Why Choose The Fender American Professional Jazz Bass?

Classic Jazz Bass Flexibility

The familiar Jazz Bass control system remains one of the strongest reasons to choose this design. Separate volume controls for each pickup allow you to blend the two pickups continuously, while a master tone control keeps overall adjustment simple.

Whether you want a fuller blended bass sound, increased bridge-pickup definition or a rounder neck-pickup character, the instrument can be adjusted quickly without complicated electronics.

V-Mod III Jazz Bass Pickups

Two V-Mod III single-coil Jazz Bass pickups provide the articulation, punch and definition expected from a professional Fender Jazz Bass.

The straightforward dual-volume layout makes them particularly useful for musicians who need to adapt quickly between different songs, playing techniques and recording situations.

Slim "C" Neck With Rosewood Fingerboard

The maple neck uses Fender's Slim "C" profile, paired here with a rosewood fingerboard, rolled fingerboard edges and Narrow Tall frets.

Its 9.5" radius provides a comfortable balance between traditional Fender feel and modern playability, while the sculpted neck heel improves access when working higher up the fingerboard.

Oxblood Finish With Black Pickguard

The Oxblood finish gives this American Professional Jazz Bass a distinctive darker appearance that sets it apart from more traditional Fender colours.

Combined with the rosewood fingerboard, white dot position markers and 3-ply black pickguard, it creates a particularly cohesive, understated look.

HiMass™ Pro Bridge

The 4-saddle HiMass Pro bridge provides individual adjustment for each string and supports either string-through-body or top-load stringing.

It is a substantial professional bridge design that retains the straightforward adjustability expected from a traditional four-string Fender bass.

Comparison Against Popular Alternatives

American Professional Jazz Bass vs Fender Precision Bass

A Precision Bass focuses on the simplicity and strong fundamental character of its split-coil pickup. The Jazz Bass provides two separately controlled single-coil pickups, making it the stronger option for players who prioritise tonal blending and flexibility directly from the instrument.

Choose the Jazz Bass if versatility is important; consider a Precision Bass if you prefer maximum simplicity and a more focused traditional bass voice.

American Professional Jazz Bass vs Vintage-Style Jazz Bass

A vintage-focused Jazz Bass typically prioritises period-correct specifications. The American Professional is aimed more directly at today's working player, with features including a 9.5" radius, Narrow Tall frets, rolled fingerboard edges, sculpted neck heel and HiMass Pro bridge.

It is well suited to players who want the fundamentals of a Jazz Bass without committing to strictly vintage playability.

American Professional Jazz Bass vs Active Jazz-Style Bass

Active basses offer onboard powered EQ and additional tone-shaping controls. This Fender keeps the signal path straightforward with its traditional pickup volumes and master tone.

Choose the American Professional if you prefer simple controls and want your amplifier, pedals or recording equipment to handle more detailed EQ duties.

American Professional Jazz Bass vs Intermediate Fender Bass

Fender's more affordable bass ranges can make excellent working instruments. The American Professional is aimed at players looking for a premium USA-made instrument with upgraded pickups, hardware, refined neck detailing and a moulded hard case as part of the package.

For an experienced Jazz Bass player wanting a serious long-term instrument, it represents a logical professional-level upgrade.

Who Is It For?

This Fender American Professional Jazz Bass is a strong choice for:

  • Professional and semi-professional bassists

  • Gigging musicians needing a versatile main bass

  • Studio and session players

  • Jazz Bass owners looking for a premium upgrade

  • Players moving into their first USA-made Fender

  • Bassists who prefer passive electronics

  • Players who favour a rosewood fingerboard

  • Musicians wanting a darker, less traditional Fender finish

  • Serious home players looking for a long-term instrument

Playing Styles & Applications

The Jazz Bass format works particularly well for musicians who move between different styles and need an instrument that can adapt without complicated controls.

The American Professional Jazz Bass is well suited to rock, pop, funk, soul, R&B, blues, jazz, indie, recording, live performance and session work, with pickup blending providing useful flexibility when moving between different playing techniques and arrangements.

What Does A Rosewood Fingerboard Bring To A Jazz Bass?

For many players, rosewood is as much about playing feel and appearance as it is about specification. Its darker surface creates a strong visual contrast against the maple neck and works particularly well with the Oxblood finish and black pickguard used on this model.

The rosewood fingerboard also gives this version a distinctly different character from the maple-board alternatives in the range. Both are professional choices, so the better option ultimately comes down to your preferred feel, appearance and familiarity.

Compatibility & Recommended Essentials

The American Professional Jazz Bass uses Fender's established 34" long-scale four-string format and is supplied with Fender USA 7250M Nickel Plated Steel strings in .045-.105 gauges.

Useful additions include:

  • Quality bass amplifier or bass rig

  • 1/4" instrument cable

  • Comfortable bass strap

  • Chromatic tuner

  • Spare long-scale bass strings

  • Instrument stand

  • Strap locks if preferred

  • Bass effects pedals or external preamp for additional tone shaping

Because a Deluxe Molded Case is already included, you have suitable hard-case protection from the outset.

Story & Context

The Fender Jazz Bass first appeared in 1960, offering bassists a new alternative to the Precision Bass with an offset body design, two single-coil pickups and separate pickup volume controls.

Its adaptable pickup arrangement became one of the defining characteristics of the model, allowing musicians to move between different bass sounds using a remarkably simple control system.

The American Professional interpretation develops that established formula around the requirements of the modern working musician. Features such as rolled fingerboard edges, a sculpted heel, V-Mod III pickups and HiMass Pro bridge refine the playing experience without removing the simplicity that has made the Jazz Bass so enduring.

This Oxblood model adds a particularly distinctive aesthetic, combining the deep finish with rosewood and black appointments for a more contemporary take on the classic design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the American Professional Jazz Bass suitable for slap bass?

Yes. The Jazz Bass format is particularly popular with players who use slap, fingerstyle and pick techniques. Its dual-pickup arrangement lets you adjust the balance to find the definition and attack that works best for your technique.

How does the Jazz Bass neck compare with a Precision Bass?

Jazz Bass necks traditionally use a narrower nut width than Precision Bass necks. This model has a 1.5" nut width and Slim "C" profile, making it particularly appealing to players who favour a streamlined feel in the lower positions.

Is this a good bass for studio recording?

Yes. The ability to blend the two pickups independently makes it easy to tailor the instrument's response to different arrangements, amplifiers and recording chains without needing complicated onboard processing.

Can I use active preamp or EQ pedals with this bass?

Yes. The passive output works well with conventional bass effects, external preamps, DI boxes and pedalboard systems, making it easy to add more extensive EQ or drive when required.

Will standard long-scale bass strings fit?

Yes. This is a standard 34" long-scale four-string bass. Choose strings specifically intended for an appropriate long-scale bass installation.

Can I use heavier strings for lower tunings?

Yes, but moving significantly away from the factory string gauge can affect neck relief, intonation and nut fit. A setup may therefore be advisable when changing to substantially heavier strings or lower tunings.

Does a rosewood fingerboard need any special care?

Rosewood fingerboards can benefit from occasional cleaning and appropriate fingerboard conditioning when required. Avoid over-oiling and use products specifically suitable for unfinished rosewood fingerboards.

Is this suitable as a first professional bass?

Yes. For a player who already knows they enjoy the Jazz Bass format, the American Professional offers a strong long-term upgrade with professional hardware, refined playability and a versatile passive electronics layout.
