CURRENT-GENERATION MX49 / “MKII”

The version commonly referred to as the:

MX49 MKII

is officially listed by Yamaha UK as:

MX49 BK

within the MX BK/BU Series.

The major update over the original MX generation is its:

Class-compliant USB Audio/MIDI implementation.

This gives the newer MX much stronger integration with compatible computers and iOS devices without requiring the same driver-dependent setup as the original generation.

So while “MX49 MKII” is a useful retail description, Yamaha’s own current product designation is:

MX49 BK

for the Black version.

49-NOTE TOUCH-SENSITIVE KEYBOARD

The MX49 uses:

49 full-size keys

with:

Initial Touch sensitivity.

This means the sound responds dynamically to playing velocity.

Its compact keyboard is particularly useful for:

  • Synth playing

  • Organ

  • Pads

  • Bass

  • Leads

  • Electronic music

  • Studio programming

  • Second-keyboard rigs

The 49-note layout also helps keep the MX extremely portable.

AWM2 SOUND ENGINE

The MX49 uses Yamaha’s:

AWM2 – Advanced Wave Memory 2

tone-generation system.

This sample-based engine provides a broad collection of realistic acoustic instruments alongside synthesizer sounds and electronic textures.

The MX sound library draws heavily from Yamaha’s acclaimed:

MOTIF XS

series.

That gives the MX access to sounds originally developed for one of Yamaha’s flagship professional workstation families.

MORE THAN 1,000 MOTIF-DERIVED SOUNDS

The MX49 provides:

1,106 preset Normal Voices

plus:

61 preset Drum Kits.

The Normal Voice library covers a huge variety of instruments.

Categories include:

  • Acoustic piano

  • Electric piano

  • Organ

  • Guitar

  • Bass

  • Strings

  • Brass

  • Woodwind

  • Synth leads

  • Synth pads

  • Choir

  • Orchestral sounds

  • Percussion

  • Electronic textures

For such a compact instrument, the MX49 provides an unusually broad professional sound palette.

128-NOTE POLYPHONY

Maximum polyphony is:

128 notes.

This gives the MX49 enough capacity for:

  • Layered Performances

  • Sustained sounds

  • Piano playing

  • Arpeggios

  • Rhythm Patterns

  • Multitimbral arrangements

  • MIDI playback

without notes being unnecessarily cut off during more complex arrangements.

16-PART MULTITIMBRAL OPERATION

The MX49 can operate with:

16 internal Parts.

This means different Voices can be assigned across multiple MIDI channels for:

  • Sequencing

  • DAW arrangements

  • External MIDI playback

  • Multi-Part music production

The MX therefore works not only as a live synthesizer but also as a compact hardware sound module within a studio.

128 PERFORMANCES

The MX provides:

128 User Performances.

A Performance can combine multiple settings into a ready-to-play configuration.

This makes it useful for:

  • Splits

  • Layers

  • Song setups

  • Stage patches

  • Studio arrangements

SPLIT & LAYER

The MX49 can quickly create combinations such as:

  • Piano + strings

  • Piano + pad

  • Bass + piano

  • Electric piano + strings

  • Synth lead + pad

  • Organ + brass

This makes it useful for players who need complete live keyboard setups from a compact instrument.

999 ARPEGGIO TYPES

The MX49 provides:

999 Arpeggio types.

These can generate rhythmic and musical phrases across a wide variety of sounds.

Applications include:

  • Synth patterns

  • Guitar-style phrases

  • Bass lines

  • Rhythmic accompaniment

  • Electronic music

  • Production ideas

  • Live performance textures

208 RHYTHM PATTERNS

The MX includes:

208 Rhythm Patterns.

These provide built-in drum grooves that can be used for:

  • Practice

  • Songwriting

  • Jamming

  • Performance

  • Arranging

VCM EFFECTS

The MX includes Yamaha’s:

VCM – Virtual Circuitry Modeling

effects.

VCM models the behaviour of classic analogue processors at circuit level rather than simply approximating their frequency response.

This gives the MX access to vintage-style effects inspired by classic:

  • EQ

  • Flanger

  • Phaser

  • Wah

processing.

INSERTION EFFECTS

The MX49 provides:

48 Insertion Effect types

with:

267 presets

and up to:

4 simultaneous Insertion Effect Parts.

This allows individual sounds to retain specialised processing within a Performance.

CHORUS

The MX provides:

17 Chorus types

with:

88 presets.

These include modulation and spatial effects suitable for:

  • Electric piano

  • Synth pads

  • Strings

  • Guitars

  • Organ

  • Ensemble sounds

REVERB

The MX provides:

9 Reverb types

with:

42 presets.

These can add anything from subtle ambience to larger spatial environments.

5-BAND MASTER EQ

A:

5-band Master EQ

allows the overall output to be tailored to:

  • PA systems

  • Recording environments

  • Stage monitors

  • Headphones

  • Different rooms

FOUR ASSIGNABLE KNOBS

The MX49 provides:

4 assignable control knobs.

These allow real-time manipulation of sound parameters during performance.

Depending on the setup, the knobs can control functions including:

  • Filter

  • Resonance

  • Envelope parameters

  • Effects

  • Other assignable sound controls

PITCH BEND & MODULATION

Dedicated:

  • Pitch Bend wheel

  • Modulation wheel

provide traditional synthesizer performance control.

