EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2 Power Amp Distortion
Description
The EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2 Power Amp Distortion is a brutally simple one-knob distortion pedal inspired by the sound of a cranked vintage Model T-style amplifier.
Rather than using multiple gain and EQ controls, the Acapulco Gold delivers its full distortion character up front and lets you shape the response from your guitar. Roll back your instrument volume for gritty overdrive and cleaner textures, then turn it up for huge, open distortion with massive output and power-amp-style crunch.
With its straightforward operation and aggressive sound, the Acapulco Gold V2 is particularly well suited to doom, stoner rock, sludge, garage, psychedelic, alternative and heavy rock.

What Makes The EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2 Special?
The Acapulco Gold takes a deliberately different approach to distortion.
Instead of giving you separate Gain, Tone and Volume controls, EarthQuaker Devices keeps the pedal extremely simple. The large central knob controls output level, while the amount and character of the distortion are shaped using your guitar's volume, tone and pickup controls.
With the guitar turned up, the Acapulco Gold produces thick, loud and aggressive power-amp-style distortion. Back the guitar volume down slightly and it moves towards gritty overdrive, while lower settings can produce cleaner and more percussive textures.
One Big Knob
Output
The oversized control sets the pedal's overall output level.
The Acapulco Gold is capable of very high output, so it is sensible to start with the control low and increase it gradually.
The pedal's simplicity makes your guitar controls especially important:
- Turn guitar volume up for maximum distortion
- Roll guitar volume back for overdrive and cleaner sounds
- Use guitar tone controls to darken or brighten the response
- Switch pickups for different gain and attack characteristics
Cranked Model T-Inspired Character
The Acapulco Gold was designed around the character of a heavily driven vintage Model T-style amplifier.
The emphasis is on the open, powerful and aggressive response associated with pushing a loud valve amplifier hard rather than producing a tightly compressed modern distortion sound.
This makes it particularly effective for large riffs, power chords, sustained notes and players who want their distortion to feel raw and immediate.
Who Is It For?
The EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2 is ideal for players who want a straightforward, high-output distortion pedal with plenty of character.
It is particularly suited to:
- Doom
- Stoner rock
- Sludge
- Garage rock
- Psychedelic rock
- Heavy rock
- Alternative
- Noise rock
- Heavy riffing
- Power chords
- Feedback-heavy rigs
- Players who use guitar volume controls dynamically
Why Choose A One-Knob Distortion Pedal?
A simple distortion circuit puts more control back into your hands and guitar.
Rather than changing pedal settings between parts of a song, you can use your guitar volume to move between cleaner textures, overdrive and full distortion.
This also makes the Acapulco Gold quick to set up. There are no complicated EQ settings or clipping options to configure – set the output level and play.
How It Compares
Acapulco Gold V2 vs EarthQuaker Devices Special Cranker
The Special Cranker provides Level, Gain and Tone controls plus selectable Germanium and Silicon clipping, making it more flexible for low-to-medium gain sounds.
The Acapulco Gold is much more direct, focusing on huge, loud power-amp-style distortion with minimal controls.
Acapulco Gold V2 vs EarthQuaker Devices Plumes
The Plumes is a tighter, mid-focused overdrive with three clipping modes and works particularly well for boosting amplifiers.
The Acapulco Gold delivers a much heavier, more open distortion character suited to large riffs and aggressive amp-style saturation.
Acapulco Gold V2 vs Conventional Distortion Pedal
Many distortion pedals provide dedicated Gain, Tone and Level controls.
The Acapulco Gold deliberately removes most of those controls, encouraging you to shape gain and tone directly from your instrument.

FAQs
What does the EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold V2 do?
It produces high-output power-amp-style distortion inspired by the character of a cranked vintage Model T-style amplifier.
How many controls does it have?
Just one. The large central knob controls the overall output level.
How do I control the amount of distortion?
Use your guitar's volume control. Full guitar volume gives maximum distortion, while rolling it back reduces the gain.
Does it clean up with the guitar volume?
Yes. Guitar volume has a major effect on the Acapulco Gold's response and can move it from heavy distortion towards gritty overdrive and cleaner textures.
Can I adjust the tone?
The pedal does not have a dedicated Tone control. Use your guitar's tone control, pickup selector and amplifier EQ to shape the overall sound.
Is the Acapulco Gold good for doom?
Yes. Its huge output and heavy, open distortion make it particularly popular for doom, stoner rock, sludge and heavy riff-based styles.
Can it be used for lighter overdrive?
Yes. Reducing your guitar volume can produce much lighter and more controlled drive sounds.
Is the Acapulco Gold V2 true bypass?
Yes. It uses relay-based true bypass switching.
Does it require power for the bypassed signal to pass?
Yes. Because the switching is relay based, power is required for audio to pass through the pedal.
How much current does it draw?
Approximately 18mA.
What power supply does it require?
It requires a standard 9V DC centre-negative power supply.
Is a power supply included?
No. A suitable power supply is not included.
