Description

Quick Product Summary

The Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH in Dusk takes the familiar Telecaster platform and gives it a carefully chosen set of performance-focused upgrades. Its combination of a powerful neck humbucker, Noiseless Tele bridge pickup, coil-splitting, locking tuners and modern six-saddle brass bridge makes this a particularly versatile Tele for players who want classic Fender character without being restricted to a traditional two-single-coil setup.

The Player II Modified humbucker brings extra body and output to the neck position, while the Player II Noiseless Tele bridge pickup retains the attack and bite expected from a Telecaster with considerably less unwanted single-coil noise. Pull the tone control to split the neck humbucker and you gain another useful tonal option for cleaner, more traditional Tele-style sounds.

Finished in Dusk with a rosewood fingerboard and black three-ply pickguard, this version has a contemporary appearance to match its upgraded specification. Add rolled fingerboard edges, a satin-finished Modern “C” maple neck, locking tuners, TUSQ nut and included Deluxe Gig Bag, and this is a Telecaster designed for players who expect one guitar to cover a lot of ground.

Fair Deal Quality Control Assessment

Every new electric guitar supplied by Fair Deal Music is carefully checked before leaving us.

For the Player II Modified Telecaster SH, our checks focus on overall playability, tuning stability, pickup and switching operation, push/pull coil-split function, volume and tone controls, output signal, bridge and hardware operation and the general presentation of the instrument.

As with any guitar, setup can shift slightly during delivery as timber responds naturally to changes in temperature and humidity. If you need advice on action, string gauge, pickup height or setting the guitar up around your own playing style, our experienced team is happy to help.

Why Choose The Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH?

Humbucker Power Meets Telecaster Bite

The SH configuration is the biggest reason to choose this model. The Player II Modified humbucker gives the neck position a fuller, more powerful response for lead playing, overdrive and thicker clean sounds, while the Player II Noiseless Tele bridge pickup preserves the sharper attack and definition that make a Tele bridge pickup so useful in a mix.

Coil-Split Versatility

A push/pull switch on the tone control splits the neck humbucker, expanding the available sounds without cluttering the Telecaster's famously straightforward control layout. It is particularly useful if you move regularly between fuller humbucker sounds and cleaner, more open single-coil textures.

Treble-Bleed Volume Circuit

The master volume incorporates a treble-bleed circuit designed to retain high-frequency clarity as the volume is reduced. This makes the guitar particularly useful for players who control clean-to-driven sounds directly from the instrument rather than leaving the volume control permanently at maximum.

Modern Playing Feel

The maple neck combines Fender's versatile Modern “C” profile with a 9.5" radius rosewood fingerboard, rolled edges and 22 medium-jumbo frets. The result is familiar Fender geometry with a smoother, played-in feel around the fingerboard edges and plenty of room for bends, chords and lead work.

Upgraded Hardware For Working Players

Short-post locking tuners, a TUSQ nut, modern string tree and six individual brass bridge saddles are practical upgrades rather than cosmetic extras. String changes are straightforward, individual intonation adjustment is precise and the traditional Telecaster platform becomes better suited to demanding live and studio use.

Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH vs Popular Alternatives

Fender Player II Telecaster

Choose the standard Player II Telecaster if your priority is the familiar two-single-coil Tele formula and you do not require the Modified model's locking tuners, Noiseless electronics or expanded switching. The Player II Modified SH is better suited to players who want a broader tonal range straight from the factory.

Fender Player II Modified Telecaster

The regular Player II Modified Telecaster retains a two-single-coil arrangement and adds its own expanded switching options. It is the stronger choice for someone who wants to stay closer to classic Tele pickup architecture, while the SH version offers noticeably more neck-position power from its humbucker.

Fender Player II Telecaster HH

The Player II Telecaster HH moves fully towards humbucker territory with two Player Series Alnico II humbuckers. It is better suited to players who consistently want thicker, higher-output sounds, whereas the Player II Modified SH deliberately keeps a genuine Tele-style bridge voice in the equation.

Fender American Professional II Telecaster

The American Professional II Telecaster is a substantial step up for players prioritising US manufacture, its Deep “C” neck, V-Mod II single coils, compensated three-saddle bridge and premium American Professional specification. The Player II Modified SH takes a different approach, offering a particularly flexible SH pickup arrangement and extensive performance upgrades at a more accessible level.

Who Is The Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH For?

This model is a strong choice for:

  • Gigging musicians who need several usable sounds from one guitar

  • Telecaster players who want a fuller neck pickup

  • Players who like humbuckers but do not want to lose Tele bridge attack

  • Guitarists moving up from an entry-level or intermediate electric guitar

  • Studio musicians who value contrasting pickup textures

  • Rock and alternative players wanting more gain-friendly Tele tones

  • Blues and roots players who use both clean and overdriven sounds

  • Players who value factory-fitted locking tuners and upgraded electronics

  • Guitarists who regularly control gain from the guitar's volume knob

It is particularly appealing if you love the direct feel and simplicity of a Telecaster but find a traditional SS model slightly too specialised for the range of music you play.

Suitable Genres And Uses

Rock & Alternative – the neck humbucker handles thicker overdrive and lead sounds, while the bridge pickup remains articulate and cutting.

Blues – move from fuller neck tones to expressive Tele bridge sounds without changing guitar.

