Accompaniment Styles
-
Songs
-
Score display
-
Lyrics display
-
Piano Room
-
Recording
-
Registration Memory
-
Lesson functions
-
Audio To Score
-
Additional sound and performance settings
Many of the P-S500’s headline specifications expand significantly when used with Smart Pianist.
For example:
Voices: 100 onboard / 660 with Smart Pianist
Styles: 100 onboard / 370 with Smart Pianist
Songs: 100 onboard / 403 with Smart Pianist
This makes Smart Pianist an integral part of the P-S500 experience rather than merely an optional remote-control app.
AUDIO TO SCORE
One of Smart Pianist’s most distinctive P-S500 features is Audio To Score.
Load compatible music from your smart device and Smart Pianist can analyse the audio and generate a piano accompaniment score.
You can then use that score as a basis for playing along.
This can make favourite songs far more approachable for musicians who would otherwise need to search for or create an arrangement separately.
Combined with Stream Lights, it creates a particularly powerful learning workflow:
Choose a song → generate an accompaniment score → follow the Stream Lights → start playing.
88-KEY GRADED HAMMER STANDARD KEYBOARD
The P-S500 uses Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard keyboard.
You get the complete 88-key range of an acoustic piano.
The response is also graded.
Lower notes feel heavier, becoming progressively lighter towards the treble.
This mirrors an important characteristic of an acoustic-piano action and helps developing pianists learn appropriate finger control.
Six Touch Sensitivity Settings
Touch response can be adjusted between:
-
Hard 2
-
Hard 1
-
Medium
-
Soft 1
-
Soft 2
-
Fixed
This lets the keyboard respond appropriately to different playing styles and levels of finger strength.
YAMAHA CFX CONCERT GRAND
The P-S500 includes a Voice sampled from Yamaha’s prestigious CFX concert grand piano.
The CFX is known for its:
-
Powerful bass
-
Clear midrange
-
Singing treble
-
Wide dynamic range
-
Strong projection
This gives the P-S500 a premium principal piano sound suitable for everything from classical practice to contemporary performance.
BÖSENDORFER IMPERIAL
Alongside the CFX is the Bösendorfer Imperial.
Bösendorfer’s Viennese piano tradition gives the Imperial a noticeably different tonal personality.
Where the CFX can feel bright and projecting, the Bösendorfer offers a warmer, darker and more rounded character.
Having both instruments available lets the player choose the grand piano that best suits the repertoire and personal taste.
VIRTUAL RESONANCE MODELING
The P-S500 features Yamaha’s Virtual Resonance Modeling – VRM.
A real acoustic piano does not behave like a collection of isolated notes.
Strings resonate sympathetically.
The soundboard responds.
The cabinet contributes.
Pedalling changes which strings are free to vibrate.
VRM recreates these complex resonances digitally so the instrument responds more organically as notes, chords and pedal technique interact.
CFX BINAURAL SAMPLING
For private piano practice, the P-S500 provides CFX Binaural Sampling.
Binaural sampling is designed to reproduce the spatial impression of sitting at the piano when listening through headphones.
Rather than feeling as though the piano sound is located directly inside your head, the experience becomes more open and natural.
This can make long headphone practice sessions considerably more immersive.
STEREOPHONIC OPTIMIZER
For supported Voices outside the CFX binaural piano, Yamaha provides its Stereophonic Optimizer.
This similarly helps create the impression that sound is coming naturally from the instrument rather than directly from the headphones.
256-NOTE POLYPHONY
The P-S500 offers 256-note maximum polyphony.
This provides considerable headroom for:
-
Piano playing
-
Sustain-pedal passages
-
Layered Voices
-
Accompaniment Styles
-
Complex MIDI arrangements
-
16-track recording
For demanding arrangements, higher polyphony helps reduce the possibility of sustained notes being cut off prematurely.
660 VOICES WITH SMART PIANIST
When used with Smart Pianist, the P-S500 provides 660 instrument Voices.
These include:
-
13 VRM Voices
-
111 Super Articulation Voices
-
25 Natural! Voices
-
27 Sweet! Voices
-
47 Cool! Voices
-
58 Live! Voices
-
29 Organ Flutes! Voices
This gives the P-S500 an enormous tonal palette.
Alongside premium acoustic pianos, you can explore:
-
Electric pianos
-
Organs
-
Strings
-
Guitars
-
Brass
-
Woodwind
-
Synths
-
Orchestral instruments
-
World instruments
-
Ensemble sounds
Without Smart Pianist connected, 100 Voices remain available directly from the instrument.