These are particularly useful for:

  • Synth leads

  • Brass

  • Strings

  • Guitar Voices

  • Electronic sounds

CLASS-COMPLIANT USB AUDIO & MIDI

One of the major advantages of the current MX49 generation is:

Class-compliant USB Audio/MIDI.

A compatible computer or iOS device can communicate with the MX through a single USB connection.

This allows the MX to act as both:

  • MIDI controller

  • Hardware sound source

  • USB audio interface

within a compact music-production setup.

USB AUDIO INTERFACE

The MX can transmit audio digitally through its USB connection.

This can remove the need for a separate audio interface in straightforward recording setups.

For musicians building a compact studio around a laptop or compatible device, this is a significant practical advantage.

USB MIDI

The same USB connection carries MIDI data.

The MX49 can therefore:

  • Play software instruments

  • Record MIDI into a DAW

  • Receive MIDI from software

  • Act as a hardware sound module

  • Integrate with computer-based production

DEEP DAW INTEGRATION

The MX was designed to bridge:

Hardware synthesizer + software production.

Its controller functions can be used with compatible DAWs, allowing musicians to access transport and software controls without constantly moving back to the computer.

CUBASE INTEGRATION

The MX integrates particularly closely with:

Steinberg Cubase.

Yamaha’s original MX package also includes Cubase AI download information.

Compatible Cubase workflows allow the MX to function as both:

  • Synthesizer

  • MIDI controller

  • Audio interface

for a streamlined production setup.

CUBASIS LE

The current MX generation can also unlock additional functionality within:

Cubasis LE

when used with compatible iOS devices.

This extends the MX concept into portable tablet-based music production.

FM ESSENTIAL

The current MX49 can integrate with Yamaha’s:

FM Essential

iOS synthesizer.

Connecting a compatible MX unlocks the full FM Essential sound set, including Voices inspired by classic Yamaha FM instruments such as:

  • DX100

  • TX81Z

  • V50

alongside additional FM Essential sounds.

Yamaha lists 271 high-quality Voices within the fully unlocked FM Essential environment.

USB TO DEVICE

The MX49 includes:

USB TO DEVICE.

This allows compatible USB storage devices to be connected for functions including:

  • Saving MX data

  • Loading compatible data

  • Playback of suitable WAV audio files

WAV PLAYBACK

Compatible WAV files stored on USB media can be played back directly through the MX.

This can be useful for:

  • Backing tracks

  • Practice

  • Performance

  • Reference material

AUX INPUT

The MX49 includes:

AUX IN

using a stereo mini jack.

This allows an external audio source such as:

  • Smartphone

  • Tablet

  • Music player

to be connected to the synthesizer.

MIDI IN / OUT

Traditional:

  • MIDI IN

  • MIDI OUT

connections are included.

This allows integration with:

  • External keyboards

  • Sound modules

  • Sequencers

  • MIDI controllers

  • Hardware studio equipment

LINE OUTPUTS

The MX49 provides:

  • OUTPUT L/MONO

  • OUTPUT R

using standard 6.3mm jack connections.

These can connect to:

  • PA systems

  • Mixers

  • Audio interfaces

HEADPHONE OUTPUT

A standard:

6.3mm stereo headphone output

is provided.

This allows private practice and direct monitoring.

FOOT CONTROLLER

A dedicated:

FOOT CONTROLLER

input allows compatible expression or assignable control pedals to be used.

SUSTAIN INPUT

A dedicated:

SUSTAIN

connection is provided for a compatible sustain pedal.

COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN

One of the MX49’s biggest practical advantages is its extremely low weight.

At only:

3.8kg

it is lighter than many conventional MIDI controller keyboards, despite containing:

  • Full synthesizer engine

  • More than 1,000 preset Voices

  • Effects

  • USB Audio/MIDI

  • MIDI ports

  • Display

  • Hardware controls

This makes it extremely easy to transport.

ONLY 830MM WIDE

The MX49 measures just:

830mm wide.

This makes it particularly useful for:

  • Small studios

  • Desktop production setups

  • Multi-keyboard rigs

  • Tight stage spaces

  • Musicians travelling by car or public transport

🎵 FAIR DEAL MUSIC EXPERT VERDICT ★★★★★

Best suited for: Producers, songwriters, gigging musicians and students who want a large Yamaha MOTIF-derived sound library in an exceptionally lightweight keyboard.

Likely upgrade path: Entry-level synthesizers, older portable keyboards and MIDI-controller users looking for a standalone hardware sound engine with serious DAW integration.

Useful pairings: Sustain pedal, expression pedal, Yamaha SC-MX49 soft case, compact keyboard stand and suitable headphones or powered monitors.

Our tip: The MX49’s spec sheet makes much more sense when you remember it weighs only 3.8kg. You are getting a 16-part Yamaha hardware synth, more than a thousand preset Voices, extensive arpeggios, effects and USB Audio/MIDI in something that is genuinely easy to carry with one hand.

FDM view: The MX49 remains a great little workhorse. It does not have the deep touchscreen synthesis architecture of a MODX M or MONTAGE M, and that is precisely part of its appeal. It is compact, quick to understand, full of strong MOTIF-derived sounds and very easy to integrate with a computer. For musicians who want real Yamaha hardware sounds without paying for — or carrying — a flagship workstation, it continues to make a lot of sense.
