EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang Ivory, (Used)
Description
The EVH MIJ Series EVH Signature Wolfgang in Ivory is a premium Japanese-built version of Eddie Van Halen’s signature guitar, loaded with a specification closely focused on the features he favoured for serious stage use.
Its basswood body is capped with Big Leaf maple and finished with five-ply binding, while a quartersawn maple neck, ebony compound-radius fingerboard and 22 stainless-steel frets provide the stability and precision expected from a high-end performance instrument.
Two direct-mounted EVH Wolfgang humbuckers deliver powerful but articulate tones, while the electronics include Eddie-inspired reverse pickup switching, a low-friction volume control, high-friction tone control, treble-bleed circuit and dedicated kill switch.
An EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo and D-Tuna complete the performance specification, allowing aggressive tremolo use alongside rapid switching between standard tuning and Drop D.
This Pre-Owned Ivory example is offered in Mint condition and includes its EVH Wolfgang hardcase plus EVH leather strap with eye-bolt clasp system.

Why Choose The EVH MIJ Signature Wolfgang?
Made In Japan Construction
This version of the Wolfgang is produced by EVH’s Japanese craftsmen and sits towards the premium end of the Wolfgang range.
It combines Eddie-specific design choices with high-quality hardware, stainless-steel frets and a carefully reinforced quartersawn maple neck.
Custom-Wound EVH Wolfgang Humbuckers
The bridge position uses a custom-wound Alnico II EVH Wolfgang humbucker, while the neck pickup uses an Alnico III Wolfgang humbucker.
The bridge is voiced for punch, articulation and strong sustain, while the neck position provides a creamier lead voice alongside articulate cleaner tones when the guitar volume is reduced.
Floyd Rose With EVH D-Tuna
The EVH-branded top-mounted locking tremolo is designed for aggressive dive bombs and expressive pitch effects while maintaining tuning stability.
Eddie’s patented D-Tuna allows the low E string to switch quickly between standard E and Drop D without retuning the rest of the guitar.
Dedicated Kill Switch
A lower-bout kill switch instantly mutes the guitar signal, allowing rhythmic stutter effects and abrupt note cuts without manipulating the volume control.
Compound-Radius Ebony Fingerboard
The 12"–16" compound radius becomes flatter towards the upper register.
That provides comfortable chord playing lower down the neck while giving bends and fast lead work more room higher up.
Stainless-Steel Frets
The 22 stainless-steel frets offer a smooth surface for bending and vibrato along with excellent resistance to long-term fret wear.
Eddie-Specific Control Layout
The Wolfgang has several control details that are deliberately different from a conventional twin-humbucker guitar.
The volume pot uses a low-friction EVH design, allowing exceptionally fast volume adjustments and swells. The tone pot deliberately has higher friction so it is less likely to move accidentally during aggressive playing.
The three-way pickup selector is also reverse oriented to Eddie Van Halen’s preference, another small detail that reflects the instrument’s purpose as a genuine signature design rather than simply an artist-branded body shape.
Comparison Against Popular Alternatives
MIJ Wolfgang vs EVH Wolfgang Special
The Wolfgang Special provides many of the essential EVH features at a lower price point. The MIJ Signature version moves considerably further with its maple-topped bound body, ebony fingerboard, stainless-steel frets, premium Gotoh tuners, specialised electronics and included hardcase and strap system.
MIJ Wolfgang vs Wolfgang USA
The USA Wolfgang represents the flagship American-built interpretation and sits at an even higher level of exclusivity and pricing. The Japanese model offers a highly serious Eddie-specification instrument while retaining its own MIJ identity.
Wolfgang vs Fender Stratocaster HSS
An HSS Stratocaster provides greater traditional single-coil versatility. The Wolfgang is much more focused on high-performance rock playing, with twin humbuckers, locking tremolo, D-Tuna, flatter compound radius and dedicated kill switch.
Wolfgang vs Ibanez Prestige
Both can appeal to technically demanding rock players. Ibanez Prestige models often favour slimmer necks and 24-fret layouts, while the Wolfgang combines modern performance hardware with Eddie’s distinctive neck profile, 22-fret layout and specialised controls.
Who Is It For?
EVH Fans
Few guitars get closer to Eddie Van Halen’s preferred performance features without moving into specialised tribute or USA flagship territory.
Hard Rock Players
The direct-mounted humbuckers, Floyd Rose and D-Tuna make the Wolfgang exceptionally well suited to heavy rhythm work, expressive lead guitar and aggressive tremolo techniques.
Lead Guitarists
The compound radius, stainless frets and strong upper-register access provide a precise platform for bending, tapping, legato and fast alternate-picked lines.
Drop-D Players
The D-Tuna is particularly useful for players frequently moving between standard tuning and Drop D during a set.
Professional Gigging Guitarists
Stable neck construction, locking hardware, straightforward HH electronics and the included premium transport package make this a serious working instrument.
Suitable Genres And Uses
The EVH Wolfgang is particularly well suited to hard rock, metal, classic rock, instrumental rock, progressive rock, shred, lead guitar, Drop-D riffing, high-gain rhythm playing, studio recording and live performance.
What Makes The EVH Wolfgang Different?
The Wolfgang is not simply a conventional double-humbucker guitar with a Floyd Rose added.
Its neck shape, pickup voicing, friction-specific control pots, reverse pickup switch, D-Tuna, kill switch and eye-hook strap system all reflect Eddie Van Halen’s practical preferences after decades of playing and modifying guitars.
The MIJ Signature version brings those features together with premium Japanese manufacture, making it one of the more complete Wolfgang specifications in the EVH range.
Story & Context: Eddie Van Halen And The Wolfgang
Eddie Van Halen spent much of his career modifying guitars in search of an instrument that combined the aspects he liked from different traditional designs with the stability and flexibility required for his own playing style.
The Wolfgang design emerged from that continuous experimentation and became one of the body shapes most closely associated with Eddie during the later part of his career.
When the EVH brand developed its own Wolfgang instruments, details such as the direct-mounted pickups, low-friction volume control, D-Tuna and carefully specified neck remained central to the concept.
The MIJ Series EVH Signature Wolfgang takes that philosophy further by incorporating specifications described by EVH as being based around Eddie’s preferred touring setup, alongside premium Japanese construction and a factory-supplied professional accessory package.