SUPER ARTICULATION VOICES
The P-S500 includes 111 Super Articulation Voices.
Super Articulation technology helps selected sounds recreate performance characteristics associated with the real instrument.
For instruments such as guitars and winds, this can include nuances and articulations that make a keyboard performance feel considerably more convincing.
370 ACCOMPANIMENT STYLES
Connect Smart Pianist and the P-S500 provides 370 accompaniment Styles.
The library includes:
-
328 Pro Styles
-
25 Session Styles
-
3 Free Play Styles
-
13 Pianist Styles
Styles provide interactive backing arrangements that respond to the harmony you play.
This can effectively turn the P-S500 into a complete accompaniment instrument rather than simply a digital piano.
Style Sections
Styles include:
-
1 Intro
-
4 Main Variations
-
1 Ending
This lets the arrangement develop during a performance rather than simply repeating one pattern.
YOUR OWN BACKING BAND
Automatic accompaniment can provide:
-
Drums
-
Bass
-
Chords
-
Ensemble instruments
Change Style and the character of the entire virtual backing band changes with it.
This is particularly useful for:
-
Pop
-
Rock
-
Jazz
-
Ballads
-
Latin music
-
Traditional repertoire
-
Songwriting
-
Improvisation
For somebody learning music, accompaniment can also make everyday practice much more engaging.
403 PRESET SONGS
With Smart Pianist connected, the P-S500 provides access to 403 preset Songs.
Without Smart Pianist, 100 Songs remain accessible directly from the piano.
The broader library covers material ranging from popular music to classical repertoire.
LESSON & GUIDE FUNCTIONS
Supported Smart Pianist lesson functions include:
-
Correct Key
-
Any Key
-
Your Tempo
These provide different approaches to learning.
Correct Key helps guide you towards appropriate notes.
Your Tempo can adjust the pace of practice around the player.
Combined with Stream Lights, the P-S500 can provide substantially more interactive support than a conventional digital piano.
SCORE DISPLAY
Smart Pianist can display compatible musical scores.
This allows the smart device to function as a digital music display above the keyboard.
Combined with Stream Lights, you can gradually move from visual key guidance towards following conventional notation.
LYRICS DISPLAY
Compatible Songs can also display lyrics through Smart Pianist.
For players who sing while accompanying themselves, this is particularly useful.
16-TRACK MIDI RECORDING
With Smart Pianist, the P-S500 supports 16-track MIDI recording.
This lets you build much more complex arrangements than a simple one- or two-track recorder.
Individual parts can be captured separately using different sounds.
It is useful for:
-
Composition
-
Arranging
-
Songwriting
-
Performance preparation
-
Musical experimentation
Recording capacity depends on the connected smart device.
AUDIO RECORDING
The Smart Pianist workflow also provides audio recording using compatible formats including:
-
WAV
-
AAC
Recording capacity depends on the smart device.
This allows complete performances to be captured in an immediately playable audio format.
MICROPHONE INPUT
The P-S500 includes a dedicated microphone input.
This lets a singer connect directly to the piano.
For somebody who sings while playing, this can make the P-S500 the centre of a complete home-performance setup.
VOCAL HARMONY
With Smart Pianist, the P-S500 offers 44 Vocal Harmony presets.
The instrument can generate harmony backing around the incoming vocal.
For solo singers and home entertainers, this opens up a completely different side of the P-S500 beyond straightforward piano playing.
AUDIO PLAYBACK TOOLS
Smart Pianist adds useful playback functions including:
-
Time Stretch
-
Pitch Shift
-
Melody Suppressor
These can be particularly valuable for learning.
Time Stretch
Slow down or alter playback speed for practice without simply having to abandon the original recording.
Pitch Shift
Adjust the playback pitch when required.
Melody Suppressor
Reduce the prominence of the main vocal or melody in suitable music so you can practise or perform the part yourself.
PIANO ROOM
The Piano Room provides a dedicated environment focused specifically on piano playing.
Instead of navigating the P-S500’s enormous library of sounds and Styles, Piano Room lets you concentrate on the instrument as a piano.
This keeps the P-S500 approachable despite the depth hidden underneath.
DUAL / LAYER
With Smart Pianist, two Voices can be layered together.
For example:
Piano + Strings
This is useful for cinematic pieces, ballads and worship-style arrangements.