Indie – excellent for dynamic clean-to-driven playing, effects-heavy textures and rhythm parts that need definition.

Country & Americana – the Noiseless Tele bridge pickup retains the attack needed for articulate picking and sharper rhythm work.

Pop & Function Work – the contrasting pickup types and coil split make it easier to cover several musical roles during the same set.

Studio Recording – multiple distinct pickup sounds make the Player II Modified SH useful when layering guitar parts without relying entirely on amplifier or pedal changes.

SH vs SS vs HH Telecaster: Which Pickup Layout Is Right For You?

An SS Telecaster is the traditional choice, with single-coil pickups at both neck and bridge. An HH Telecaster moves towards thicker, smoother and generally more powerful humbucker sounds. The SH configuration used here sits deliberately between those two approaches: a humbucker at the neck provides extra weight, while a Tele single coil at the bridge preserves the sharper response that many players consider essential to the Telecaster design.

The coil-split function makes the SH format even more adaptable. If you regularly move between clean rhythm, blues, classic rock, indie and higher-gain sounds, it offers a useful compromise between traditional Tele personality and the added muscle of a humbucker-equipped electric guitar.

Story & Context

The Telecaster has always been closely connected with practical, working-musician design. Fender's bolt-on neck construction dates back to the company's earliest solid-body electric guitars of the 1950s, creating an instrument platform that was straightforward to maintain, adjust and modify.

That culture of modification is central to the Player II Modified Series. Guitarists have spent decades changing pickups, wiring, tuners, nuts and bridges to adapt Fender instruments to their own needs, and the series takes several of those popular player-led modifications and incorporates them at the factory.

The Player II Modified Telecaster SH demonstrates that idea particularly clearly. It retains the basic Telecaster shape, scale and control philosophy while combining two different pickup types, expanded switching and modernised hardware. Rather than recreating a specific vintage Telecaster, it is designed around the way many contemporary musicians actually adapt and use the instrument.

Fair Deal Music Verdict

★★★★★ 5/5

The Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH is an excellent choice for somebody who likes the simplicity and attack of a Telecaster but wants considerably more flexibility than the traditional two-single-coil formula provides.

Its standout feature is the combination of the coil-splittable Player II Modified neck humbucker and Noiseless Tele bridge pickup. That pairing gives the guitar a convincing reason to exist alongside both conventional Telecasters and dual-humbucker alternatives.

The upgrades are practical too. Rolled fingerboard edges, locking tuners, a TUSQ nut, treble-bleed circuit and six brass saddles all address areas that players commonly modify on an existing instrument.

Best suited for: Working players who need Telecaster clarity alongside fuller humbucker sounds.

Customers usually upgrade from: Fender Standard, Squier Classic Vibe, Squier Contemporary and entry-to-mid-level Tele-style electric guitars.

Most commonly paired with: A versatile valve or modelling amplifier plus overdrive, boost, delay and modulation effects.

Our tip: Use the neck humbucker at full output for thicker lead or driven sounds, then split it when you need additional definition or a cleaner rhythm texture.

Showroom feedback: The SH pickup arrangement makes this one of the more adaptable Telecasters for players whose set list moves between clean, edge-of-breakup and higher-gain sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Fender Player II Modified Telecaster SH good for high-gain guitar sounds?

Yes. The neck humbucker gives you a thicker, more powerful starting point for driven lead and rhythm sounds, while the Noiseless bridge pickup keeps the sharper Tele character available when you need more attack and definition. For players focused exclusively on heavy tones, an HH guitar may still be preferable.

What does splitting the neck humbucker actually change?

The push/pull control changes the neck pickup from its full humbucker operation to a single-coil-style voice. The split setting is useful when you want a lighter, more open response rather than the fuller output of the complete humbucker.

Why is a treble-bleed circuit useful?

On many passive guitars, reducing the volume control also reduces some high-frequency content. The treble-bleed circuit helps preserve clarity as you turn down, which is especially useful if you use the guitar's volume control to move between driven and cleaner sounds.

Are locking tuners only useful for players who change strings frequently?

No. Faster string changes are one benefit, but locking tuners also provide a simple, secure method of attaching the string with minimal winding around the post. That makes them a useful practical feature for gigging and recording players as well as anyone who changes strings regularly.

Is the Player II Modified Telecaster SH suitable for pedalboards?

Very much so. The contrasting neck and bridge pickups give pedals different tonal material to work with, making the guitar well suited to overdrive, fuzz, compression, modulation, delay and ambient effects.

Is the 9.5-inch fingerboard radius suitable for lead playing?

Yes. Fender's 9.5" radius is a versatile modern specification that remains comfortable for chord work while providing a practical surface for string bending and lead playing. The medium-jumbo frets further contribute to its contemporary feel.

Would this make a good main gigging guitar?

Yes. The broad pickup range, straightforward controls, locking tuners, individual bridge saddles and included Deluxe Gig Bag make it particularly well suited to musicians who need one adaptable instrument for rehearsals, recording and live performance.

How should I choose between this and a traditional Telecaster?

Choose a traditional SS Telecaster if the classic two-single-coil sound is your priority. Choose the Player II Modified Telecaster SH if you regularly want a thicker neck sound, greater gain capability and additional switching versatility while retaining Tele-style bridge character.