Why Buy Pre-Owned From Fair Deal Music?

Fair Deal Music Verdict
★★★★★ 5/5
The EVH MIJ Series Signature Wolfgang Ivory is a seriously high-spec performance guitar and much more than an EVH-themed instrument.
The quartersawn reinforced neck, ebony compound-radius board and stainless frets provide the playing platform, while the direct-mounted humbuckers, Floyd Rose, D-Tuna and kill switch give it the tools required for everything from heavy rhythm work to highly expressive lead playing.
The fact that this Mint-condition example retains its hardcase and EVH strap/clasp system makes the package particularly complete.
Best suited for: EVH enthusiasts, hard-rock players and technically demanding guitarists who want premium Japanese construction.
Customers usually upgrade from: Wolfgang Standards, Wolfgang Specials and other mid-range Floyd Rose-equipped performance guitars.
Most commonly paired with: High-gain valve amplifiers, EVH 5150 amplifiers, amp modellers, delay, phaser, flanger and wah.
Our tip: The D-Tuna works best when the Floyd Rose is configured in the intended top-mounted, dive-only arrangement. Once correctly set up, moving between standard tuning and Drop D becomes exceptionally quick.
Showroom feedback: The MIJ Wolfgang feels considerably more specialised than a typical HH performance guitar. Almost every unusual detail has a practical reason behind it, from the control-pot resistance to the eye-hook strap system.