SPLIT MODE
Split allows different Voices to be assigned to different keyboard regions.
For example:
Bass in the left hand + Piano in the right
This gives the P-S500 considerably more performance flexibility.
REGISTRATION MEMORY
Smart Pianist supports Registration Memory, allowing useful combinations of settings to be stored and recalled.
For players performing multiple songs, this can save considerable setup time.
INTELLIGENT ACOUSTIC CONTROL
The P-S500 features Intelligent Acoustic Control – IAC.
At low listening volumes, the human ear naturally becomes less sensitive to bass and treble.
IAC automatically adjusts tonal balance to compensate.
That means the P-S500 can remain full and satisfying even when practising quietly.
58 REVERB TYPES
With Smart Pianist connected, the P-S500 offers 58 Reverb types.
Without the app, five Reverb types remain available.
This gives you considerable control over the acoustic environment surrounding the sound.
TWO-WAY SPEAKER SYSTEM
The P-S500 incorporates a substantial two-way stereo speaker system.
Amplification is:
(20W + 6W) x2
The speakers are:
(Oval 12cm x 6cm + 2.5cm dome) x2
That means each side combines a larger main driver with a dedicated high-frequency driver.
The system gives the P-S500 significantly greater authority than many lightweight entry-level digital pianos.
TWO HEADPHONE CONNECTIONS
The P-S500 provides two standard stereo headphone sockets.
This is especially useful for:
-
Teacher and student
-
Shared private listening
-
Duet practice
-
Quiet lessons
DEDICATED AUX OUTPUTS
The P-S500 includes dedicated:
-
L/L+R
-
R
audio outputs.
This allows proper connection to:
-
Powered speakers
-
PA systems
-
Mixers
-
Recording systems
So although the P-S500 is primarily marketed as an interactive smart piano, it also has useful performance connectivity.
AUX INPUT
A stereo mini-jack AUX IN lets you feed an external audio source into the P-S500.
USB TO HOST
The P-S500 provides USB TO HOST connectivity for integration with supported digital devices.
USB TO DEVICE
A USB TO DEVICE connection is also provided.
PEDAL CONNECTIVITY
The P-S500 includes both:
-
AUX pedal connection
-
Dedicated pedal-unit connection
This allows the setup to grow as the player develops.
OPTIONAL FURNITURE-STYLE SETUP
Yamaha offers compatible stand and pedal accessories that can turn the P-S500 from a portable digital piano into a more permanent home-piano-style installation.
This lets you start with the keyboard itself and develop the setup later if required.

The Yamaha P-S500 is particularly well suited to:

POWER REQUIREMENTS
The Yamaha P-S500 uses a Yamaha PA-500 AC adaptor.

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★
Best suited for: Beginners, returning pianists, families and home musicians who want proper 88-key weighted piano playing combined with one of Yamaha’s most interactive learning and entertainment systems.
Customers usually upgrade from: Basic portable keyboards, light-up learning keyboards and entry-level digital pianos where the player wants a wider musical environment and more interactive guidance.
Most commonly paired with: A compatible Yamaha furniture-style stand and pedal system, quality headphones, piano bench and a suitable tablet or smart device for Smart Pianist.
Our tip: Don't judge the P-S500 purely by its GHS action or piano specifications. Its real strength is the combination of 88 weighted keys + Smart Pianist + Stream Lights + Audio To Score. If conventional notation has ever been the barrier between you and actually playing more music, that combination is where the P-S500 becomes genuinely different.
Showroom feedback: The P-S500 makes particular sense for customers who want more support and entertainment than a conventional digital piano provides. It can behave like a serious weighted piano when you simply want to practise, then open into a huge arranger and learning environment when Smart Pianist is connected.

Stream Lights can show you where to play. Audio To Score can turn favourite music into material you can accompany. 660 Voices and 370 Styles open up a huge musical world. Vocal Harmony lets you sing. Sixteen-track recording lets you create.
That makes the P-S500 particularly compelling for people who want technology to help them make more music rather than simply giving them more settings to adjust.
For a complete beginner, it can make those first songs feel much more accessible.
For a returning player, it can make the route back into music much more enjoyable.
And for an experienced home musician, it provides an enormous collection of creative tools around a proper weighted Yamaha piano.
Order your Yamaha P-S500 from Fair Deal Music, or speak to our keyboard team if you'd like help comparing it with the P-225, P-525 or Yamaha's Clavinova smart-piano range.
